General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

IU was only paying 3.5 of the 7 million a year contract. Mr. Pfau was paying the other 3.5. Just like he’s paying the majority of the new football coaches salary.
Maybe he will pay 3.5 so we can get Drew or pearl.

If you can believe what I say, there have been talks starting about how we’re going to pay the salary of the next coach.

Is that coach playing right now in your opinion?  You do not have to answer that lol.

@Chris007

and for the record, Danny Ainge didn’t “retire” as some plan to name Brad Stevens his successor. He was forced out by the organization and allowed to “retire” to save face. He literally took the same position with the Jazz three months later.

I’ll ask some people about that but I can ensure you, Danny is quite happy to be back home in Provo.

I was very young. I really have no memories of IU basketball before the 2002 tourney run. But looking back? Pitino should have been hired in 2001. Without any question. He would have won multiple titles at Indiana.

I’m so old I had a buddy text me that Pitino was at Assembly Hall in 2001. I didn’t believe him so I drove across campus to see for myself and there he was.

I’m sure he is, but nobody actually “retires” just to take the same position at a different organization. Just like Belichick and the Patriots didn’t “mutually agree” to part ways. But Kraft owes one and then some to Bill.

I have not heard specifically one name. But Dusty has been mentioned along with others but more about how we’re going to come up with the money. Some boosters are not happy but are they willing to put up their own money.

Man I thought we were friends but you haven’t had my back one time tonight. I’m getting a new partner for the next coaching search.

Meh, maybe.. He’s a big figure in the Mormon church and his home of BYU. Personally, I think he wanted to be closer to “home” and why not do the same thing 45 minutes away in Salt Lake?

Nonetheless, it was shocking indeed.

And we instead kept Davis. They knew Pitino would put IU basketball back into the upper echelon of college basketball. They didn't want that.

Chris, I’m your right hand man when it comes to coaching searches. I’m ready to track a damn plane again. The football search has given me the “itch” again.

You are probably correct. The story the athletic department told was that Pitino’s wife didn’t think Bloomington was big enough & wanted to be closer to an airport. But that could have been a spin.

True but we also could have hired beilein instead of Sampson also. Just poor decision after poor decision.

I’d assume so since Stevens hand picked successor ended up banging the wife of Danny’s friend and about blew up the entire front office.  Lol…

That’s low-key the biggest f-up that was a realistic sliding doors moment. Beilen at IU would’ve been loved and arguably more successful than at UM. Hell, swap Zeller for McGary and Beilen probably has a title.

I'm 100% sure that the Dusty May to Scott Dolson communication pipeline is well established. Dusty May's top assistant Todd Abernethy: "C'mon Dusty! Make it happen!!" and ... "C'mon dad! Make it happen!!"

Tom Abernethy - Indiana University IU Hoosiers Basketball History

Men's Basketball Adds Todd Abernethy as an Assistant Coach - Florida Atlantic University Athletics

When assistant coach Todd Abernethy is watching his Florida Atlantic University Owls go through their pre-game paces and hears the word “Hickory” from the distance, he knows his father is in the arena.

The man is just not any dad. He is Tom Abernethy, South Bend native and starting forward for the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers, college basketball’s last undefeated men’s champions. “Hickory,” as in the Hickory Huskers of "Hoosiers" movie fame, is the predetermined code that father and son have worked out to announce his presence.

Dad tries to catch as many FAU games as he can, and why not?

Thats so cool.
