Class of '66 Old Fart

IUBB vs Lindenwood - Thursday, 11.20.25 @ 6:00 on BTN

Recommended Posts

First year in D-1, and located two states away? Does this team have a coach, or someone on its staff, who is a distant relative of someone on our staff? Did they grow up near Bloomington and dream of getting to walk into Assembly Hall on gameday? Was Longwood unavailable, and we looked at this and said "close enough"?

Or, (more likely) is this another example of someone in our athletic department scouting out the dregs of D-1 in search of easy wins?

We need to schedule all games with their impact on metrics in mind, not because of some obscure connection with an assistant coach. I think this regime has done a better job of it than the last three, but still some work to be done.

To be fair it looks like UConn, Duke, and UNC all also play 3 teams ranked in the 300s in KenPom. Not an expert on scheduling by any means but seems like we've got a similar framework to the top programs. No longer bringing a knife to a gun fight like we were with Woody. The matchups themselves may not be exciting obviously but I don't think anything to take issue with the staff over. They'd be an outlier to not have any very "sugary" cupcakes.

  • Chicago State plays DePaul, Saint Louis, Butler, Minnesota, Iowa, Loyola IL, Indiana
  • Alabama A&M plays Indiana, Clemson, and Ole Miss
  • Lindenwood plays Texas Tech, Saint Louis and Indiana.

  • UConn plays New Haven (360/365[!] on KenPom), UMass Lowell (335), East Texas A&M (333)
  • UNC plays Central Arkansas (348), NC Central (346), USC Upstate (320)
  • Duke plays Army (351), Niagara (316), Howard (319)

It's a long season. Lot of factors influence how the schedule is made.

Personally, I would rather see us play Indiana State, Butler, and/or Ball State than Lindenwood or Incarnate Word, but there may be good reasons we don't do that?

I get the sentiment and think those matchups would be more fun too for geographic reasons. However...

KenPom rankings:

  • Butler - 62
  • Indiana State - 184
  • Ball State - 268

  • Kansas State - 66
  • Marquette - 67
  • Siena - 170
  • Incarnate Word - 192
  • Bethune Cookman - 193
  • Lindenwood - 334

From a strength of schedule POV, each school serves a different purpose. And we've scheduled the level of competition you mentioned, they're just not local / big names.

I get that....but that kind of makes my point, by playing some locals you can get the same level of competition and generate more local interest at the same time.

Blamed some of it on the VB game going on simultaneously or at least Suhr the younger did

This team has only been in Div 1 for a year…lol. Not sure what they would expect.
