Next year's back court...

Recommended Posts

What's the likelihood of one/some/all of these scenarios happening?

1. After graduating, Yogi either transfers for a grad year, or tries his shot at the league?

2. Leading all freshman in scoring, Jimmy buckets goes pro after 1? (By the way, his D wasn't terrible tonight.)

3. Stan transfers?

Being over signed by 2, the schollies are gonna come from somewhere.

After a great back court this year, do we find ourselves back in the boat we were in last year next year with a couple guards and a ton of wings? Hope not...

I think Yogi will stay. His mom seems a true Hoosier. He won't be drafted, not an option.

Blackmon will have slightly higher draft odds but likely not high enough. I think he comes back and goes the Gary Harris route. Unless he just straight goes off in the B1G.

Based on tonight's rumors Stan is gone sooner or later. Can't believe I'm saying this but if the other guys return, it won't matter at all.

Going beyond the backcourt, I would love to see a lineup of the below next year (with a caveat that a lot can change between now and then).

Yogi

JBJ

RoJo

Holt

Big recruit/Hanner (depending on who the recruit is and who would win the job)

Bench Rotation:

Nick Z

Hartman

Big recruit/Hanner

Devin Davis (assuming he's back and able to play)

Max

Morgan

I think we'd be doing Holt a disservice by forcing him to play the 5. I really think he's a talented kid who could become an essential part of the program for the next 4 years, but we need to let him grow and expand his game. Not saying he'd be as talented, but I think he can be a Draymond Green/Harrell type of player.

Is it even a sure thing that DD is going to ever play again? I wish the kid the best, but it sounds like he has more to overcome than simply rehabing a knee injury.

He's running and exercising and there haven't been any reports of cognitive issues. So, it's not a sure thing but it's more likely than not.

I do agree with everything here but its a longshot to just dream that a "big recruit" for next year is suddenly going to pop up. Right now we are only recruiting Thomas Bryant for next year. There aren't a whole lot of "big recruits" for next year that aren't signed somewhere else already. If only landing a "big recruit" was as easy as some people make it sound on this board

That's why I wrote "/Hanner" and put the spot in both the starting lineup and bench. IMO, a guy like Thomas Bryant has a chance to start, but if we don't get him and end up with some 5th year transfer or a guy that committed elsewhere and they decommit because of a coaching change then I'd expect Hanner to still start.

Nobody said it was easy, but it's Crean's job and he has a ton of resources at his disposal. We can't have two years in a row where our interior is swiss cheese. Also, the real point of my post is that I'm high on Holt and feel that Crean should go bigger and play him at the 4 not the 5.

Possibly Thon?   too early to tell though.  Once he reclassifies, it's going to be nuts with coaches and teams all over him.   Glad IU was the first and ONLY to also offer his brother Matur (6-10" , 200lbs , 2017 class), as i'm hoping that weighs in pretty heavily in our commitment to Thon and his family.

What if there's an agreement in place for Zeisloft to have 1 scholarship year and 1 year where he pays his way? Assuming Stan leaves, that would be promblem solved unless we add another player to 2015.

This idea of having players pay their own way is always thrown out there. Like every year but it hardly ever happens and won't happen here at IU with Zeisloft

Oh. Well that's settled.

Well I mean it could happen but I just don't see it happening. We don't know what kind of financial background some players come from. Most kids in college wouldn't be able to afford it if they weren't on scholarship.
Every year we definitely have a problem with over signing (we aren't the only school) but I seen tons of players names be thrown out there that they could pay their own way. I remember people talking about Zeller paying his own way at one point, Yogi, etc. If it was something that was more common in college sports I could definitely see it happening here, but in all reality it isn't common. I personally don't see it happening here. Thats my opinion. No reason to get shorts in a knot :)

I don't know how I would feel if Crean failed to bring in a true Center for next year. I'd say, calling for his job regardless of performance probably. I'd become schoosier! But, anyway, it's more than winning or the team at that point, it's incredibly unfair to Holt and Hanner to be forced into that role because of their physical gifts and robbed of the opportunity to play the game successfully. Hanner is not a center, he's a power forward. So is Holt. They're both 4s forced into the 5. And it shows.

The Hanner that we saw at the beginning of L'Vile was playing more like a 4 and was so much better than we'd ever seen him. How unfair is it to these kids that they develop skills and get really good at playing their positions and then end up jammed into the wrong spot out of necessity and criticized for their failure to be stars. Hanner is never going to be the player we need him to be at the 5.

I hate, HATE the oversign and what it does to the overall culture and environment within and outside the program. Say Priller gets Creaned at the end of the season (I hope not)... He's encouraged to move on for reasons (you simply aren't good enough) that the coaches already knew to probably be true in the first place. I can see players moving on if something isn't jiving, but from all accounts Priller is busting his butt. To me that student bill of rights means very little (I understand there's other components) if it doesn't do something with the oversign. The oversign uses players to cover the coaches backside. There's a reason why those things work themselves out...
