New Coach Preferred Characteristics

Recommended Posts

A passionate, highly competitive, hates to lose (and doesn’t much) personality. A thinker. Someone that prides himself on winning the game in scout and in practice. A good evaluator of talent.
Less than 60 years old. Todd Golden at the youngest. 40-58. A very confident individual, that can react to tougher times.

And it wouldn’t hurt if it’s someone the National media likes because lord knows we could use some positive pub after these past 10 years.

Off the top of my head:

1) Would love the 1st digit of their age to be a 4. Ok with a 5. A 6 needs to be a pretty special guy.
2) Bullet-proof self-belief.
3) The ability to articulate to both fans and recruits what their core values are. “This is what you WILL see from a _________. _________ team.”

4) The ability to convey why this job at this moment. Crean’s “It’s Indiana” meant something.
5) Places great value in training and moving coaches along. I want a guy who develops a tree.
7) Sure, I want a basketball junkie, but I want someone who becomes ingrained in the school and community in some other fashion.
8) Don’t care about their specific philosophy, there are a million ways to win, but I care about constantly assessing what they’re doing. Underwood changed everything he was doing his 2nd year at Illinois. Gard did that this year. Enormous respect for that.

I want Paint Samptino as our coach.

Painter off the court with a dash of his offensive flexibility to go along with a combination of Sampson and Pitino's consistent toughness and relentless effort on the court. I can tell you what Houston and St John's are going to look like the next 5 years and no one looks forward to playing them.

That's the perfect blend of identity, culture and intangibles. You've had to live a little to have their qualities. Had to have been around the block a bit and overcome some adversity, to include mistakes.

Embedding yourself in the high school coaching community is a must. Understand we had 25 years of the Bob Knight Show. We like to know ****. We want to be in on it as a fanbase.

I'd bet the house it's going to be Dusty and he'll be fine, ok even good. But his teams won't be Samptino.

1)  Will do everything it takes to win

2)  Prioritizes winning

3)  Obsesses over ways to win games

4)  Sets public goals about winning and acts on it

5)  Recruits to a style that wins

6)  Understands than winning (as long as it's done within the very loose rules in place) is all that ultimately matters

7)  Recruits kids who are winners

Oh, and a few shooters would help.  And kids who understand the game rather than just the sport.  Basketball players vs athletes who play basketball.

Did I mention winning?

That is not a personal characteristic. That is a goal.

Please stay on topic.

Sorry, I just trying to be funny!  :)

Can evaluate talent to fit style of play

Trusting coaches and players

openminded, not just his way or hit the highway, including sometimes changing your style of for a game or to exploit one of your players talent

Simple.  Coach Cig clone.  :)

My own preferences:

Understands building a program and a culture is a process.  Executes that process to perfection. Winning is a result of that process

Never satisfied.  Enjoy the "win" for 24 hours max, then back to business.

Self-evaluation and isn't afraid to adjust.  Doesn't get locked into his scheme, but will adjust based on the talent available.

Can assemble a group of misfit toys and get them to play well -- multiplication instead of addition.

Can motivate his players, because 18-21 year olds need motivation.

Is no nonsense, but isn't an a-hole.

It's 2025 and no one has come up with cloning technology someone should get cracking on that.

  • Earns respect, doesn't just demand it.
  • Develops team Captains as our floor leaders.
  • With energy, coaches and adjusts on the sidelines.
  • Actually prepares the team for the next game up (tactician).
  • Manages recruiting, portal, and NIL to establish roles and needs of the program.
  • Uses resources for a total program approach to IU basketball (i.e. Assistants, Dir. of Operations, etc.)
  • Doesn't accept losing in any capacity.
  • Has a plan to achieve goals, not just verbalize goals.
  • Establish a new era of IU traditions and history.

-Been associated with a Power 5 program (doesn’t have to be with one now).

Preferably a successful one in his time there. Any experience is important but seeing success and what it takes to achieve it at the high major level would be great.

I pretty much agree with your list. I'll add a few:

- has had recruiting success against his peers

- post season success of some sort

- teams have an identity

- coaches a modern style

- always learning and adapting

- willing to listen to advice from assistants

- somewhat balanced offense/defense

- has shown success at player development

  • Experienced at P4 level as HC or AHC
  • Young-ish (under 55)
  • Good recruiter - can relate to HS/college kids. Holds them accountable for on- and off-court stuff
  • Can teach and develop skills
  • No serious off-court issues
  • Runs a modern offense and tough, hard-nose defense
  • Energetic
  • Self-aware and honest ... can "own" any shortcomings
  • Doesn't throw team/players under the bus
  • Doesn't play two-bigs offense, no trey-phobia
  • Recognizes that ALL fans are TRUE fans... doesn't try to drive a wedge in the fanbase.

I'm looking for something like this.

Oh you are?

Well then, there is this. He just ******* gets it.

Really young, tons of P5 experience, believes in the fans and the brand as an undeniable asset, wishes he had more NIL, complete gym rat and obsessive compulsive student of the game, honest, modern offense, funny as hell, intense, culture builder.

“People ask me all the time how long my dad will coach and my answer is ‘I don’t care’. … “I just want him happy and healthy.” “The greatest thing I ever did was get out from under my dad and work for Billy Donovan. He shaped my life.”

Stuhoo, you’ve had worse takes. Don’t know if lil’ dicky is the next great coach but we could do worse methinks. Unfortunately I think he’s still a bigger gamble than we want to take.

If it’s Cronin vs Richard I’ll takes my chances with lil’ dicky over the mick the @@@@ Cronin.

Sorry, I got my moneys worth on that pun.

I got mocked pretty badly for suggesting Gates a whole lot four years ago.

I’m a reasonably educated basketball fan but no savant. And anyone IU hires? I’m going to be an optimist and look at the bright side.

But I’m pretty ******* perceptive on leadership characteristics. Richard Pitino is going to succeed at a P5 school as long as he gets decent resources.
