#IHSAA Boys/Girls State Tournament

Recommended Posts

Brandon Newman's Valparaiso team gets upset by Chesterton 35-30 in the sectional final.  Newman held to 8 points and Valpo lead only once, midway in the second quarter.

I can not stress enough how much Valpo underachieved this year.  Newman is really, really good and has decent talent around him.  The job the coach did in putting a cohesive plan together was not there.  He seemed intent on putting a game plan out on just having Newman in iso.

You are very correct. Shows how much I paid attention today. I went yesterday. Not today. Was at the game earlier...

I watched the news in my drunken stupor. I knew they won and for whatever reason they showed last year’s ending. Walk of shame for my hometown .

Kind of a fun fact from John Harrell:  So far in this tournament, games are averaging 105.7 points.  If it stays there, it will be the lowest PPG since 1952's 96.4.  BTW, in 1953 the average jumped to 107.0.  I think it was the jump shot that did that.

He has a summary of tournament scoring at:  http://pastbb.homestead.com/files/tnyscoring.htm#loaded

My buddy teaches at HN.  He said it's the best ball he has seen them play in years.  They will have an extremely tough Regional.  Hopefully they have some magic left.  Would love to see them make it out.

Meh, Huntington North historically has been bad.

Yep. That’s the problem when the programs around you are either Fort Wayne programs, Warsaw, and Marion. We have had some decent teams. Mainly when I was in high school. But our girls team has always been superior to the boys.

That might be, but Huntington North is a county school.  They take in the entire county.  They are a huge school, but seem to lack on producing talent.  Not cutting on them because I lived in Warren for 15 years.  So I witnessed it first hand.

It would have been better if they did Huntington South like they planned originally. But a lot of Warren kids go to Southern Wells as you know. Roanoke kids sometimes go to Homestead or Canterbury. Crazy thing is how few of kids go there now than before. I graduated there close to 20 years ago and we had 419 kids in my class. Had 420 but one person quit last day of school. Now they struggle to get more than 200-250.

I've got you by what, 2-3 yrs?  We started at 500+ class. Ended in mid-400s.

I remember when the girls team won state. Lisa Winters was the pride and joy of the team if recall. What was that 92ish maybe?

You left out Markle kids going to Norwell.

But in my lifetime HN has pretty much been blah.  They have have a few good teams.  The Paul and Reeder years.  Sean Kline(who I coached at the Y when he was little).  Chris Kramer.  But they just are never consistent.

But you never know, this very well could be their year.

If anyone wants to watch a small town kid that could end up being pretty good, watch the Paoli vs Linton Stockton game. Paoli lost to them in the first game of the season. Regionals are at Paoli as well. Should be one hell of a regional.

Who’s the player to watch in this game?
