Revised Season Expectations

Recommended Posts

I was confident that we would win against SMU, but that's just me and my optimistic obsession.

Winning in the way we did last night definitely boosted my expectations. The only thing i'm scared about is if we have an off night in 3-points dropping. We will live and die by the 3ball this year it seems.

We need another 3 or 4 games to see if our 3ball can be consistent.

FWIW, we only shot 36% from 3 pt last night. While not terrible, that will probably be a below average night.

And we won.

Wow, didn't realize it was only at 36%, and we still pulled out the victory. Go Us!

I was also really excited about the lack of turnovers. finally, i can watch without going gray.

Oh my gosh. I ignored this thread since it started because I thought we couldn't revise season expectations until playing SMU but this has been GOLD in terms of watching pure insanity. I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED ALL OF THIS! Hova, you're in charge, next time message me if there's some awesome drama and I haven't made fun of anyone.

I don't post much, but read it all and don't miss games. Ever. I enjoy reading both sides of each thread and have mixed feelings. One thing I can say for sure: HMP's offense isn't necessary with this team, nor will it be needed in most games. His lack of defensive understanding, however, is clear as day. Lamar easily scouted this and had their way with us down low. And the real problem: we didn't adjust. We don't have the depth to adjust. I'm not sure how ugly it will be, but when we face a well coached team that runs X's and O's, with a quality big man, we are in deep, deep doo-doo. Enter, Wisconsin. Enter, Louisville. Even Purdue scares me how, even though they're not well coached, but they have Hammons and he is smart. Hope I'm wrong. Would love to hear some feedback.

You should post more often. Good first post.

And yes, made a condensed version of that comment to my dad earlier.

Astute observations, though I disagree with the idea that HMP's offense isn't necessary. While we're proving we can hit threes, we're also proving we have nothing on the interior, (neither scoring nor defense), and that will get exploited on a much grander scale once we start playing, you know, quality basketball teams.

It's not that I don't think HMP's stepped-up offense wouldn't be of value. Only that his lack of defensive understanding hurts us way worse than his offensive struggles. The same goes for his perceived inability to understand where a ball is likely to come off the rim in a rebounding situation. In good news, some of these things are not driven by ability but by being taught how to do it and learning to read situations. We shall see if he can adjust. Whether he does or not will cast a large shadow on our success or lack there of.

How can you not believe that this won't be a better team next year? Keep these kids together, and we'd have an experienced team with lethal shooters...

I hate looking ahead, but next year's team has a lot of talent, and it's balanced talent.  We actually have a lot of depth in the Front Court next year.  Juwan Morgan, Hanner Parea, Emmit Holt, OG Anunoby, Troy Williams, and maybe even Devin Davis.  That's a lot of depth for what appears to be our weakness this year.  Plus some capable guards coming back.  Like I said, I hate looking forward when the Season just started, but we look to be a pretty tough team, next year.
