2024 Hoosier Hysteria - Friday, October 18, 2024

Recommended Posts

I watched it back and while I think you can get a sense for some small things about the players, like a few of their tendencies, I don’t think a scrimmage with ourselves really tells us anything about how the team will do. I’m very eager to see them against UT on the 27th. Does Rice take control? Does Carlyle look totally different? Will Mgbako show more improvement on defense? We know Ballo is gonna be a beast. Just stay healthy big fella… though I will say, Hatton looked pretty good! Happy to have him on the roster.

I don’t know about that. It was a free-play scrimmage and some guys utilized timely cuts, spacing, PNR actions. We didn’t run any offense just general principles. Not a single play was ran. The movements were basic, some better than others.

I did not some boxing out on rebounds, that was encouraging.

I was encouraged that even though it was a scrimmage, guys were playing defense.

2024-2035 IU men thus far:

Increased pay for players.

Coach Woodson seems to be showing somewhat kind of accelerated aging.

Not sure how, in any way, that’s focused on Hoosier Hysteria or anything to do with IUBB.

Literally EVERY team has increased pay for players and a coach that is aging.

Because I'm that guy, here are the stats I totaled for the scrimmage.  Will need to hit threes at a better rate but was good to see us at least shooting them more.

FG FGA 3PT 3PTA FT FTA F R A ST BS TO PTS
1 Rice 2 3 1 1 0 0 0 2 2 0 0 1 5
2 Cupps 1 2 0 1 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 2
3 Leal 1 3 0 2 0 0 2 5 2 0 0 1 2
5 Reneau 2 4 0 0 2 2 0 4 3 0 0 1 6
8 Tucker 2 6 0 1 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 4
9 Carlyle 1 4 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2
10 Goode 2 9 2 6 0 0 1 5 1 1 0 1 6
11 Ballo 5 7 0 0 1 1 1 5 0 1 1 0 11
12 Hatton 3 6 0 0 2 2 2 4 1 0 0 1 8
21 Mgbako 4 9 2 5 2 2 0 0 1 0 0 0 12
  TOTALS 23 53 5 19 7 7 6 30 10 2 1 5 58

Thanks for posting this. I saw Ballo block at least 2 shots fwiw. Both 'teams' looked tight / not dialted in until it was 10-5 White team and then the energy level picked up. Shooting is there, imo, just need flow / more time gelling. Goode's shot is smooth but more of a set shooter.

Sitting back watching how the individual players moved within the plays, on and off-ball ball, from a pure scoring / offensive standpoint, I was most impressed with Tucker.

There are several on the team who will play professionally somewhere, imo, but Tucker is the most likely NBA player. He looks like a killer scorer out of the gate, should and I think will see good minutes, but that's going to turn on his D imo -- he may be a frosh, but he's very comfortable within the plays, from the time he was on the floor, no indication he was ever lost out there. Confidence very clear, dude has swag.

Ballo is the most dominant player on the team, hands down, played well outside and gets to the hole well, and the mini-hook and one-handed floater were nice weapons to see going along with his strength inside.

I thought Rice looked like the best overall player on the floor, though. He was playing a pure point role and still found scoring, a nice 3, had a couple really nice inside feeds, wasn't looking to find his, was playing setup man throughout, and as they play more together I think we'll go as deep as he can lead us.

Goode looks like the best pure outside shooter, though more a set shooter. Bako, once he finds his rhythm, looks like the guy who scores in bunches, and is sometimes quiet, not forcing it. He looks stronger, hope to see him more at the 4, and hope to see some sets with him and Tucker for more O.

And with a nod to Loaded Chicken Leal should see some time, looks like the vet that will bring stability and solid play when needed.

The meet and greet was very well organized. The players were all very nice. The best part was for 25 per ticket we got four of the big calendars signed and my kids got to see their heros and interact up close. Then we got color coded wrist bands that put us at court level seats. Two of the bands were different color than the rest which luckily I put on the 2 oldest girls and that put them right behind the women's bench for a even more upclose experience. If that happened to me when I was a kid it would probably still be the highlight of my life! Lol

Siap -- this from Woodson on Jakai (from Indy Star):

"He's doing fine. No, [Newton] can't go every day yet, and that's because we won't allow him to go every day," Woodson said Thursday. "We basically are slow-walking him back, but the days he's been out there have been pretty impressive.”

"He's probably the best explosive athlete on our team in terms of playing above the rim. It's scary how good he is in that regard, but we just gotta get him back fully healthy and he's not there yet."

And on Tucker:

“I gotta mention this guy because he’s the only freshman we have on our roster, but he doesn’t play like a freshman,” Woodson said. “I’m not trying to add pressure to him. He has a long way to go as a basketball player, but boy, I love everything about him. He’s really been good for me so far.”

One negative to this hoosier hysteria. I have been to several. I was worried about getting in before I bought the passes because of the football game and homecoming. We have a ranked team and alot to be excited about. Zero fans in balcony and bottom was mostly full but alot of empty seats. Thoughts on why this event was terribly attended with so many fans in town?

I was at only one where fans were turned away when we were number 1 when cody and Victor was there. But still most were better attended with much worse teams

The ones I attended used to be on Saturday and we used to wait in line for hours to get in because you could get a decent lower balcony seat and those events I would say there approximately 10,000 - 13,000 and they only thing you had to pay for were can goods and the Floating Head posters were free.  This event being on Friday makes it extremely hard for people like me to attend because I have around a 2-21/2 hour drive and I am not taking off wrk to attend HH.  Ever since MW has been the coach that’s when it was moved to Friday.  I say move it back to Saturday and many more will attend.

This one was free and canned goods were taken. I paid for the meet and greet. The free posters is a thing of the past I am afraid. I agree Saturday would be better but this was homecoming and the night before a massive football game with fox noon kickoff show their! The fans were there just didn't attend imo

I also second what you say. I have 4.5 hr drive and it’s just tough for us to get there on a Friday.
