Can Crean stay in Bloomington?

Recommended Posts

On top of the million other things, no one is mentioning one of the most fundamental . Recruiting needs to be WAY better. We can't even get the kids Crean wants BEFORE the problems went public. Now what?

If it can't, we will never be as successful as we want to be.

Landing Bryant or Z would be huge from the recruiting side of things.

And that is just from a recruiting perspective. If Crean doesn't show improve then Glass is making a bad decision.

5 ways to judge a coach

1) Clean upstanding program-not so much
2) in game coaching- not so much
3) winning- not so much
4) recruiting- used to be his ace in the hole, now not so much
5)respect from fans, peers etc- not so much

I can safely say that no search or successor is happening or being lines up. That I know. I thought they would be using this season to set that up but they are not. I was told that as long as glass is supporting crean, there is no search behind the scenes etc

By that and Glass' comments the other day, Glass and Crean are a package deal. If the combination of McRobbie, the trustees, and influential donors feel that Crean has to go, Glass is a goner too.

I agree Parakeet---I like a lot of things he has done as well---but we are IU and with the talent we have had the last 2 seasons he cannot miss the tourney 2 years in a row----that would be unacceptable.

Even with the DD injury---I predict we are better than people expect and will make the tourney.  Holt or someone else is going to have to step up to help Hanner.

From my perspective and most fans we should be on the level of UM, MSU, OSU within the BIG. That IS the expectation. Crean lived up to that for just 2 seasons. Not enough. Plus not only did we grossly underachieve last year we Stunk it up beyond belief off the court.

He needs to improve in all 5 factors I mentioned in my last post to stay. ALL 5 factors!!

My issue with basing success on recruiting is that the measurements for recruiting are based on rankings.

Recruiting success is evidenced by wins. Not stars.

partially true but those rankings are right quite often. Look at our best players on our current team and our worst. Then look at their star ratings and u tell me.

It is up to Crean as the COACH to get the chemistry and results with said talent. Recruiting is part 1 and what u do with it is part 2. He used to be good at part 1 and questionable at part 2 but as of late he isnt great at part 1 either.

It's a problem!

Further, if we are all in on several guys and miss and then bring in lower rated guys then it is clear we are not getting our primary targets.

Still don't think recruiting is the problem----overall I am happy with it.

When it's all said and done I think Hoosier Nation is going to love RoJo, JBJ, Z3 and Holt.

Priller and April are going to take some time ----but even Tim is going to be a 3 point threat every second he gets to play in limited minutes.

Heck--I even love Ritchie and Burton as walk-ons.

We have the talent----if we get them to play together we get the wins----that is on Coach!

To keep his job, I think Crean needs to make the tourney.

To stay in Bloomington, I don't think Crean has to do anything.  Unless exile is still a state sanctioned punishment.  Any legal experts out there want to clarify whether we still exile people?

I'm perfectly fine with him "staying" in Btown.

Question for the board: If you're Glass, do you fire Crean with the program having the issues, real or perceived, that are currently surrounding it? We saw the post-Sampson clusterf*ck, and that it likely shortened the list of coaches that would be willing to take on a rebuild (I believe Tony Bennett of UVA wanted no part of it). Would our list of potential suitors be drastically shortened if Crean isn't permitted to right the ship and leave the program in a more appealing position? Discuss... nicely, please!

You are correct. Glass has no other option because of the ridiculous contract he gave Crean. He's gonna ride that pony right out of Bloomington with Crean in shotgun and maybe Wilson in tow. His comment that Crean was the solution and not the problem means he's doubling down with a bluff hand. He will get called.

Glass appears to be ready to go down with the ship on this one. So I say go ahead and kill two birds with one stone. Can them both. Not sure the administration will do it.

I think Glass has done a pretty good job overall, but yeah they very well may be tied to the hip because of that horrendously stupid contract.

Legette-Jack and Freitag ( if you count "contract not renewed" as being fired)

"Contract not renewed" isn't the same as being fired, even if you counted that three coaches really doesn't equate to him firing "a bunch of coaches" as you stated

I don't see a lot of better coaching options out there willing to come to IU.  If we can get back to the tourney this year---let's keep Crean and get on with it!  He's done a solid job in a lot of areas.  There is so much parity anymore---most teams are going to have struggles from time to time.

My exact thought. Who do people think we are going to bring in?? People need to realize that Brad Stevens is living it up in the NBA and loving it.

How would you know if coaches were lining up? It's not like you're going to hear candidates publicly say "hey if Crean gets fired, I'll take it". We have no idea who would or wouldn't be interested.

To say that Crean isn't respected by his peers, that's an absolute joke... the ones who talk badly about him do it anonymously and often put things out there because he does circles around them in recruiting.

Other coaches consistently mention that IU fans don't know what they have, that they already have a fine coach. They aren't paying lip service. His reputation is excellent among coaches. He's stepped on toes, like all coaches, and that feeds some of the negative stuff...which that stuff really is only that he works people too hard. Yet fans here don't shut up about him being too soft on guys... funny.
