Game 3: SMU question

Recommended Posts

Troy, Stan & holt all come back to the team for Indiana's "premiere" non conference home game.

Meanwhile, the Hoosiers have just played 3 straight games without them and have developed some on the court chemistry.

I know this is crazy, but I honestly think Stan & Troy could hurt us early on in that game when they come back. I have a feeling they will both be over aggressive to catch up for lost time and we will start extremely slow.

I know that's a crazy thought as both a players are amongst the top 5 on our team, but does anyone else feel like this could happen? Could them coming back for that game actually be a mistake?

I hope that's the outcome, just don't see it happening with Crean. Hope I'm wrong about them both trying to "catch up".

Yeah I think that will be an issue. More so if Troy plays as aggressively as he did up North (eh). That team will be ready to play and will obviously be our first legit competition of the year. Im just glad they don't have Mudiay, although it would've been fun to see him play.

Hmmm. Interesting. That’s pretty much the coach's job to manage this kind of stuff. But given the timing of it all, and the fact that the suspensions were levied to coincide with the SMU game (my opinion, but I firmly believe that it is so, "Athletes Bill of Rights" be damned), I could see Crean starting Troy and Stan - and the results could be disappointing.

To some it will be a mistake either way...

I wouldn't start them and see how things play out.  If IU goes down early you could bring one in to provide a spark.  It might give them a little confidence, get the fans back on their side, and build some trust with their teammates.  If you do start them and they get off to a rough start their teammates might press all little more to cover for them.  Just my $.02

I see Williams being back in the starting lineup. I think the suspension hurts Stan the most cause I had been hearing that he was going to be a starter, but I think Zeisloft is going to steal that spot while Stan is out. Especially after tonights game. I don't think that the three of them coming back will hurt us though. Holt would've benefited from tonight's game and I also saw so many opportunities for a famous Troy put back dunk tonight. I think they will fit right in again

I think Troy will be guns a'blazin'. I think if he doesn't overdo it, he will have a very good year. I hate that a social media blunder is fogging my fandom. I want the best for Troy as it relates to IU! I don't want the Vonleh/NBA type selfishness to overcome team play. I want a Vic type season where he expands his game and proves himself without any more issues.

I will finish with this: we are better with Troy on both sides of the court. I am wishing for the best for all parties.

On Stan, we are better with him getting minutes too if he doesn't force too much. Great D. Good slasher. I will be a full fledged fan for these guys upon there return.

Also,

I think there is a big, big benefit for players to get 20-35 minutes to reach their flow, I liked that our best players were near 30 minutes tonight.

IMO come Big Ten time

Yogi, Blackmon should be in the 30-35 range.

Troy, Ziesloft, Perea in the 25-30 range.

Stan, Rojo in the 20-25 range.

That doesn't leave much left but

I expect Holt, Max, Hartman to fight for the remaining minutes

I don't see April getting run. Prayers go out to DD, but it looks like a missed season for DD, and fan favorite MSB is still likely to get mop up duty.

Burton and Ritchie may fight for minutes here and there depending on injuries and focus issues.

A nice tight 8-9 man rotation seems like plenty.

It will b four straight games without them. I do think there will b rust and some nerves with them and if we win the first two games easy I would definitely not start them. I also want to see what turnovers do when they come back cause last year I felt like they were both turnover machines

I think they shouldn't start and they should be eased back in, but Troy will need to play big minutes against them because they actually have a front court that can do some damage. Therefore, troy will probably see about 20-25 minutes against SMU just based on us needing a "big" man. As for Stan, well I don't know yet. Haha

I do not think TC will start either player in the SMU game. I feel he will reward and show respect to the players who have remained solid citizens and represented IU in the manner which is expected, and who haven't managed to fail multiple drug tests. He and IU are already taking heat for a perceived light punishment. I see one or both entering somewhere around the 10:00 minute mark of the first half.  Stan might not play in the first half since he already has at least three strikes. Holt, I have no idea.

Great question.  Gauging chemistry in a practice vs a game is totally different.  I tend to follow the above consensus in that they shouldn't start.  But, I'm also of the belief that, once the stated punishment in served, further passive-aggressive punishment shouldn't continue.  I don't think not starting them is a punishment to them, but rather a kudo to those who worked hard and stayed out of trouble.  I would start the team he would start if they were still suspended and rotate through the first substitutions the same way.  Work the returning players in as needed.

I have an idea...don't start them.

We aren't necessarily in a hurry. Stick with the lineup that we're most comfortable with to start, then ease these guys in over the course of SMU and the next 2 non-cons. Then ramp it up Dec. 2nd against Pitt in the B1G/ACC game.

I bet troy will start he's too athletic not to but with our set of guards it would be better for Stan not to start

Yeah I never really had Stan starting in the first place. He's a good sixth man. And I know we need Troy to start that game and play starter's minutes, but I think it might throw things off.

What exactly is wrong with April at this point? Is he turning into another Jurkin , as far as injuries go?
