The Case for Josh Schertz

@Truthhurts once again welcome to the board, and thank you for posting a great thread off the rip. 

 

I know very little about Schertz, but everything I have read has shown me he could be the guy. I would not be mad at all if we snagged him.

Schertz may very well have a successful career, but he's a bigger gamble at this point than Otzelberger. Aside from the fact he's already in the state, I'm not sure why you'd take the guy who's never coached above the mid-major level over the guy who has won big at Iowa State.

HOWEVER ... he has had exactly one game against a Power 5 team in his college career; at Michigan St earlier this year. To say the least, it did not go well for Avila at all; four fouls and five points trying to guard Mady Sissoko and Carson Cooper.

My hot take is that Robbie probably isn't going to be a big time "transfer up" candidate, which is great news if by some miracle Schertz sticks around. He's lethal at what he's good at, but he gets torched by athletic bigs. He had no answers against MSU. He didn't play against Bama and that might have helped ISU. Big thumper dude for Drake got into foul trouble Saturday so they subbed in a bouncier big off the bench and he gave Robbie problems. He's a blast to root for, a knockdown shooter, great passer, etc. but I'm not sure he's going to go start at a P6 and be doing what he's doing in the Valley.

Like I always say though, I'm not a talent evaluator.

If he lost 20 pounds of 'not muscle' and replaced it with 20 pounds of 'yes-muscle?' He could be a hell of a stretch five in a five out offense. He's so good at passing to cutters and pick and pop.

As of now? I'm not sure who he could guard in a big-boy game.

I know you made the case for Otzelberger in another thread somewhere. 

Not sure I would say he's already won big at Iowa State or that Iowa State is as hard of a place to win at as you suggested. Hasn't had a winning record in conference yet, and has won 2 tournament games it appears. Time at UNLV and SD St doesn't look all that impressive either. His 2022 turnaround was extremely impressive and he's kept it going (improving rank and conference record in 2023 and all 3 thus far in 2024). His predecessor had 3 years of equal/better results than he's had thus far so I don't consider IA St a tough place to win at IMO.

That's all totally fair. Again, though, I give Otzelberger the edge because he has won at the P5 level. Schertz hasn't.

337–69 at a DII school to me is more impressive than 57-32 in P5 to me.

Anyone that is pretty sure that May's or Schertz's record is a strong predictor of future success should take a look at the above listed record of Steve Prohm before and during his first P5 job:

Schertz on the other hand absolutely dominated for a decade+ at LMU and now has freaking Indiana State playing like a S16 team in just his third season there. Not to mention, again, he’s playing mathematically perfect basketball from a shot quality stand point. He’s the real deal. You absolutely want him over Dusty May, whose main qualification for the IU job is one deep march run and ties to Bloomington. 
 

 

 

May has had a winning season every year at FAU. They had 0 winning seasons before he got there in school history. So let's not diminish one of them to build up the other. They are both good candidates and good friends. They spend a few days with each other every off-season. I believe they're going to spend time in Terre Haute this summer.

Dusty May has no NIL budget but managed to retain all eight eligible rotation players off of his Final Four team. That includes Johnell Davis and Vlad Golden, who would have been six figure portal signees.

Def. don't want to devalue what Schertz has done at ISU. Seems like a rising star.

But to compare his three seasons at ISU to Dusty's first four at FAU isn't appropriate. One had the transfer portal to start, the other did not. Dusty built FAU from the ground up without any facilities, NIL, or having the ability to turn over a roster immediately. I understand there are no sure things in mid major coaches jumping to power conference, but what Dusty has done is next level impressive.

Haha agreed. Lived there for a year and am not in a hurry to go back. I think it is more about getting together with former Greene Co people like Matt Graves who is on the ISU staff.

Grew up there and am a proud Hautian however if Schertz convinced them to hang out in the Haute then go ahead a give him the job.  lol.    Biggest upset ever Terre Haute over Florida even if you are getting together with Greene co friends.   I’m sure they all can afford plane tickets.    New Casino might be making Terre Haute a hot  spot when it opens.   lol

Unless they're having a rendezvous at the Country Club, Idle Creek, or a secret Gibson clubhouse, I genuinely don't know where they'll hang out. Surely he won't take Dusty to the old ISU arena where the basketball offices are. Or maybe he thinks Dusty wants a good laugh.

Is 2 hours away considered to be in the greater area? Lol. But he'd have the money to stay there at least.
