Pick Your 5

Because we are all excited about the '24 class and it's summer with not as much to talk about, I thought I'd do a fun topic. Let's say you are on staff. Which 5 '24 recruits would make your ideal class?  Keep in mind the current players on the roster and the ability to add in the portal. I'll start with my 5: Liam, Boogie, Queen, Betsey, Caleb Williams

Liam, Boogie, and Queen are day 1 starters. Queen I think is a multi-year player. Boogie and Liam very well could be one and dones. They very well could be multi-year players. It'll be interesting to see how they continue to develop. Tyler Betsey I think is a kid that could have a limited role as a freshman (similar to Malik..different positions/type of player) then start as a sophomore. He feels like a 3-4 year player. Add in someone like Caleb Williams as a developmental prospect. Someone who won't play as much as a freshman. 

Overall I'd like to have 2-3 guys make a major impact in their freshman year. (Ex: Jalen, Romeo, Cody, Eric Gordon). Maybe 1-2 of them stick around for another year or two. Add in 1-2 guys that are rotational pieces as freshman and can start as a sophomore (Ex: OG, Malik). Add in a developmental guy that later contributes (Ex: Hartman, Juwan, hopefully Kaleb). 

As for the current guys;..I'm really high on Cupps/Newton and think they could be your starting backcourt in a few years. Just depends on Jakai's health. Also think Malik as a junior could be All-American good. Add in shopping for vets in the portal...

One thing I'll warn everyone on. I don't think you win with starting all freshman. I still think you need veteran players. I don't mind IU landing Queen, Liam, and Boogie. I just hope at least two of them are multi-year guys.

I think one of Harper/Boogie with Mustaf is realistic. Swartz and Betsey would be awesome. Guys who won't start right away but be rotational pieces that hopefully develop into starters.

In terms of wishlist?

1. Bidunga and if not Bidunga , Deri Queen but not necessarily #1.

2. McNeeley- get him. If not Newell or Betsey but I like McNeeley best

3. I love our Guard targets. (1. Harper 2. Fland 3. Edgecomb 4. Mustaf 5. Perry 6 Scwartz 7 Givens.


I mean how Greedy can I be?

Fland, Harper, Edgecomb, McNeely, Bidunga

Especially if we get 1 more year of Reneau at the 4.

I mean, I’ll be honest any 2 of the 7 guards I listed makes me happy. Bidunga/Queen are home runs. Newell/Betsey/McNeeley are home runs.

Realistically I think we take 4 , 2 guards, 1 wing, 1 big.

Would sub Edgecombe for Passmore and/or Bidunga for Queen if I thought either was remotely likely. But, among the reasonable candidates this would be my list fairly easily.

I'm going to answer the question that was posed. So ... not the most achievable class for '24, but the ideal class:

1. Dylan Harper - a no-brainer for me as the top/best player that we are recruiting
2. Flory Bidunga
3. Liam McNeely
4. Boogie Fland
5. Asa Newell

And as good as they are, two or three of those five wouldn't start. It's not realistic that we could get all five, but we are squarely in the running with all of them (okay, maybe less so with Flory) and that's my order of 'ideal-ness'.

Got it. He's seemed pretty into it courtside, and from what I've seen (limited) Woodson and staff have been pursuing him well -- hope it bears fruit.

And with a fifth year Gallo, Payton Sparks, Gabe Cupps, Malik Reneau, and hopefully CJ Gunn and Jakai Newton setting the tone in the locker room. 

Good times ahead? Seems overwhelmingly likely.
