Thanks for this...

— DeVries said after practice the offense was ahead of the defense, and that was pretty clear throughout practice.  At one point the scholarship players were struggling to get stops against a group of walk-ons and graduate managers.  One area that has DeVries’ attention right now — where he wants help defenders to be positioned.

Certainly to be expected that defense is behind the offense at this stage, but the bold bit sounds like quite a ways to go...

Granted it's July, but obviously you'd expect scholarship players to be able to impose their will a bit. Hopefully by the time the season is here they can play competent team defense and continue improving during the season in that aspect.

Tayton Conerway:  It’s interesting — everyone’s question about Conerway is whether he can make threes.  I don’t remember seeing him miss a three.  Again, don’t overreact to just one day, but if you came into this cold you’d think he was a good shooter. Conerway should be a good on ball defender too.

My vote for X-factor for sure. We're going to have a very fun offense to watch, even more so if he can shoot ~35% from 3 IMO.

— Jasai Miles:  Miles has potential.  He has good length, can defend, rebound and make shots.  It will be interesting too see more of him in Puerto Rico.  Enright’s familiarity with DeVries’ system and standards probably gives him a slight edge right now.

Probably my second choice for X-Factor. If Conerway's abilities set the floor, I think Miles' is a big factor in the ceiling/potential.

Quote

— Conor Enright:  Enright’s intensity on both ends really stood out.  He’s a true competitor.  He’ll probably be a player the other teams and their fans hate.  And he’s probably a better player than most people are anticipating.  He flashed on both ends.

I like a high-energy guard off the bench that knows the system. Not comparing them, but I think what everyone hoped we'd get from Gabe Cupps - a pass first PG that plays tough D - we'll actually see from Enright. IMO a nice piece for a program building a new culture.

Quote

— Trent Sisley:  Sisley was the only freshman on the floor, but you wouldn’t know it.  His year at Montverde has prepared him for the physicality and talent level.  And he’s skilled and a good shooter.  It would be surprising if he didn’t carve-out a role.

If he carves out a role as a freshman, that's a great thing... but very curious how it shakes out with only so many minutes to go around. As in, if he plays a significant amount of minutes, does that mean Harris/Alexis/someone else isn't panning out?

Unfortunate Dorn and Drake have been injured. I think Dorn will be a really key factor in how the team fares.

Can't wait for reports out of Puerto Rico.

It's learning the schemes and defensive sets, not individual defense. Doesn't surprise me, all sets are new to them both individually and as the 5 on the floor. That takes time.

I was pretty early to hop on the Enright train when he hit the portal and basically had exactly this impression from seeing him play in person. The quotes you posted are all pretty sunshiny, but I like this one a lot.

Enright is Gabe Cupps if Gabe Cupps had never met Mike Woodson.

So I guess he's not Gabe Cupps; he's hopefully Michael Lewis or Earl Calloway.

I truly hate the Cupps comp to my core lol.

Cupps is gonna suck really hard with Diebler as his coach too I would wager. So Cupps can be a comp for any player that sux  bad but could be okay if they played with their hair on fire.

If we could avoid comparing our current guys to not so good Woody players that would be appreciated!  ;-)

So I shouldn't say that:

  • Tucker Devries has a jumper just like Mgbako's,
  • Jason Drake is wearing IU gear he bought at Leal's yard sale,
  • Jasai Miles has Malik Reneau's infectious grin,
  • Reed Bailey has the same cheesy mustache as CJ Gunn,

AND MOST TROUBLING

  • Rod Clark is currently sitting in what used to be Armond Hill's Napping Chair ®

Copy that.

I thought Cupps handled himself adequately given the situation he was thrown into. I was really annoyed he didn’t fix his jumper in the offseason though. He should be a rotation guy at OSU.

Not sure what I think about the Enright / Coneroy backcourt. On one hand I’d hope for a little more shooting. Otoh, it would go a long way to adding a little defensive punch. Either way, playing that small we’ll have to rebound like crazy.

Obviously we'll attempt to have our "bigs" on the floor, but in the deepest recesses of my soul I don't think we have a player over 6'8 that belongs in a big ten game. I'd embrace it and go with Sisley, Dorn, Tucker, Wilkerson and Conerway. Push it, push it, push it and lead the nation in shot attempts.
