Tom Crean to Alabama Rumor Thread

Recommended Posts

I don't think the size of the buyout makes any difference whatsoever.  With the amount of unrest among the fans and the mediocre past 2 seasons if CTC were going elsewhere other than by his choice I think that announcement would have already been made.  Why allow players to leave the program that might otherwise stay if CTC were gone?  He's reportedly been working the recruitment trail and you don't let him keep recruiting kids if you're Fred Glass and you know he's gone.  And while some might say his staying or going hinges on Bryant's announcement (whenever that is)  I can't buy into that argument either.  Bryant is not LeBron James or Tim Duncan.  He can possibly make a huge positive impact next season but I just don't think Glass is the kind of guy who would make a decision about the head coaching position based upon the decision of a single recruit.  And today I'm still old but I'm not cranky because I've had my afternoon nap!

There is nothing, I repeat, NOTHING, that a kid like Bryant could do next year to rectify a team so completely devoid of defense. Lew Alcindor at 18 couldn't fix this ship. This is a systematic issue, not a talent or athletic issue, and it's just too bad that we likely have to go through yet another year of false hopes, and wasted time, waiting for Fred Glass to learn what everybody else already knows.

I need a nap.

Yes, but what changed between this year and last? The only change I saw was JBJ not playing defense and a missing big man. We weren't a good defense last year, but we certainly weren't as bad as we were this year.

I think Bryant could have a bigger impact than you're expecting. Also, I expect the team to take more pride in building their defensive ability and focus during the offseason after getting embarrassed all season.

I wish I had your faith or your flask and you had my eyesight. lol

JBJ was the worst of the lot, but hardly the only offensive defender, (now there's a paradox!).

Yogi, with all his speed and quickness, was caught countless times napping on defense. "Help" defense, which as the name implies, depends on others helping out, was nowhere to be seen. Ultimately, in order for us to win another championship, we have to play lights out on defense, and I have strong doubts that this coach has it in him, or has the ability to transfer it his players.

He actually is.

Dan Hurley is Bobby Hurley's younger brother, and he's the coach of the University of Rhode Island.

Well, lookie there, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while. :)

Per KenPom's defensive rating for 2014, we were 47th. We returned that same group, with the same coach, and same system, and ended up ranked 218th.

What changed? That's all I'm asking. As pointed out by JS earlier, Crean has never had a good defensive rating, but this is his absolute worst and a major outlier.

I really think the missing big man had the largest impact. That's why I believe Thomas Bryant will make a significant difference.

Actually we were probably missing one key piece from last year. I thought about not giving a name bc I'm sure you all know who I'm talking about anyways, but I'll go ahead and say Jeremy Hollowell was the guy that single handedly held last years defense together and that is why it was so bad this year. I think that's pretty obvious.

I agree. His defense and hand-clapping led this team last year.

his COMPETITIVENESS may be his biggest asset to our team if we get him. Him and Yogi really, really want to win.

Apparently nobody else does. At least not enough to work at it.

I like all three of those players. Holt is undersized, but has Bball IQ that impressed me as a freshman. Z had some moxy and was fearless. We need that leadership going forward. Hartman was the biggest surprise for me. His sophomore year earned him some playing time next year.
