I want Tom Crean to stay

Recommended Posts

I admire your positive outlook but there are a few patterns that have developed over the Crean years that have to be concerning for you. Namely the late season collapses and the turnover of players.

I hate losing as much as the next guy. No doubt we could use some senior leadership to get us back to being #1 in the nation like we were a few years back.

I think the NBA lottery picks have hurt more than anything. 3 in 2 years and any of those guys could of come back another year. Hard to fault Crean for sending guys to the show but it left the cupboard bare.

Crean had to know that both Cody and Vonleh were not going to stay 4 years. Armed with that information, it was incumbent upon him to address that (strong) possibility in his recruiting.

One cannot fault Cody, Vonleh and Vic for going when they did. Not being prepared with recruitment is a problem that Crean seemed to ignore. THAT is on him.

So you prefer the oversign? I thought that was a big gripe everyone pointed to with Crean.

I think Crean is a great guy and I would absolutely love to have a beer with the man and talk basketball but sorry, he just hasn't shown me anything to believe he's the right guy to take us where we want to go. He had a great team, full of talent and couldn't get out of the S16. His in game coaching, lack of adjustments, insane substitution patterns and failure to focus on defense are too much to tolerate anymore. That combined with the end of year cleanings are starting to make our program look bad. IU deserves better.

He deserves to go out to a standing-o for what he did for our program but enough is enough. Its time for a change

It's a gripe, but there are other big ones.  Let's see:

His offense looks good when they can run, but struggles when forced to play half court.  Why?  It's weave and street ball with very little movement.

His teams regularly limp down the stretch because he wears them out.

Undisciplined

He can't build on or sustain any success.

He's one of the weakest in game coaches in the conference.

Oversigning every year.

Oh, and Purdue fans want us to keep him forever; that alone means he's not the man for the job.

And to top it off, the complaints we have are the same ones Marquette fans had about him which means he hasn't improved as a coach.

EDIT:  I've also heard "he's not a nice guy" and "he's an ***hole" on a couple of occasions.

Absolutely not. But at the same time, as a coach, you must anticipate what will happen with your team and your players. You know that Cody is leaving after a year or two, recruit a replacement. Same with Vonleh. Crean, however, seems to be enamored with these 6-7, 6-8 wing type players.

This is actually a great point that everyone seems to dismiss. The oversign that becomes necessary due to early draft entree. Definitely hasn't been the main cause of the oversign, but it's created a risk that has to be accounted for.

He did recruit a replacement, a clone even, in Luke Fischer.

I don't think Crean is the right coach, but I also agree that he's been the victim of more than a few strokes of bad luck.

Thats quite a juggle to not oversign but be prepared for guys to possibly leave early for the NBA.

Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose.

Would you prefer the IU had another PG signed this year in case Yogi goes pro?

Tom Crean is a lot of things but undisciplined is not one of them.

you don't need 13 players if you have a strong 8-9 guys that can play. The guys at the end if his bench are not basketball players anyway

If they are on the team, they are basketball players.

Are you advocating to leave scholarships unfilled instead of oversigning?

That would be an interesting approach.

My question is How close have you followed this regime for the past 7 years? I have followed very closely and made these predictions and claims far in advance of what is happening. I have talked to inside sources about Crean's demeanor and likeability.

Do I think we can be good next year with Bryant and key returnees? Hell yes!

Do I want an every 3 year program ? Hell no!

Recruiting has dropped off a cliff, so that every 3 year trend may not even return.

So much I could go into, but yes we could be really good next year with the right pieces IN SPITE of Crean. Scary thought!!!
