(2017) SF Kris Wilkes to UCLA

Recommended Posts

I will not be satisfied with we gave it all we had and he just didn't come here. Crean and company get paid big money to run this ship. If we can't consistently land good in-state talent than sory but that is not good enough for me. This is Indiana, a hot bed for talent. If Groce can get a top 5 class at Illinois when they have sucked every year, there is a problem .

... Yeah if only Crean had to ability to control free will and make Wilkes come here... As long as our recruiting overall is strong, it is asinine to say something is wrong because of the personal choices made by one individual.

Obviously this is not an ideal situation, but let's say Wilkes signs with UCLA and Alford is fired after the season. Would Wilkes automatically be released from his LOI and free to reopen his recruitment? Or would he still be bound to UCLA?

No, that would not result in an automatic release, but there have been quite a few recruits released from LOI's because of that situation.

There have also been a few high profile cases where they weren't.

Off topic but linked as well. Some scouts are saying Bryant may need another year!! IF that happens cause obviously the season hasn't even started yet, but if Wilkes knows that there is a chance an already good IU team with him & without Bryant could be even better with Bryant back & him coming here....along w everything else I find it hard to see he can find a better situation than us. That's with or without Bryant. I feel like Alford's seat is very hot, but much like Crean's all it takes is a good year to keep him safe. I wouldn't bank on him being fired but with his son gone after this year it would be the best timing if he struggles.

That sucks!! I know he had some academic issues, but that kid had the feel of a really good player in the right situation.

They only lose Hamilton & Alford, but Ball isn't likely to stay either so 3 schollys. They have 3 commits & Charles O'Bannon is looked at as a UCLA get all the way. His dad played there and won a title. He's also a wing and other than Wilkes there are also strongly after Cody Riley. He's not a wing by any means, but I know these things have a way of working themselves out, but maybe that's what Wilkes was talking about in his last interview before the Star one. I know you could say the same about us and you'll always make room for a kid as good as Wilkes, but I just see so many things that should be going in our favor that aren't. I see that Wilkes loves the attention and he could just be making smokescreens to add to the drama of his recruitment, but that'd been a better guess a week ago maybe not much so now.

Just curious do u think when the 2017 class is final that Illinois will still have a top 5 class? Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Louisville and others are just getting started. No way Illinois ends up with a top 5 class. They are up there now because they got early commitments. It will be disappointing if we don't land Wilkes in my opinion because he was the staffs number 1 target. It's irrelevant if he was a "in state" or "out of state" recruit.

When all said & done Illinois will be in the 10-15 range after the surge in recruiting that'll happen now & until the season ends. Good class for Grove with everything going on, but Wilkes ain't going there its us or UCLA so I don't see them breaking top 10. Tillmon made that class, which is still crazy he choose Illinois.

No... I don't think Illinois ends up that high, but it was just a reference to a team that sucks and a coach that could be fired any season, Gross is pulling in great talent for all the uncertainty. I am always a little hard on Crean, I know, I just view Indiana kids a little different than some here. Growing up with Alford, Cheaney, and Bailey, it is hard watching our best kids go out of state. Heck, I don't think we have to get them all, but our last Indiana Mr basketball was Cody Zeller. I've been hearing about this 2017 Indiana class now for awhile and how good of shape we were with all of the instate kids. Seems like we hear that every year. Now it's the 2018 class . Hope we land Wilkes! I started telling my co-workers it was sounding good from some of our best message board guys and now I look dumb lol.

I hear you, I grew up with those guys as well but college basketball is a different beast today. Kids can pretty much go anywhere and they know they can get noticed. Does mr basketball mean as much today to these kids as it did in years past. Heck the Indiana all star team had kids not attend because they had other stuff going on. We might of missed out on only 2 years of Gary Harris but we did get 4 years of yogi(some might argue he could of been mr basketball). Would having Zac Irvin on our teams in the last 3 years of made them any better then they already were? In my opinion I don't think they would of been better and we might of missed out on a player like Troy (good Troy)

I still see Wilkes recruitment going like Theo pinson a couple years ago. Most people in Carolina thought he was heading to Bloomington and end the end he choose to play close to home so his family could see

I am shocked you would think you know what Wilkes thinks and utilize your unbiased opinion to use that along with no information to say one way or the other he is going to UCLA. I. Am. Shocked. I told you so.

It's amazing how some come on here only to post negativity.. It's like they're lurking to pounce on anything that could go against IU.

It's amazing how the three of you continue to criticize me for posting my opinion. Every time. It's pretty sad and pathetic. Everyone on this thread is putting their opinion out there. It's a blog...There is no negativity. It's realism. Maybe the theee of you should remove the red glasses and get your heads out of the sand. It's not 1987 anymore. What is so wrong or off about my statement? Please explain. I'd like to know. Check my history. I've been a Crean supporter for years and have defended this program time after time. But IN MY OPINION, if that alright with you three, this situation is bleak. If I'm wrong, I'll still be here. If not, I'll be here to rub it in your faces.

I get Baltimore thoughts regarding recruiting (except the rubbing it in face part-that's juvenile)

A year ago we stood very well with several indiana kids. The indiana part isn't important but 3 5 stars and a high 4 star. We won't get 3 and it's possible we don't get the other. As of now we have a low 4 star and 2 mid three stars committed. It's crunch time. This last commit or 2 needs to be a home run unless our current recruits far outplay their projections ( which they might).

It is concerning that year after year we struggle with top targets. TB was a major piece. OG was recruiting brilliance.

Anyway, let's just hope he lands the pieces we need.

The red glasses? Ok. Take a step back from your perceived idea of where IU stands with Wilkes and look around beyond pro IU people to see where we stand here. By all accounts we are in a very strong position for this kid and nothing has changed with people in the know. The only people who are up in arms are people trying to read intent into something that isn't there. So you may take your own advice and look at everything logically. This is a kid that said distance is a negative because his parents want to watch him play. He has came to our games since the fourth grade. We were the first team on him. He has a great relationship with the staff, current, and future players. So please tell me where you got he is going to UCLA.

Oh and I don't give a damn either way. Unlike what you said I will not rub it in your face. I know you hope it's that way, but every year this is a common theme. Every year we end up getting the majority of kids Crean goes hard after. Every year that is recruiting. There are hits or misses. That is the nature of it. But look at the whole situation.

As for your 87 comment. Why are you then bitching it's been 6 years since we have signed a Mr. Basketball? You don't see the three of us say anything about that. As if that is the be all.

Me step back from my opinion? My opinion, just like yours, is based on the information floating around out in space about Wilkes. There have been plenty of kids who grew up watching IU and IU was on them early and they ended up leaving the state.. My opinion is based on recent quotes, rumors from other message boards I'm on, and recent history with in state recruits. How is that any different than the way you are coming up with your opinion?

It's not any different.

Just don't get so pissy when people don't like your opinion.

You asked what was wrong with your statement. I gave actual facts about the kid. The only thing you can come back with is mmmkay. Don't be so pissy if that's the best you can come back with when people disagree with your assertion of "reality" on this situation of Kris Wilkes. Other recent recruits have no bearing on Kris Wilkes. Would love to see that other information other than its IU or UCLA. I too frequent other boards and have checked in a bit on Illinois and UCLA boards as well as Twitter.
