When do the roster size changes take effect? At some point soon, kickers will have to be on scholarship since walk-ons will not be allowed.

Looks like it starts in 25-26. I’m not sure if you’d ever be able to find the number, but I think a lot of *starting* K/P/LS (can’t forget the snappers) are on schollie already. For example, I believe Sean Wracher was a scholarship guy from day one.

we have significantly fewer holes than last year, though....

WR-- Sarratt, Cooper, Becker

RB-- Black+Green+Khobie Martin

OL- Evans (on the mend), Lynch, Smith..... I also assume Nick Kidwell can get a med RS, that would be a boost.

QB- Tayven, 2 FR

DL- Tucker, Burris, Landino, Ndukwe... (Kamara has eligibility, but I would think he's gone)

LB- Fisher, does Walker have more eligibility? Hardy, Jones

DB- Ponds, Ferrell, Johnson, Sharpe---- DBs have a chance to be excellent.

I think we have a hole at QB for next year.  I do not think Tayven has produced to the level Rourke had at Ohio and while he has shown flashes, he is not proven.  I do take some encouragement that this staff has developed QBs and am hopeful they will do that with Tayven but it will be interesting to see how hard we go after a starting caliber QB in the portal.

Agreed.  Jackson needs to be our backup next year if we want to come close to success next year.

I agree. From what I have seen the past two years, I'm not sold on Jackson at qb. Maybe with another off season with this staff he can get there. I'm not sure CCC has seen enough to just roll with him next year. I expect us to go after a proven guy like Rourke in the portal.

Maybe, but Jackson has looked very good this season.

Completely agree.

  • Arm strength
  • Accuracy
  • Mobility and size
  • Great teammate and potential leader

The one thing he doesn't yet have is the ability to make in-play decisions like Rourke does at a savant level. But Rourke is a 24 year old that has seen it all, and Tayven has only had about ten games to develop that skill.

Tayven has the tools and the personal makeup to be the guy. Between Cig, Tino, and Shanahan they know what the answer is.

Yeah, I'm not really sure where the negativity comes from in regards to TJ, or maybe the lack of confidence from some would be a better way to put it. He beat the defending national champ this year by two scores and played REALLY well in that game.

I thought he looked crazy fast in those two runs on Saturday night.

The bold he has in bunches.

Miller Moss anyone?

*gags*

I'm rolling with TJ baby. Anyone thinking we're going to simply get Kurtis Rourke out of the portal again is setting up for disappointment. A phenomenal football player and more likely than not a total anomaly. We'll see who else pops up in the portal, but my expectation will be to see TJ (or hey, maybe even Cherry) next fall until further notice. Let Tino and hopefully Shanahan cook during development season.

I think he has been good but in a previous post you mentioned he has been great this year.  I just don't see that yet.  He got a huge win vs Washington with was great but his stats that game were 11-19 for 124 yrds 1 TD, 1 Int.  Those are good but not great numbers.

Here are Rourke's stats before IU

Here are Tayven's

While Tayven's rate for '24 is strong his volume is low.  As you plan for next year and you had Rourke like options do you go after them as the starter or roll with Tayven?

Taylor at Bite-Sized Bison maintains a fairly accurate roster matrix, see below, that I compare notes with.  One of my big takeaways is that I wont be surprised if CCC and Staff load up on Sophomores/Juniors to balance classes given last year's defections.

This is where I am as well, I think the staff has to target adding a competent, experienced QB and let the room work itself out in Camp.  Not bringing in an experienced guy would be malpractice (see Michigan.)

Definitely hope they bring in a portal guy to compete for the quarterback job. Maybe TJ can be the guy, but I haven’t seen enough from him to feel comfortable riding with him as next year’s starter. He’ll be a senior with only 169 career attempts.

I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way, but we need an infusion of talent (higher stars) in the transfer portal and/or recruiting. I love the production over potential mantra, but in order to compete and conquer the Ohio St, Oregon, Alabama, and Georgia's of the college football world on a regular basis, we need a little boost.

I totally agree. While I like the current model of production, I would not mind if IU took a flyer on some big athletic 5 star talent type guys and try and coach them up. If IU is going to be a superpower, they’re gonna need guys who can handle OSU etc; specifically in the trenches.

I said he's been very good.

What do you mean Rourke like options?

From what we've seen from TJ this season, I struggle to see why some are auto-thinking he isn't the guy.

I think that's way easier said than done.

So... this is saying Stephens, Wedig, West, and Terry Jones all have eligibility left next year?

IU runs the RPO better than anyone in the nation because of Rourke. I think we’re going to be disappointed if you expect the same cerebral quarterback play next year.

I think IU is 1 game breaking RB or WR from Tayvon being a great quarterback. (Assuming the Online play is still good.), hopefully the NIL money is flowing in.

Maybe the one that's already spent a season in the season is the best option? Not sure. I have no issue bringing a portal in at QB, that's fine...

Are we going to have 5 QBs on scholly, though?
