I remember **** and Tom, along with Jon McGlocklin, Steve Redenbaugh, Ron Peyser, Al Harden being part of the last good Branch McCracken team.  RIP sir.

He was just a bit before my time at IU. My memory of him as a player was with the Suns and I was 10 or 12 and I think he retired just when I got into high school. He was a freaking good player.

1 of the truly under-appreciated legends of IU basketball. High School All-American. Mr Basketball at Manual with his twin brother, Tom as well as Trester Award winner. All American at IU. Multiple time NBA All Star. Exemplary representative for the school for basically 60 years. Hell of a run.

One of my earliest memories of watching Indiana basketball with my dad was the '63-64 team with the Van Arsdales, Jon McGlocklin, Vern Pfaff and Steve Redenbaugh on WTTV Channel 4 on a little 14" black and white television... I was 10 years old, and didn't understand (at the time) why my dad was constantly yelling at the tv... :D

For an in depth, fascinating look into a notable era of Indiana basketball:

It’s probably covered in the link, but check out Tom and D*ck’s career NBA, or college, stats.  They’re numbers are amazingly close throughout their careers.

Living in Scottsdale, I had the pleasure to sit and talk with Dick several times at his Art Studio. He had a table right outside his shop doors that he would sit at and work on his art. He was a lovely man, that was always friendly and greeted you with a smile on his face. He was also always eager to discuss IU Basketball every time I stopped in.

Really sad to hear that he passed. He always commented about how much his stroke had impacted him. Living legend both in IU basketball and Phoenix Lore.

RIP Dick.

Dang. Van Arsedales, Jimmy Rayl, Bill Garrett, etc…there’s a whole era(s) of iu basketball I wish more people, including myself, knew about.

RIP.

I remember a little about watching Jimmy Rayl, the splendid splinter, when I was pretty young. Bill Garrett was before my time. I do remember Don Schlundt very vaguely. Too many people believe IU basketball started with Bob Knight, but there were great teams for years before that. Some of my best memories are of winter nights in the fifties working in our dairy barn and listening to IU basketball on the radio.
