IU vs UIndy Post Game Thread

Recommended Posts

I appreciate the rational comments about the game. I am about done with the other board I post on. It is becoming unreadable because of a few morons that think the board exists so they can attempt to convince everyone they are smarter than they actually are. Being a jerk doesn't make you smart.

I am concerned about rebounding and turnovers. Williams and possibly Holt can help the rebounding numbers when they come back. I don't expect Z3 to turn the ball over 5x per game. The stats would have looked better without his struggle tonight.

I am very pleased with Johnson, Yogi, JBJ, and Hanner over 2 games. Johnson didn't shoot well in the first game, but he still managed to score 13. Z3 is going to help us in most games. One bad game doesn't concern me when the rest of the team steps up.

I am interested in how the team responds to getting our suspended players back. Robinson will need to win a spot in the starting lineup. Johnson has it secured now. Overall, the team is playing as well as I had expected without Davis, Williams, and Robinson. I haven't seen Holt, so I have no idea what he will contribute. Hopefully he can rebound as reported.

I'm sure having Troy out there is going to help our rebounding immensely... IT MUST!!!

And I agree with you, Robinson is going to have to fight for his spot back.  before these first 2 exhibitions, I had just assumed that once Stan comes back that he would get his spot in the lineup as well, but I don't think that will be the case anymore.

Another alarming thing was seeing how bad our offense looked when they had 4 on the perimeter defending. They had to back off due to the fouls and us driving, but we couldn't get a good luck at all. I expect teams to force us to throw it in the middle.

man... having Troy back will help us in so many ways.  We need the speed and ups in there to jostle up opponents perimeter defense, and I don't see many others on the lineup who can fly like he can.

Was bored this morning and watched the game again. After my original thoughts amd being pleased I now have a few observations.

If this is an off night for blackmon, I will take it. However, this was probably more like his average. On the contrary now, Blackmon was not engaged on multiple plays (just standing on defense, watching the ball go up and not even trying to go rebound. This was not the case against st Northwood

Need more buy in for team rebounding. Johnson and Collin were the only ones consistent last night crashing. Yogi is hindered on the offensive side for protection but on the defensive end he will box anyone.

Spurts of great ball movement but bad slugs too. We need to make note of how fast and crisp indy was passing.

Glad to see Max in the mix now. Love the confidence and he is also now seeing this isn't high school anymore. A little humility in his game will pay out well as the season goes.

Zeisloft may have struggled offensively but I liked what I saw from him as a leader. Nearly every dead ball, time out, etc I noticed he initiated a huddle when the team needed regrouped and/or seemed to coach/offer advice/just talk to players, especially the freshmen and Hanner a bit too. Nearly every time Hanner missed a FT, FG, or got a TO; Z3 went right up to him and just talked to him. Wasn't all negative too, I noticed him getting really excited with and encouraging Rojo after every shot he hit once he got rolling.

Z, Rojo, Yogi, and especially Hanner were constantly talking on defense too. Noticed this in the last game as well.

Hanner just isn't the player he could be. Very disappointing to see that kid get owned down low by a kid with a pony tail on three separate rebounding opportunities. Holt better be good and April needs to get this injury fixed or we are going to drop some non confs to bad teams.

I see improvement from Hanner but his hands are nightmarish..I don't see how someone with hands that big could have so much trouble holding onto the ball.Half of each practice he should be working a medicine ball if hes not already..

I agree on everyone's stance on the rebound. That being said, I wonder how many rebounds did they get from long misses. It is no excuse, but I remember when I played in high school (and still now in rec leagues) and I would crash the boards just to have the guy who shot it miss so long that it basically bounced back to him.

Again, not an excuse for a lot of the missed rebounds (like the possession where they got four opportunities just to turn the ball over on a travel call), but there were a lot of long rebounds which can be especially difficult to rebound. Especially if you are trying to crash the boards.

Also, I think this team will benefit with troy coming back to get some boards and points, Emit to give HMP some quality breathers (god love you Priller), and Stan to ride the pine until he grows up.

I certainly didn’t keep track of the long rebounds, but both teams launched a ton of 3s, so naturally there were plenty of long rebounds. But the bottom line is that long rebounds are still rebounds, and we better figure out how to get them.

One thing I saw that was not mentioned was the strong, position defense that Max shown when he entered the game.  I noticed on two possession that UI threw it low and couldn't advance to the rim because of Max.  It was either kicked out or I believe stolen by RoJo.  Anyway, I thought he had a couple of key defensive stops down low.

Again, role playing is going to be very key for this team to succeed.

Hanner has had a couple of quick turnovers in the first few minutes of both exhibition games and then settled down. I heard Crean discuss working with him to slow down and concentrate. That is something they can continue to work on. Last year I noticed Williams had a lot of early turnovers. Troy had cut down on those by the end of the year.

I thought Hanner did what he needed to do. I just want him to be consistent when we play the rest of the season.

I was very impressed with Hanner. He got two fouls pretty quickly, but managed to play through it. I don’t think he got another foul all night. And while his effort wasn’t "stellar", he was very serviceable. Not sure he can survive like that in the B1G season, but if he keeps improving, who knows?

Why wont we press? At least on occasions? Im not worrried about the depth. We dont need to the whole game.

Have you seen us press under Crean? It is horrible, and Hanner hasn't shown the ability to be better with his positioning against higher competition, then you add in the other team breaking our press consistently, and Hanner sucking with his positioning. That is asking for a ton of fouls by one of our few big men

I think a lot of Hanner's problem is he is thinking about the move after he catches before its caught.

Like you said, concentration. More mental than physical.

I wouldn't expect to use a press or show anything we would want to run in a regular season game. We don't need to in order to win an exhibition game and we wouldn't want to give any film to future opponents.

The next day what stuck with me is still Collin's game. He was VERY slow, but he looked pretty good given the circumstances. Knocked down at least 2 open shots that I remember and had a few other little plays. Hopefully as he heals more he can get some movement back (he was never a burner) so that he can be better on defense. Excited to see what he brings these next 3 years.

Not worried about Jimbo. He missed some open shots and looked a little lethargic at times, but the shooting will even itself out and the watching will get fixed after looking at film.

Yogi's fast.

Zeisloft obviously isn't going for a 24 spot every night, but on nights he's off, he will bring leadership to the floor that will be absolutely necessary in every game this year.

I'm excited for Stan and Troy to get back now. They made stupid decisions, but the dust has settled a bit, they're still Hoosiers, and they are crucial to our success this year. Especially Troy on the boards as has been mentioned.

It counts Friday. Let's get this going!
