Great move and horrible move at the same time. It is completely bogus that Universities can sell signed merchandise and make millions of players likenesses. Texas A&M rode Johnny Manziel's coattails all the way to a stadium renovation. Any of us who made something or had a product but made no money off of it would be suing. On the other hand, you have idiots like Jameis Winston. This is great news for responsible collegiate athletes who need the money. This is bad for the players who are given a $5,000 check and act anything like that piece of garbage Jameis. There's no right answer to what should be done about athletes and paying them. I just hope we aren't creating more of a hierarchy on campuses than is already implemented as far as athlete treatment.

Exactly.

I think the money should be put into some sort of monitored account through the university with strict guidelines/regulations on spending. Allow the athletes to buy food, clothes, whatever they like within reason; ensures that they use it responsibly IMO.

Although I personally have nothing against Jameis, I get what you're saying. Irresponsible athletes would spend irresponsibly.

Jameis Winston is the poster child for immature criminal athletes. Theft, sexual assault, property damage. Never in my entire life have I rooted for Notre Dame until last Saturday. He's above the law in Tallahassee

Never actually paid attention to him or FSU. Or CFB outside of the B1G really. Didn't know about the assault or the property damage. Not gonna lie I laughed when I heard about the crab legs though.

Definitely sounds like a shady character.

This is going to be an interesting wrinkle for recruiting. Imagine other schools trying to win over someone that's also considering UT, now.

This was my first thought... If this were an NCAA idea that was everywhere then I would be all for implementing it because I feel it is unfair to student athletes the way the NCAA is currently, specifically since they are not even allowed to have a job.... but if this is just at Texas and per the article they are the richest school... how is this in any way fair.... Recruits have the option of getting paid to play college sports at Texas or play elsewhere for free (legally free... nevermind all the under the table deals).... that will obviously be used in recruiting to Texas advantage.

This whole deal is horse cramp u play for your school either to build your resume to go pro or for fun and the love of your school and sport. Yes the school makes money off it and so does the ncaa but I doubt they would have the sport if they lost money on it. If u pay college then why not high school they make money on that and if they have a star they make a lot more money. I think people need to get over it.

I honestly can't tell if you're joking. The IHSAA sets ticket prices for games. Otherwise, how in the world would a high school player make money for a school? Let's look at Trey Lyles. Tech High School basketball had lower attendance than my neice's softball games. That's not a joke. The best player in Indiana and no one cared. Now let's look at a school like Twin Lakes. No one of note has ever come out of that high school. They're fairly average at sports. But the games are packed. Nothing adds up about the High School comment whatsoever.

your kidding right? Lebron sold out every high school game and had celebs lining the seats. Damon Bailey filled 30,000 seat gyms. Not every good player draws a crowd but some do and the school makes bank on it.

There is a high school gym with 30,000 seats? I thought high school athletics purpose was to not only pay for their activities but support the school? Actually pretty sure of that cause when they don't make enough they have fundraisers to pay for them.

No the largest is like just under 10,000 down in new castle. 11 seats bigger than cameron indoor.

That sounds a lot like food stamps.

It's not up for debate... It happened as another posted noted. 41,046 attendance. High school players don't always play in high school gyms

Not up for debate cause it happened once in this state? Indiana with the most hyped prep getting ready to head to IU of all time. I knew the answers to my rhetorical questions but was curious of the response. Kind of disappointed this weak response was all I got. If you don't understand why that situation is different than any other then you don't understand high school basketball in this state as well as what Bailey's background or situation. You do realize the accommodations made to make that situation happy right?
