Penn State post game thread

Good win tonight. I wish this would be a copy and paste for how to approach remaining games but this team seems to be full of guys who play great for a game and are a disaster the next.  What really helped the last 2 games was the effort. How many times the last few years did it look like the team did not care. Currently we have several guys willing to dive on the floor (even jump on opponents laying on the floor) fighting for loose balls.  I love the tips back on rebounds as well. Rice may not be scoring well but his D and penetration and then creating openings for others are all effort driven.

So I will not be surprised if next game Ballo and MM have a combined 10 points but Rice and Gallo get 30.  Good to see the effort.  Good to get a road win. This win is to be expected though if we are going to have a good to great season. Does not mean we have figured things out yet but big ten road wins against average to good teams are still good wins.

Ballo was an absolute monster today. That's the guy who was first team All Pac 12.

The first 8 minutes of the second half are probably as good as we have looked for the last 1.5 years. The spacing was so much better - Woodson has to see it.

The spacing was much better.....but it was the same group of players that were 2 of 11 from three in the first half and scored 29 points.

Little nuggets from the podcast with Hummel and Goodman before the Penn State game:

-- already mentioned this, but Goodman said that Galloway was back coming off the bench where he belonged and Hummel corrected him that Galloway had started the last 8 games.

-- Goodman said 'okay, let's say Indiana wins their next three -- Penn State, USC, and Iowa -- the question still is, who have they beaten?'

....does actually follow basketball?  Two of those games are quad ones.

I think some including me don’t look at teams in terms of “quads”.  None of those teams are that good in my opinion

When Mgbako was shooting FTs toward the end of the game, Kern was talking crazy smack to Mack - who calmly sank both.

This post game question at 4:05 from a reporter asked what Kern saw from Mgbako and Ballo, what kind of challenges they presented. His response will serve as quite the bulletin board material IMO.

Wow well, I didn't care too much for that kid before, but what an arrogant comment! Can't acknowledge that two opposing players had good games and beat you at "home?"

I couldn’t tell what he said exactly. Someone please help if you don’t mind

"I mean, nothing for real, we just was [inaudible - I think he’s saying ‘lacking’ or ‘lackadaisical’] on defense, we just didn’t have a good shooting game today. Nothing really from them."

I thought we started the first half pretty well. We played an extended stretch of the first half with Carlyle, Tucker, and Leal all in at the same time - that was when the offense started to bog down.

Thank you! You went to the game right? Curious but with Luke in the game. I feel like the guys are more connected on defensive end because of his leadership. You see it that way?

Absolutely agree - Luke is such an important part of the team. I hope he gets another year of eligibility - would love a second year with him. He tries so hard, I'm sure because he grew up an IUBB fan, and it's impossible for that energy to not rub off on his teammates.

He is not a great 1 on 1 defender but doesn't have to be - if he can be Miller Kopp-lite on D, that's huge. I was surprised how well he and Mgbako did in the same 5 vs PSU. If we improve throughout the course of the season, I think a lot of credit goes to Goode for that between his shot now falling, bringing effort on D, and showing more as a vocal leader. Love that kid being in the locker room.

Also saw a tweet that the two times we've shot FTs during techs/flagrants this year, Luke has brought the team together at halfcourt and interlock arms/hands on shoulders... hard not to root for him...

Rice needs to get some new shoes. That was freakin crazy!

Seriously though... what's up with that?

Seems like all year he has been good for one or two out of control drives a game.

Seeing it yesterday up close, he did not look very steady at all. Almost as if his knees were made of rubber.

Would like another year with Rice...

He struggled with Penn State's very good ball pressure. Not the first or last guy that will happen to. Rice was quick enough to beat that pressure several times, but then he seemed to get stuck between two thoughts - should I drive this all the way, or pull it out and run offense?

I think Rice is the key to this team. Maybe not our best player, but our most irreplaceable one.
