Creans stats at Marquette.

Recommended Posts

This is in no way, a bash Tom Crean thread. I just wanted u all to see how his good Marquette teams compare with us. Pay attention to the Rebounding, Turnovers, and Shooting %. In some ways Crean has improved here with obviously better talent. But it seems that he has been pretty consistent with his teams at Marquette.

AKA, his teams always turn the ball over. Except this year may be his best in that category. He also has had much better shooting teams at IU. Thanks for posting this, very interesting.

The paradigm for hiring where I used to work was, "Past performance is the best predictor of future success."  I think Coach Crean's body of work is large enough that we should have a pretty good idea of what we will get.  If that doesn't meet expectations, then it is probably time to find someone else.  If it does, then carry on!

He did a great job rebuilding from a messy situation. Quite honestly, he should have never been hired in the 1st place. But then again, we have no idea who was really interested. Maybe, just him.

I was under the impression that we reached out to Tony Bennett and he said no. I'm not sure about Sean miller. I do know that they were both hired at their schools around the same time Crean was. It may have been a blessing in disguise if we can land a better coach than miller/Bennett here in the next year!

there were many interested but not a lot of the top top tier guys at the time.

I will say this. I don't think we botched the hiring. We needed a squeaky clean guy that was young enough to see a future after the clean up and guy that had energy to reinvigorate the team, recruits and fanbase. He had all those things and did all of those things. I don't know that winning national championships or the ability to was priority number one at the time.

Izzo supposedly was interested according to Dakich and Kravitz. Did your friend ever mention him? I do not doubt that Izzo told Kravitz he was interested but always wondered how deep the interest was

yeah, it's hard to say for sure how interested each coach was looking back. Izzo would have been the home run we needed. I would have to believe that at least one of his final four runs would have been a national championship at IU. A lot of what I knew at the time is/was captured in PM conversations on the old Scout board. I don't recall hearing his name as one of the guys they narrowed it down to

It was a somewhat similar situation to what Crean finds himself in at IU. A good portion of the Marquette faithful were ready for him to leave. He saw an opportunity. Even I thought he was the right guy at the time. I honestly had visions of Izzo 2.0. Hindsight says probably shoulda paid more attention to the fact that no tears were shed when he left Marquette. Gotta couple buddies tied to that program and they were pleased to see him go. Not that they have been much better off without him.

Hindsight is always 20-20. Had we won a championship w/Zeller+Oladipo+Company we'd be singing Crean's praises.

The fact of the matter is that we didn't. But looking back at the state of the program as it was when he entered, he was the perfect candidate. He was the perfect coach to lift us from the proverbial ashes. He has charisma. Let's face it. Who didn't tear up, or at least get chills (hell, I still get chills), when watching the "It's Indiana..." speech. He has however, hit his ceiling. I said this last year too. I'm not looking to lynch the guy, but I'm just ready for him/IU to mutually part ways.

If Izzo was interested and not followed up, this set us back another decade. How could you not give him the first opportunity? Thinking of all those Indiana players who have left to play for him plus his keeping the others in state. The 2012 class would have really been the movement. What could have been...

Couldnt agree more. I hope for a nice easy transition. Some reason I get the feeling he is not gonna go away easily. Again, hope I'm wrong.

I'm not sure why I keep using Michigan Football as a reference. Maybe it's bc I see so many parallels between us both. Tom Crean is our Rich Rodriguez. Good but not good enough. I've been told that Mark Few was a top choice but that he declined interest due to the pressures of our fans. That's just something I've heard. I also remember Lon Kruger and Jay Wright being mentioned as possible replacements. When Tom Crean was announced I was surprised. I didnt hear his name a lot. I remember immediately researching his stats at Marquette and viewing Marquette fan sites. I felt sick afterwards. The stats and records never stood out as someone deserving of this job. The worst part was that the Marquette fans seemed relieved that he was gone and were eagerly looking forward to finding out who the next coach would be. If you go back and look at the Marquette fans criticisms of Crean, you'll find that they are IDENTICAL criticisms that IU fans have.  Man I really wish that Glass would have held off on the extension.

As far as recruiting goes: NOBODY outside of Calipari has been better than Miller at Arizona. That dude flat out gets it done in recruiting. I think he will win big eventually too. Bennett is also grossly outperforming Crean as of late. Looks like he's on his way to back to back 1 seeds in the tournament. Thats impressive. Only a matter of time before he starts luring that Virginia talent to stay home.

Ditto. The extension infuriates me more than anything. (Is this Hoosier Trav from ITH?)

Yes. I was punished by ITH for apparently attacking some other posters. I dont recall it being that way. I was upset after the Eastern Washington loss and bashed Crean. Then a flood of posters started attacking my character, I obliged, and POOF! I ended up on, what I feel is a far superior IU basketball site. I did learn to mince my words from that whole exchange though. I wish I would have found this site MUCH EARLIER. ITH does a great job but I hate feeling like a pariah every time i feel like voicing an opinion that doesn't line up with theirs. That and the surplus of ass kissing that goes on between the fans and the sites founder was nauseating to me. ANywho....... I really do love this site. I've been passing it along to many of my friends.
