IUBB vs. U of Indy (exhib) Sun., Oct. 29, 1:00, BTN+

Walker is what stood out to me the most from that game.

Think the length we have is going to have us playing defense at an elite level as the season goes on.

HAVE to shoot more threes.

Galloway had a rough game

Cupps looked more ready to play than I expected, him and Sparks are going to be fan favorites.

CJ has the right mindset but at times seems a little to juiced up and maybe a little strong on his shot.

If I had to choose one concern and one positive note from being at the game

-Concern: 3 point volume although I hope that was just because we knew we could get by them to the rim whenever

-Positive: The defense will be very very very good

My exact assessment as well. Very long and active defense

Now, if this was a UIndy forum, I'd comment on how impressive they were given they were picked as GLVC champion contenders and ranked in the NCAA Division II Top 20.  Plus, you gotta remember they did beat Tennessee on the road a few years ago.

But... We're the Indiana Hoosiers forum, so let's look at our guys, and that three point game is likely going to be a big problem this season if we keep hitting bricks like that.

X, Gallo, MM and Ware can all shoot 3’s. No reason for us to struggle there. Not saying we won’t have issues but we shouldn’t.

The ability to make them has not been our problem last year and won't be this year, volume will be what it comes down to. In the first half we were down by 2 points and we were 0-4 from 3 and they were 6-19. They missed 7 more 3s than we took but they had 18 points off of them.

I think we will take more 3s than we saw yesterday however. I won't worry about that until I see what we do the few games leading up to UCONN

The defense in the first half was lacking in effort at times and McKenzie lost his man more than a couple times He'll get better with the threat of the bench as a motivator. That's a luxury we have this season. The second unit out hustled them in my opinion. Woody had a little talk with the starters and they picked it up in the second.

The bench is really deep and that was without Banks who I expect to play a lot this season.

We should be taking at least 15 a game.

This is the point -- it's not our shooting percentage from outside, we have players that can hit well from outside and looking at one exhibition game to think otherwise is pointless -- it's a question of volume.

The staff's recruiting included outside shooting and Bako absolutely can shoot, along with X and Gallo and Cups. Last season we once again shot by volume at the bottom of the B1G. That has to change for the team to be what it can be, and we're assuming what the staff is saying, and recruiting for, means we'll see that spread O with more outside shooting.

Can't take too much away from 1 exhibition. But yes, we absolutely should be shooting more, a good 15 a game, that spreads the floor.

It was nice seeing Leal get so much fun. He is looking a lot leaner this season than the past 3. Looks like a legitimate 2 guard and looked faster and more explosive.

I don't want to get negative about Anthony Leal on the open board, who is by all accounts an asset to the program, and I know you're a fan, but really?!!?

I would even say 18-20. While I think our frontcourt is very good, none of them are the auto bucket inside that trayce was so I am more than happy to move those shots to behind the arc

We should take a bunch. However, for sustained success, the team also has to be trained to take the best shots available. Against U Indy or Marion those shots are different that against B1G teams.

We have plenty of guys that have to be accounted for from the 3 point line; X, Gabe, Gallo, MM, Ware, Gunn, maybe Banks. However, it seems that only MM and Gunn will be volume 3 point shooters; similar to last year when only Kopp and Bates were volume guys. We do seem to have more guys that have the ability to make threes than we did last year.

He's not looked exactly like a D1 athlete years 1-3. Yesterday he looked more so like one. Maybe it was the different hair. But he definitely looked different and looked to fit in moreso yesterday than he had the last 3 years.

Let's agree to disagree. Unless you're strictly talking about the hair - that is D1 quality.

Is it bad that after one exhibition,(at home, vs a D2 program) I already trust Cupps more than XJ? Not saying he's "better" simply that he seems more under control and intentional.

As many others mentioned, Sparks & Walker both looked very good. I am not terribly upset about the 1st half performance...yet. If they show a propensity for slow/sloppy starts though....ugh. You can see potential for a lot of other guys (Ware & Mbako) although in that very brief sample, MM doesn't strike me as a one & done. Then again, I have a very low opinion of the NBA.

Missed FT's are a concern, since that should be automatic. I won't have my mind changed about this. Missing FT's is a character flaw. NO ONE should shoot under 70%, doing so means you are stupid, lazy and likely ugly. Also means you probably camp in the left lane going 5mph under the limit and have bad personal hygiene. Shooting  under 70% FT for the season should get tattooed on your forehead, cost you your scholarship and result in a year in prison. In conclusion, I don't appreciate poor FT shooting.

I like Cupps too but he picked up his dribble at least 3 times when he shouldn't have. Probably freshman mistakes and it didn't hurt as others came to him to help. I expect him to improve as the season progresses.

Leal playing over 8mpg is a very bad sign for IU. Far better than the days of starting McRoberts, basically played 4v5 on Offense

Question…. What is the report on Sparks after he went down yesterday?

Observation….. Sure miss Chuck Crabb’s voice. Just didn’t seem right.

Post-game Woody said no big deal and would expect to pay against Marian.  BUT, today I've seen reports he is on crutches and the dreaded 4-letter word --  boot.
