IU v SMU- Preview/Predictions/Etc

So if you don't feel at least slight optimism after the team's performance in the first two games then you're still clearly trapped in the event-horizon of the black-hole that was last season (Awful Science jokes!). That said, the team finally faces a real challenge this week in the form of a talented and well coached (some guy named Larry Brown) Southern Methodist University. SMU was ranked in or near the top 10 as recently as this summer, however a foreign defection and NCAA ineligibility has taken away some of SMU’s shine. Still, SMU is a dangerous team who can expect to make some noise in the AAC this year.

C- Yanick Moreira, SR, 6-11, 6ppg, 4rpg

 

Results-

SMU (H) 93- 54 Lamar (A) (61% FG, 31% FG)

SMU (A) 56-72 Gonzaga (H) (31.1% FG, 45%FG)

 

Breakdown-

On paper, SMU’s biggest advantage is their size. C Yanick Moreira and Ben Moore will give IU fits inside, however it may not be as bad as it seems on paper. Both Moreira and Moore were held in check (relatively in the case of the latter) against Gonzaga. Notably, SMU only shot 27% in the paint on Monday night. While it’s safe to assume that SMU will play better in the paint, the combined efforts of Hanner and Troy could be enough to keep the two in check. Hanner and Troy’s athleticism should help to dissipate the height advantage of Moreira and Moore. On the perimeter, SMU allowed Gonzaga to hit 10/24 3pt-FGs, accounting for roughly 40% of their shots. Given IU’s love of the 3pt-FGs, this should bode well for the Rojo/JBJ/Yogi triumvirate.

- SMU's ability so shoot on the road versus IU's ability to keep up the intensity

 

Prediction-

IU wins on the strength of the 3PT Shot and wins 73-65

Good stuff. Watched them last night vs. Zaga (wow, Zaga by the way) and wasn't overly impressed. Expected a better team honestly. If we slow down Nic Moore, we should take this one. Hanner's improving every night and I expect Jimbo and Rob to bring it again. Having Troy and Stan ready to go will also be pretty big. Can't wait!

The Nic Moore vs Yogi matchup should be fun to watch. I know we took a long look at Nic during the recruiting process. He has proven to be a good collegiate player.

 

SMU will undoubtedly come in ready to play, but I see us winning this game.

 

I am excited to see (almost) our entire team on the floor for the first time this season.

Great post! I'm encouraged after the first two games, but I won't really know who this team is until they leave Assembly Hall. Will be interesting to watch this next game against a quality team.

I also watched their game against the Zags----and I think we take them.

 

This will be the first time our guards shoot against length and better athleticism---I am excited to see how that matchup plays out!

it says predictions in thread title so not technically wrong thread. Anyway I dont think they can or should beat us at home. I think the key is going to b on defense I think we will shoot good enough to win but have to play solid d to win the game

I wish SMU was coming in as that top ten team with Mundiay and Kennedy. I really want to see these Hoosiers against some competition. Anyway there is still some talent on their roster and will be better competition than the 2 early cupcakes. Hope Yogi is up for the challenge against Moore. We should get the W by about 5 points. Wouldn't be shocked if Larry Brown comes in and pulls the upset. He is a great coach.
