NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

Notre Dame G J.J. Starling hits the portal. Former 5 star 2022 recruit. 6'4" 11ppg, 2.8 reb, 1.1 ast, 1.5 TO, 42% FG, 29.9% 3PT

It would not surprise me if there is IUBB interest here.

Look past the numbers -- this kid played a lot of minutes as a freshman on a team with pretty much no other shot-makers. He had to create and take a lot of tough shots with no big like Trayce to attract attention away from him. He did fade badly down the stretch of the season -- clearly got frustrated and was unhappy at the end of the year.

However, very talented/dynamic and very high quality kid/academics. Was a Notre Dame, Stanford, Northwestern decision the first time around.

I only say this because I believe some of the past transfers in the past have caused chemistry issues. Chemistry issues typically linger and that it could lead other players to develop the wrong mindset (maybe the freshman). I’m not saying no to getting a bunch of transfers, I just want it to be the right fit.  Our women’s team is how I want the men to pursue these kids.  Everyone of their transfers were all on board from the get go and all know their rolls.

I trust the current staff. They've shown they are willing to give kids a chance but will cut ties when necessary. At the end of the day you kind of have to because chemistry can be just as much of an issue with incoming freshman as transfers so they're going to be making those decisions regardless. In some ways, I can see it being a little easier knowing what to expect with a transfer that has already played a year or more of college ball. I'm also not too worried about anyone corrupting freshman like Newton and especially Cupps.

100%.

The staff (and every staff) clearly weighs chemistry in making these decisions. Hence, Chris Ledlum from Harvard is apparently the first player we're pursuing. It also explains why the first three portal guys under Woody have been Kopp (who just won the conference sportsmanship award), and Xavier and Parker Stewart (who Kenya Hunter had close pre-existing relationships with).

Doesn't mean we'll always get it right, but it's a clear priority element in the formula.

Stewart was a Miller addition.  He was also one that seemed to cause chemistry issues. Unlike Kopp and Xavier (although Xavier has made questionable decisions off the court). Durr was another Woodson addition.

Good points, except......he won't have a big like TJD to attract attention at IU either!

I agree with Wayne that as the projected roster looks now, getting the highest level 5 is top priority. Obviously not gonna find a true TJD replacement, but that is the biggest hole on the team. Assuming Duncomb bolts, that leaves only Reneau- a little undersized and foul prone- who is a better fit at the 4, IMO.

I think a couple of competent bigs and a shooter should keep IU competitive.  Of course, maybe Woodson has just been adapting to TJD and will roll out a 4 guard line-up next year with Geronimo as the post.

Unless Maliks outside shot becomes a bigger part of his game, I cannot say I want to see him getting mins at that spot, again, moving forward.

Already received crystal ball from Eric Bossi to Syracuse. Guessing since he is from NY but hope we go after him.

I imagine Syracuse fans are grasping for anything positive these days.

Would make sense ... Syracuse will have program continuity by naming Adrian Autry to the job. And then there's this:

During an April 2021 conversation with a Syracuse.com reporter, Starling talked about his friendship with Trey Autry and his close relationship with Adrian Autry as factors in his Syracuse interest. “That’s a great school. Great people. Been close to them forever,” he said. “Coach Autry, Trey, that’s like family, that’s like my brother. We’ve been close since third grade. Met at a basketball camp at Syracuse. And then we played AAU against each other and with each other, so yeah, Syracuse is always going to be on my mind.”

Probably just likes the idea of standing there defensively in a 2-3 zone. Fun stuff that would be. Eye roll

Eddie Lampkin, 6'11", 263 lb. sophomore forward from TCU.  22 minutes per game, 6.3 points, 5.9 rebounds.  Purely a post player.

Mike Mitchell, 6'2" sophomore point guard from Pepperdine.  34 mpg, 11.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 5.0 apg.  Excellent shooter -- 73 of 166 from three this season (44%), 56 of 140 (40%) as a true freshman.

Reading up on the Eddie Lampkin one.  This appears to be an ugly exit.  Lampkin did not travel with TCU to the Big 12 tournament -- team stated that it was for personnel reasons.  Lampkin alleging coach Jamie Dixon of mistreatment and racial remarks.  Lampkin's mother has posted texts now of TCU leaking Lampkin's going into the transfer portal prior to him reaching that decision and TCU doing so without him informing them of any decision.

I guess that's one way to tell a player he's not welcome back next year. Just put his name in the portal.

"Although he had NIL money exceeding six figures, according to sources his priority was more NIL deals. And he was not happy about playing time.

It was hard to justify that much more playing time for a player who stopped working, and acted as if he was better than his production. He is talented.

He isn’t talented enough to be lazy."

Ouch. They did also say some good things about him so I don't think it was just a hit piece. Sounds like a "pass" to me.

He's big and he's talented. He also played most of the season on a bad ankle.

This is one of those where he'll need to have a personal relationship with a staff that knows his character. Sorta like Xavier Johnson at IU, who when it's all said and done, has been a talented player whose character has been very much rehabilitated at IU.

Here is an account of what Lumpkin posted on instagram of a text conversation with an assistant coach as well as a text conversation his mother had with Dixon.  It does only show their side of the story, FWIW.

Lumpkin's text is a very rambling one.  Would say he's not in a right state of mind at this point and mentions at the end wanting to kill himself.

Edit:  found what was missing from the tweet, which was the text that Lumpkin's mother received from Dixon prior to her response.  It stated:

“Vanessa thank you (for) taking the time to speak with us yesterday,” the text reads. “I am sorry that I was not able to get Eddie to reach the levels we had both hoped for. I understand that Eddie is entering the transfer portal … Wish him all the success. The first day for NCAA transfer portal is Monday March 13. We will expedite immediately. If there is anything we can do please let me know. Coach Dixon.”

Alleging mistreatment and racial remarks towards Lampkin, that would be a bad look if true.
