Candidate Thread: Chris Beard (Texas Tech)

Recommended Posts

If I were a betting man I’d put money down Beard is announced within 72 hours of TT being eliminated. I highly doubt Dolson and company have only been talking to Stevens over the past month. The way Beard spoke about Assembly Hall, the connection to Knight, and his “I don’t talk about other jobs” answer when asked about IU I think would have all been considered serious smoke had we not been chasing Brad so feverishly. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s my gut.
You got it. Had people not been so enthralled with the Stevens stuff these 2 examples would have been dissected to death

Surprised there hasn’t been more talk in here. Beard is a legit home run candidate and it seems like we have a real shot at him

If they lose tomorrow, I expect this thread to get some serious traffic. (Along with Musselman’s)

Not entirely sold on him but he seems like an awesome guy. He just screams Texas to me and in this doc (Goodman runs it, sorry) his kids are going to be a HUGE factor in whether or not he leaves that state - or returns whenever the UT job opens up.

It’s a weird spot to be in watching these guys. Wanting them to lose but at the same time not wanting to hear people talk about how “tHeY lOsT iN tHe SeCoNd RoUnD”. I like both Muss and Beard, but give the slight edge to beard

I have a personal rule:

“Anyone worth interacting with on a message board can look past one single elimination tournament game and see a candidate’s full body of work.”

That would be incredible, and IMO it’s not “your gut” your logic holds well and it’s an opinion based on some real circumstantial evidence.

If you are talking about his daughters from his previous marriage, the one is in college and the other is either a junior or senior in high school. Family may be a factor but I really don’t think that would be the determining factor.

I really want Beard. I think he’s almost a perfect fit at IU and would be great if we could snag him.

He literally checks all the boxes to me. He may not be an IU guy, but he’s a RMK guy so that should be enough to satisfy that portion of the fan base that can’t let that go.

Ah. I thought they were much younger than that.

Yeah, he is. Great defensive coach. Not good, great. Crazy about how disciplined they are in execution. Scott Drew has flat stolen all the little things that Beard has tweaked with his no middle concepts. Bold faced stole’em. Not super fond of his pace of play,  but he does create looks without being completely dependent on 3’s. Given the roster he might have here next year, that’s a good thing, and I think he has a chance to win even when the talent is down a little. So he can be a consistent winner. I’m an unabashed fan.

I understand that Kenpom has its limitations, but Beard's team's rankings on both sides of the ball have been really impressive and speak to what @Demo is saying about him being an elite defensive coach:

2021:  Offense-31 Defense-18

2020:  Offense-47 Defense-9

2019: Offense-25 Defense-1

2018: Offense-50 Defense-4

I'm still not sold on Beard but the needle is moving.

I’m not sold either but I do like his personality. He’s a big personality that I think would thrive at IU. The fans would love it. The Knight connection is great too.

Y’all need to watch this video. Three Pat Knight references in 20 minutes and a big sign in his ‘war room’ that reads “The mental is to the physical as 4 is to 1”
