Soon to RETIRE Coach Woodson Thread

I’m so confused on what we should do. I have nothing to ***** about now.

You aren’t necessarily heading into “retirement”.

If Dolson makes the wrong hire there will be an opportunity for a new thread with a record number of posts…..

Watching ESPN's "Gameday" ...

They're doing a short segment on Woody and IU. Before cutting to Pete Thamel, Rece Davis said: "And now, more from Pete Thamel -- who was the first to report that the sides were working on Woodson's retirement" -- or something along those lines (not Rece's exact quote).

Had to chuckle at that. Pete Thamel is light years behind everyone here. LOL!

I've missed about 100 pages, so sorry if this has already been debated to death, but nothing has really changed in terms of my stance on Stevens. I think it's an extreme long shot at best.

My info on Stevens is 4 years old, and people of course change, time changes things and circumstances change, but like I said I would be stunned if Stevens coaches in college again.

It was not close last time.

The one caveat I would grant people that think it's possible this time is the Celtics ownership situation. I don't know where that stands.

If Wyc ends up not selling or if Steve Pagliuca figures out how to purchase managing ownership then I think Stevens for sure stays, if it's someone else then who knows? Of course, the IU job will most likely be filled before the Celtics ownership situation is figured out.

I will be stunned if Stevens is the IU coach. But, I also would have been stunned if you told me Luka was getting traded a week ago.

Luckily for Steven’s his contract renewal comes up at the same time the IU job is open again. He can use it as leverage to get a nice new deal and IU can walk away thinking they were this close again.

Check out some of the replies. Several people  telling on themselves in a giant way. And I’m sure they’d tell you they’re good people. They really, really aren’t.

not that I'm a fan of DD... but there's some pretty epic replies in that tweet.

Yep. And the legacies of two Hoosier basketball legends -- Mike Woodson and Quinn Buckner -- are now very much tarnished.

In a way, it's almost kinda sad.

Maybe... but they were both grown men who walked into the situation... they both had to know how it would end... but Woodson made out like a bandit... $20M for his "legacy". And Buckner/Ferguson were the pimps.

I was able to read it, thanks. That is about as scorched earth as I would have ever expected from Doyel. Although, it is somewhat frustrating because it obviously shows what insiders have known (and we have postulated on) about his tenure that was not being reported to prevent loss of access (my guess). Pretty wild stuff.

Paywall block for me any new tidbits that hasn’t already been discussed? Please list thanks.

I don’t think I’d say new per se, but essentially a confirmation of everything we’ve been saying for over a year. Doesn’t recruit high schoolers, high school coaches in the state don’t like him, made the retirement stuff difficult, used the job as social club instead of working, etc. etc. More or less confirmed all the worst assumptions we’ve made. Also basically credits TJD for all the success, limited though it was. It convinced me the IU media has been covering this up and known he wasn’t doing anything to make IU better. One accusation was new to me that I haven’t bothered to substantiate was that he only did recruiting trips to places with good golf. Vegas, Phoenix, etc.

I don't remember any west coast recruits, the only times I remember the King going to see recruits regularly was IMG and Montverde in Florida.

Ballo, Rice, Kanaan?

Edit: Vegas and Arizona were the examples from the Doyle article that’s why I mentioned them. I don’t know if it’s actually true lol

Thanks!  It did work.  Everything spot on!  This whole thing spiraled out of control when he ignored Matta and fired Fife.  Woodson thought he was the smartest guy in the room and had all the answers.  Now I am not saying this would have worked even with Fife or Matta, but Woodson was never willing to give it a chance and now here we are.  Woodson is an idiot!

The best coaches (or CEO, or hamburger flippers, or whatever) surround themselves with smart people, change and adapt.  There was zero reason Woodson couldn't have come to IU, learned the college game, listened to guys like Matta and Fife, adapted his offense/defense schemes, and succeeded.  Except his stupid ego, which has him where he is at -- a failed coach and a ruined player legacy.

As you all probably know I was a huge fan of Woodson and my handle was Woodson 1980.My all-time favorite Hoosier ss a player.Without bad luck would have probably hung a banner.

I didn't really know much about his personality but now that I do it's tarnished that and I really can't look at him the same way.

Great player but a bad coach and apparently not so great person.
