Devin Davis cited for marijuana possession

Recommended Posts

No. He's supposed to oversee the program. Repeat offenders should NOT be on the team. Define the rules. Violate them once, face the discipline. Violate them twice, say bye-bye. Make an example out of one or two of the violators - might make the others think twice about behaving stupidly.

This is a bigger issue because it's the SAME team. The kids who keep getting involved have previously been guilty of such behavior. Crean needs to put some teeth into the disciple, or just let the players run amok.

IMO, this is extremely close to a "lack of institutional control" situation.

The crazy thing is that if this were a fraternity (just bare with me here) the whole entire fraternity would be kicked off campus due to the strikes against one or a select few. Imagine if the whole team was punished for the wrongdoing of one person much like a fraternity is. Not saying it's the right thing to do but still interesting to think about

I just wish these guys knew the minute you signed that letter of intent you consented to not living the normal "college lifestyle". You are under a microscope. There are just some things you don't get to have the luxury of experiencing. I played small time college football and I was scared to death of getting caught doing anything that would get me in trouble so I avoided it. This eve goes to something as small as skipping one class......I can't even imagine how paranoid I would have been if I was playing big time D1 haha.

You cared and these guys don't. That is what it comes down to.

you wouldn't have had to be scared because people would have been kissing the ground you walk on since you were 10 years old. People would have consistently made exceptions for you. Our society regarding athletes is pretty sad really. NFL crowds show this on a regular basis.

Say it isn't so! So disappointing given what DD has been through. BUT---rules are rules and when you violate them you have to face the music. I am sure after the last episode of violations Crean and the University laid down the law concerning future violations and the consequences for violations.  Whatever that was should be strictly followed now---regardless of WHO the player is--- because that's the only way to run a top program.  Players are given so much and owe it to the university to do their part by behaving themselves.  My old school rant is now over.

Send DD packing and give Hanner a VERY stiff suspension. This will let other players know that even if you are in the same room with this stuff going on you are a part of the problem. If Hanner knew DD was smoking up then I wonder how many other players knew it was going on as well???

This makes me question our teams (on court) leadership. Yogi? Nick Z? Colin? Thomas B? Somebody step up and get your teammates in check. You want to make a run at a National Championship or make a run to the 7-11 for munchies. If you're not a part of the solution then you are a part of the problem.

See you in October.

Nobody was smoking, he was cited for possession. Nobody was even arrested. I'm sorry but I fail to see Hanner's guilt in any of this.

This is blown way out of proportion. It's the offseason. Marijuana has healing properties, and he's still recovering from a head trauma. Yeah you have to know the rules and he's clearly going to pay the price via suspension, but let's not crucify this kid. Geez.

We don't even know the details..who was smoking? Who was holding? Who else was there?

Just relax...

EDIT: I actually don't really care about the details. It was a little pot in the offseason. He wasn't shooting crystal meth or anything. Whatever... I know this is an unpopular opinion so I'll see myself out.

I am not talking about what happened legally. The kid had it in his possession. Do you honestly think he was not going to or had not already smoked it? You can play the guilty until proven innocent theory, but I believe this whole team lost that right with our 1st 4 or 5 rules infractions. It is fairly simple Millions of humans do it every day, just DO NOT break the law.

Not saying it makes the situation any better considering the morale behind if, but why in the world could they not have gone outside or in someone's car? A dorm room, seriously? It's the dumbest thing you can do as a resident of a dorm.

If you get caught smoking in the drivers seat of a car you could get a DUI even if you're parked.  Personally think the dorm is not the dumbest option and actually is probably one of the least likely places to get caught with proper precaution.

I'm just reiterating the same point other posters have been making: you have to make smart decisions as a member of the Indiana Basketball team. That means not lighting up in a dorm room, but somewhere you don't get caught. I don't want to get into conspiracy theories but I'm sure players are made aware when they're going to be drug tested so they can wisely play around them. So I'm not going to knock Devin for being in possession of weed, but I will knock him for putting himself in a position where he could get caught.

Agree completely. Marijuana is nearly legalized and Indiana is close, laws in Indiana concerning pot have loosened up significantly. In fact, I believe that it isnt even a felony anymore until you have 50 grams - nearly an ounce and a half.

Yeah it was really dumb to have it/smoke it in the dorm, but he's a college student. You guys can say he's not a regular college student bc he represents the university all you want, that doesn't change anything. If you ever smoked, even once, you have no right to call for Devin's head for this.

I'm completely astonished that some of you would go from supporting Devin after everything that happened, to wanting him kicked off JUST for pot. and Its the summer, like windycity said, not even in season.

Prohibition of marijuana is as ludicris as alcohol prohibition was. Its only illegal bc corporations would lose money from its legalization, so they lobby for its prohibition. It isn't harmful, and with a motor like Devin's I doubt you'd have to worry about pot making him lazy.

Give him a suspension to satisfy the NCAA and move on. Its not a big deal, not like Crean's paying the kids like Cal or giving them a fraudulent education like UNC.

I smoked...but I wasn't on a taxpayer funded scholarship to play ball at.... I- FN- U.........its not the fact he smoked, I'm mad he smoked and could careless about getting caught...I prolly would be there with him...but he has rules he is suppose to follow and he didn't even hide it...if he was caught in some obscure place, fine...but he didn't even care...thats the problem I have....but smoke away in June and July...take a trip to the quarry or something.... :D

Yeah, there's no problem. Possession of pot with the smell wafting from the dorm room window (according to the report), is no big deal.

Medicinal? Does Indiana have a medical marijuana law? I don't believe so. If they do, does DD have a "card"? If so, isn't it STILL a violation of university policy?

DD's thumbing his nose at the laws, rules and expectations and he is just a selfish little clot of humanity that wants to do what he wants to do, the basketball program be damned.

Like I said... he should know the rules. He should know where he stands within the program and that he represents the University.

My message is to everyone ripping this kid apart for nothing. I don't think it's wrong to smoke some pot over the summer as a college student, but it is against the rules and law. Devin will pay for that citation (literally) and he will be punished from his team. Done deal. Live and learn. He made a mistake. Leave the kid alone.
