IU football has made significant strides over the years.

1893 football 1 win 4 losses and 1 tie

 IU   54         Opponents 184

including win over Danville Athletic Club 18-0.

Things were kept in a little more perspective back then regarding football and sports.

Walk-on RB Brett Wethington is in the portal.

There are walkons in the portal?  I'm struggling to understand that.  Is he hoping to get a scholarship somewhere? Can't he just walk off and walk on somewhere else?

I assume it's just a way to get noticed, probably looking for the smaller school scholarships they turned down initially? They definitely aren't getting a scholarship anywhere else. I bet most of these types end up nowhere or a non NCAA school.

Don’t know for sure if they have to be in the portal as a walk-on, but it makes it easier for everyone.

There are official numbers out there somewhere, but a major percentage of portal entries are walk-ons.

We finished the season ranked 90th out of 131 FBS programs according to CBS sports

Wonder how may P5 schools were below us?

I'd imagine Colorado was. Stanford, Iowa State, BC and Virginia Tech were pretty bad this year, too.

Yes to all questions. I look at it as if it's a declaration to college football coaches not in Btown saying I'm available now if you're interested. For folks like Wethington and Spegal they now have a FBS resume and might be able to land a FBS scholarship somewhere. Both of them had FCS offers out of high school and I'd imagine they could probably make a few phone calls to Valpo and ISU if they wanted to. But making it public that they're in the portal just allows them to test the waters for potential bites elsewhere.

I think he and Barner are making mistakes.

If Dasan is getting sold on the Isaiah Simmons roll, I get it. He doesn't have anywhere close to the foot speed Simmons has though.

Not sure on Barner. I think he can go somewhere that will actually get him the ball and make a splash. Sanguinetti is solid, but yeah I don’t see him landing in a much better spot than he had here. He has too much film for someone to go star-chasing from his HS days. Pretty sure he was a 5-star at one point early on.

Simmons was as freaky as a freak can get lol. That role makes sense for Dasan, but agree even as good as he is, he’s a very poor man’s Simmons physically.
