Yogi Leaning towards leaving per multiple sources

Recommended Posts

The offseason has become a three ring circus. Who is coming, who is going, who gets Creaned, when will the next assistant/S&C coach be hired, who will get hired, will Crean go big with his lineups, will he ever teach defense, will he ever beat a 2-3 zone, etc.

I'll be happy when EVERYONE buys into THE PROGRAM again. I watched Kahwi Leonard drill a trey in Matt Barnes' face in the fourth quarter of game two. I was expecting him to talk smack or flex. Nope, he turned around and sprinted back on defense. I became even a bigger fan of his with a ton more respect for his game.

If Yogi leaves, I'm afraid Jimmy will follow. Just a hunch.

I completely disagree. I seem to think that JBJ will dart if Yogi leaves. No sources, just what I'm feeling from watching this past season. Both seem to have a "little bit" of selfish to them. Hard to make that work in your starting backcourt. Again, just my opinion!

I said that all wrong, meant to say JBJ WILL STAY if Yogi leaves. Wow, I really messed up my own argument! Pretty bad

Lol I was wondering if that's what you meant, but it's whatever. It's a fair argument. I could see James wanting to be "the guy" if Yogi leaves. But I could also see him saying "if Yogi can get drafted, why not me?"

Edit: Moot point now! Hooray

Relative to Yogi's future, I don't think it matters if he stays or if he goes; imo, he's just not an NBA caliber PG.

Crucify me if you will, but he isn't big enough, to on a nightly basis, over an 80 game schedule, go up against 6'7' guards.

Perhaps the absence of defense in the NBA will allow him to get his shot off, but I doubt it. More likely, he'll get a lot those shots blocked, a lot of his drives to the basket, unceremoniously thwarted, and a lot of his speed worn off by the midway point to any season. If he goes, I wish him all the best, and hope he proves me wrong.

Six months ago everyone agreed him.  Bryant was considered a lock for the Orange.  A lot changed with that program in the last six months.

Alber's posted on the Scout board like 6 month ago that The Bryant Ship had sailed and we had NO CHANCE of landing him .

Actually Chuck and Crean were surprised when Bryant didn't commit on his official. The thread on Scout I was referring to showed that Albers was just parroting what others were saying on different boards. NO INSIGHT . He and Hutch both claim that they heard Crean was the lead recruiter on Thomas. If you watch the Derby video you will hear from Thomas himself who was the key recruiter. Pap told everyone on this board that James was still undecided and yet Albers didn't have a clue until Crean actually mentioned the possibility yesterday. I digress, I feel by Saturday night we will have more good news from yogi. [ Despite the mystical ramblings of the Insider Albers.

I definitely think Yogi has as good as shot at the NBA as anyone. He has great range on his shot. A part from his freshman year we haven't been able to see Yogi play where he hasnt had to have been the hero. He has carried the team on his back for 2 straight years without much help. If you look at Isaiah Thomas of the Boston Celtics, Yogi could easily fit that mold. A lot of players with similar talents to Yogi are getting good minutes on NBA teams. Yogi also plays great defense. Everyone forgets that he completely shut down Stauskas from Michigan a season ago. Yogi only seems to get worn down because he has had to do everything for this team the last two years.

Seeing that JBJ discussed more the special things they can do next year over the growth he needs to make before jumping to the NBA, my bet remains that Yogi will be back.

Not saying your wrong. But why couldn't his draft stock rise in his senior season like Shabazz Napiers did? Come back, and help lead your team to a very successful season. I mean it's not too far fetched, right?

My thought.... Yogi and fam want to build hype for his decision as much as possible so that it can be that much more exciting when he decides to come back.

Positives to staying - chance to make a serious run at another B1G title, and quite possibly a FF or beyond. One more year playing with some of his best friends. Chance to play with Thomas Bryant and maybe even Thon Maker. Cement IU legacy even further. Moving his name up in the record books. Really can't hurt his draft stock at all, since it's not that high at the moment. A big year and a strong team performance can only help. And if he can get to the late first round he will have that ever-important guaranteed contract.

Positives to leaving - get paid next year instead of playing for free. Might think that 2nd round is as good as it's going to get. Would rather try and build an overseas and/or NBDL resume before making a serious run at the league.

There's a difference between what we perceive he SHOULD do and what he actually will do. But weighing the two options, I feel like the right decision to spend his final year in Bloomington. Will he do that? I don't know for sure. But if I had to pick one or the other I would still go with *staying*.

The only for sure here is that we will all be able to breathe much easier in a few short days.

If Yogi stays, what happens to Yogi if IU finishes 4th or so in the Big Ten, and makes it to only the round of 32? Does this hurt his 2016 draft status since he will be surrounded by a very talented team and he is the team leader? Yogi and his family are in a tough situation and will have to weigh the options. Since there are and have been several 6 foot guards in the NBA, I can see him making the jump if a team has expressed a sincere interest. I feel he will excel in the NBA workouts if he decides to enter this year. He does need to learn to distribute the ball better.

If we finish worse than 4th, I think most of the blame would go to Crean. Getting the core back from this years squad plus a legit big. Which is what was the desperate need, as we all know from this years squad. Barring a significant injury, he can't hurt his draft status anymore.

I agree Crean will shoulder much of the blame, but Yogi's ability to lead a talented team would have to be questioned as well. I think he can hurt his draft status a lot if he fails to lead the 2015/16 team in accordance to the talent he is surrounded by. Some pundits have him sitting in the 40 and up position in their mock drafts.
