What would you do?

I think its an easy decision to go play.
I never was recruited in any sports or anything but its kind of like applying for college. I applied to three schools when I graduated from high school. I applied to IU, Butler, and Ball St. I've been an IU fan since I was born and dreamed of going to school there. I was accepted at all three but Butler offered me a small academic scholarship and Ball St a full ride academic scholarship. So I could go to IU and pay full tuition or go to Ball St for free. I ended up choosing Ball St because of the scholarship.
Like others have said, it depends on the person. We've had walk ons at IU that were offered scholarships at other schools but would rather sit the bench as a walk-on at IU. Then there are other kids that would rather play and end up transferring out for that opportunity. I don't necessarily think that riding the bench at IU for 4 years gets you any advantage or someone who played 4 years at a mid major or smaller school.

I've thought about this for a while and I'm curious as to what others would do. This is an individual's choice, so there are no right or wrong answers.

For this scenario please have no IU bias. Would you rather go to a small D1 school and play or come to IU under CTC and sit the bench?

I'm going to the smaller school and play.

In order to NOT have an IU bias, it most always has to be play at a smaller college.

With IU Bias i'd play at IU every chance I got.

It is almost a toss up between playing or going to IU for me but playing would win out. When I compare sitting for CTC or any other coach anywhere else besides Indiana and playing, it is a no brainer. Playing all the way.

I say play but I didn't choose to play when I had the chance. I had offers in basketball, cross country and football and I choose IU. I loved my time at IU and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I often wonder what it would have been like to play though. I still miss playing in front of a crowd.

I would choose to play, but would always be an  IU fan.  Another wrinkle in the decision, what if choice was IU but the scholarship was not necessarily guaranteed past the first year and you likely would not see any or very limited action, or a lower level DI school or DII program where you would be be in the rotation early if not a starter and essentially locked into a scholarship for four years to earn a degree.

The best answer is it is different for each individual.  Coming to IU and then transferring works for some (Abel) and not so much for others (Etherington).  Walking on at IU and turning down lower level offers worked out for Kyle Taber.  Walking away form a lower level scholarship after two years to walk on at IU may work out for Burton.

Completely removing my IU bias?  I'll try........... One would have to assume that 18 year old me, good enough to get an offer from IU, is going to be the kind of kid that gets told how great I am every day of the week. I probably have an inflated sense of self at this point and believe that I belong at IU over any inferior mid major. I also have no reason to believe I'm going to sit the bench, as CTC has really convinced me that I fill a very specific need in the frontcourt and has promised me a fair shot.

as an IU fan, I definitely would choose to sit the bench and take in the glorious atmosphere of IU basketball..

as a basketballer...sitting on the bench would get real old, real fast sometime in Mid-December...

if you are good enough to make the squad...you are pretty damn good, AND you have put in some hard work to get where you are at and will want to play competitively and that ultimately means you are going to be dissatisfied riding the pine...

Look at Z-man. he is in one of the top graduate business schools in the US here at IU. he could have continued to play elsewhere, but he said, he always wanted to play at IU.

that's a good point...Zman, though; has his degree from Southern Illinois?

what about the IU freshman that has a scholarship, rides the bench, and has to worry about next year...

he knows he has a guaranteed scholly at a D2 or mid...

but will he as a Sophomore at IU?

a new can of worms, me thinks...

Play at IU, focus on improving and working hard, keeping my teammates out of trouble and getting them to work hard too. Bust my backside to get those few minutes in blowouts and enjoying ALL the benefits of wearing the candy stripes.

We could have used you on the team this summer.Have any eligibility left?

Almost a Rudy scenario really...

Imagine Bennie Seltzer telling you: You're 5 foot nothing, a hundred and nothing, and you have barely a speck of athletic ability. You hung in there with the best college basketball players in the land for 4 years and you're going to walk out of here with a degree from Indiana University. In this life you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody but yourself! And after what you've gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't never going to happen!
