Lineup Changes?

Galloway is hitting 23% from 3-point range. He can't shoot really from anywhere and his drives to the basket have become predictable. Just like last season, teams are figuring out how to guard him. Yes, Galloway brings energy which is a good quality for a player who comes off the bench. If Bates would ever start playing at his potential, he would be the best candidate to move up because (potentially anyway) he can hit from the outside and drive to the basket.

It's not just the shooting though. Kopp lacks defensively, handling the ball, and rebounding. He's given us almost 1 three point make a game in Big 1.o play and some spacing so we can attack in an outdated manner.

If Phin, Lander, Bates, whatever player you want to toss in would play to their potential we would have options. What we're doing now isn't giving ourselves the best chance to win because we are more often than not playing from behind after the first 8 minutes of each half. I'm not a coach but that seems like a recipe for not succeeding.

We're what, -47 in the past 7 or so games early 1st and 2nd halves? I don't have that stat but it's something like that.

I don't understand not seeing that we repeatedly start slow, usually both halves, and get down, because we have not one but two guys who are just not strong defenders, who are out there to shoot 3's, but still are not shooting them -- we're again shooting the 3 by numbers towards the bottom of the B1G. Having 3-point shooters together on the floor doesn't help when they're not shooting.

Then also not seeing that both Galloway and Geronimo are among our top players in conference both defensively and offensively, by the numbers (see the stats in the GG thread, they're pretty clear). And Galloway assists by the numbers, per minute, right there with X and Phin.

When they come in we tend to get back into the game, from the hole that the same starting group repeatedly creates. There's really  no good reason not to insert one of them into the starting group, imo.

A little NBA lineup example, Clippers -- Largest comeback W since 2009, down 66-31 with about a min in 1st half.

Down 66-36 at halftime, Clippers coach Ty Lue opened the third quarter with several of his starters on the bench. Lue didn't play starters Jackson, Nicolas Batum and Ivica Zubac in the second half, opting to go with guys such as Amir Coffey (29 points), Kennard (25 points) and Terance Mann (16 points).

And that worked. They're erased a deficit of 24 or more points 3 times this season. The lineup is not etched in stone, the coach inserts players, as needed, when a lineup isn't clicking.

The reason why Stewart and Kopp aren't shooting more from 3-point ranger is the offensive scheme. IU doesn't run plays for them except at the end of game when IU is playing catch-up. Stewart is hitting 45% and Kopp is hitting 37%. They need to shoot more but the offense is geared toward getting the ball into the paint. Woodson's offensive scheme is almost as bad as Archie Miller's. It's one-on-one basketball. The difference this year is that TJD and Race Thompson are playing better and Xavier Johnson is a better point  guard than Phinisee. But in general the offense is stagnant.

Woody is an NBA guy -- he fully understands and has experience with changing his lineups, including the starting lineup.

Hell, Woody's mentor RMK changed the starting lineup about as often as he changed his socks. In RMK's last five seasons at IU, the number of different scholly players with at least one start was:

  • 1999-2000 -- ten
  • 1998-1999 -- ten
  • 1997-1998 -- ten
  • 1996-1997 -- eleven
  • 1995-1996 -- nine
  • 1987 Champs -- eleven
  • 1981 Champs -- ten

So far this year for Woody? -- six

This WILL change.

Let the record state that I, for one, have changed my socks more than eleven times this season.

Seriously? Every team starts 5 guys. So Woody has changed the lineup, what? Once? And why did he do that? Because one of his starters got in trouble, not due to poor play or someone else deserving the minutes more

he has stuck to the same awful starting unit all season despite the numbers showing that it is an awful unit. They are a negative and 8th best unit he has trotted out.

how does that make any sense?

I don’t know what one has to do to be stripped of their honorary internet coaching expertise badge…but arguing to change the offense so your all American post player doesn’t touch it in favor of two transfers who have to have their feet set to make a shot ought to do it.

I believe you'll have to find what honorary internet coaching expertise badge skool he went to then request that they strip it.

Yes, arguing to diversify the offense is a horrible idea when your AA post player was getting double teamed and we weren't getting the ball out of the post quick enough. Also, it's horrible when we actually ran stuff for P Stew to get open looks and he made them. I'm sure another honorary internet coaching expertise badge wearing member could come up with something off of that to get that AA some easier looks than just dumping it into him and everyone else standing around.

If you think we’re playing 1-on-1 “Archie ball,” you’re beyond help.

We have one of the best post players in the country no decent coach would do anything but play through him.

Who is suggesting he shouldn’t get his touches?

he should but his teammates should be moving to get open for a 3 or slashing to the hoop. Majority of the time they do neither - they all stand like statues

1) read, it'll help you understand. He didn't state anywhere that it is 1-on-1 "Archie ball" 2) We do go stagnant too often on offense. It's bad enough that the coaches have even talked about it. Gasp (!!) (those are the actual coaches not the honorary internet coaches)

Yes, that's great. We do have a great post player, debatable where he ranks but he's definitely toward the top. Nobody has stated to stop playing through him. Again, read. When the ball goes into the post and the other four players stand it typically doesn't go well. That is what people have been stating over and over and over again.

I'm still pretty meh on Kopp as a starter....

That's about it... Either get him more 3 attempts, or reduce his minutes. His FT% is great, which I love, but he doesn't get fouled enough for that to matter. He's poor to mediocre in every other stat category aside from 3pt and FT...
