What’s confusing is, they suspended him indefinitely, he was able to plea down to misdemeanors, and then they allowed him to resume activities and return to the team. He practiced all last year and just played in their recent international games….yet all of a sudden they kick him off campus?

They should have never let him back, period. Huge mistake by the university.  But they did…and Sounds like they are now kicking him out of school (not at the direction of the athletic department or coach) based on public backlash, even though there haven’t been any other recent legal issues, and he’s been with the team and in school for a year since the incident.

For our legal board members..could he sue? They let him back into school and on the team due to some set of conditions that he must of met, he hasn’t had any legal trouble since, and they are now kicking him out of school because of public pressure, not conduct since the incident.

I think there was pressure from DV survivors who were not pleased that he received such light punishment. I can't blame them, especially since it sounds like it was a vicious incident. It probably shouldn't have been plead down to a couple of misdemeanors. He slapped the lady, punched her multiple times, and smothered her with a pillow. He was initially charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, strangulation, unlawful restraint, and false imprisonment. I'm just surprised this didn't happen sooner and it's not a good look for Capel letting him stay on the team in the first place. It just took the school longer than it should have to do the right thing. Capel thought winning was more important.

I don't feel sorry for him as I think it was deserved and that he should've gotten a stronger legal punishment. He totally exploded over being upset about getting his phone and himself wet. Such a violent reaction to something so trivial is no joke. This is likely not the first time and probably won't be the last time.

I agree…and absolutely no sympathy here. Reading the report, it was bad. Also surprised he was able to get it plead down.

Just wild he was able to return in the first place. He should have never stepped a foot back on campus.

But they let him return and finish his freshman year, and be involved all summer. Was just curious if he had any leg to stand on. Overall, just a Horrible look for Pitt.

IUPUI announced their schedule and it's as clear a "we're going to win 4 games this season" schedule as you can get.

Actually is pissing off the Horizon League fans with how many games don't count to the NET ranking or are with teams in the 300s like Elon and Eastern Illinois.

4 wins would be their best season in a while.....

And there's a school in Indianapolis that is one of them.  You may have heard of it, I think it has the Indiana University handle to it.

A combination of lack of communication with fans and students that games are happening at most of these institutions along with virtually zero television (they're all student or local guys broadcasting games that are streamed either on ESPN+ or services you never heard of) make attending regular season games almost an impossible task. It also doesn't help that sports fans who go to these colleges will probably be rooting for either schools they followed growing up or more successful programs.

The replies hilariously make his point. I despise rankings. I prefer tiers and Painter is absolutely a top tier college coach.

True, but the question is "best" college coach yet to make a Final Four.

I could easily sell Mike Woodson as the best under that criteria; he just hasn't been in college very long and hasn't built up the "he's one of us" goodwill among his brethren.

Woody has outcoached Matt Painter in four out of four head-to-head matchups so far and was a wide-open Parker Stewart three pointer away from winning all four games.

Fair enough. But the guy just won the B1G and B1G tournament with Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer. Very few guys pulling that one off.

Also true and no doubt Painter is very good. But he did so with zero injuries and double plays against every one of the B1G’s bottom four.

Good discussion.  I hate that over the years I’ve come to realize Painter is a top tier coach.  If it wasn’t Purdue, I’d root for his teams every year.  The fact he does coach Purdue makes me root for his epic failure.  Unfortunately his recruiting has only been steadily improving over the years.  He also seems to have a knack recently of hitting on unheralded kids, mostly bigs but guards to some degree.

Woodson beating him has been glorious and is one of the factors Woody can tuck in his back pocket for now.

I am genuinely concerned Purdue is gonna be a legit contender this season but ultimately I still think guard play holds them back.  Colvin is way better than many realize. He probably should start over one of the guards ideally. Kaufman/Furst/Gillis are breakout stars possibly. And Edey is one of the most unguardable bigs in the country in years.

All that said, I think we matchup pretty well against them if we turn it into a track meet. I’m obviously way higher on IU this season than the national guys assuming we stay healthy.  I just wanted us to add a sniper like Knecht or Cam Spencer or a do everything guard like Reeves.

This is the article this conversation evolved from. Interesting to chew on kind of the nature and value of fit a little bit. Love the respect Randy Bennett gets here. That dude is as good as it gets. But he is just not temperamentally suited to a fishbowl.  There’ve been so many great, great coaches who won big in tough gigs but lacked the ambition or ego or temperament to take on jobs at the highest level or maybe they just wouldn’t have won the press conference. Majerus, the great John Kresse(my all-time favorite college coach, hence always referred to as “the great”), Bob McKillop, John Becker, Stew Morrill. Every 1 of them and lots of others, are or were miles better than many, many Power Conference guys. Yet, Majerus is the only 1 who got a sniff. There’ve been so many who got no shot while the Mark Turgeons and Josh Pastners get years to display their mediocrity.  So, really, the whole question of who the best is in this sense is pretty silly since it sort of presupposes equality of opportunity that’s obviously not present. Painter deserves the credit he gets, but him not making a final 4 would be a far greater failing than Randy Bennett. Not sure I really have a point here. Just ruminating a bit.

This is such a weird move. I feel bad for the non revenue sports more than Football/basketball. My understanding is that some Olympic sports that are not played in the ACC are obviously not moving. This expansion thing is getting crazy.
