Jury is still out for me. Non-conference schedule isn’t all that strong this year in my opinion. We look really good at times, but we seem to struggle capitalizing on our scoring opportunities. Quote

B1G is gonna be a hell of a test. It’s a great team though. Quite a bit better than last season imo. Palmer Ault is a big loss but I think we are better in all phases. We looked out of sorts for much of that Louisville game on the road. That was concerning. If that level of play becomes the standard I’ll worry then but we have talent, speed, experience, with the addition of a plus goalie. No reason not to dream with this team. Quote

Aaron Posted September 12 Posted September 12 8 hours ago, BtownStrength said: Professional level save. Mroz is a difference maker and is a big reason why we can make a run. For sure. Goalkeeping is so much better from him and D in general this year is vastly improved and that save was exactly what team was not getting last year in big moments. The only time Indiana had goalkeeping that was as bad as in 2025 was in 2013 and 2019 to begin year with veterans Michael Soderlund and Sean Caulfield respectively. Fortunately in those two seasons Colin Web and Roman Celentano were young freshmen waiting in the wings and Yeagley was able to make change to them midseason and things improved by leaps and bounds and both became elite guys in net throughout their career. Unfortunately last year when veteran Holden Brown was struggling in job, IU went to their projected young hot shot again in Judewellin Michel and the switch didn't work and he was just as bad and for first time in Yeagley's tenure he had no good answers between pipes. That's why he went and got Mroz in portal. Interestingly Michel seems to have gotten a lot better as Wiscy's goalkeeper this year but Yeagley took no chances and wouldn't give him the job so he transferred. In retrospect either choice would have worked for the Hoosiers seemingly, but I don't blame Yeagley for hitting the portal and its tough when every goalie had shined as freshman in past here and Michel did not. Generally goalies play well here from the word go as freshmen and give you 3-4 years of elite play in net starting with TJ Hanning as a freshman in 1997 which is when I began watching. If you look at the run of guys since its been almost all hits: 1. TJ Hannig 1997-01, Championship level goalie from start who won two national titles 2. Jay Nolly, 02-05, Championship level goalie from start who won two national titles 3. Chay Cain 06-08, Solid goalie who could have been better if anyone but Mike Freitag was coaching him 4. Luis Soffner 09-12, Almost ruined by Freitag but Yeagley got him to his potential last couple of years and got team a national title in last hurrah 5. Colin Webb 13-16, This is where IU went with Soderlund who was Soffner's backup only to bench him midseason after worst goals against average in school history for Webb which saved NCAA Tourney streak that remains to this day and then had solid four year career despite being smaller than ideal 6. Trey Muse 17-18, Best goalie Hoosiers have had since Nolly to this day and a tragedy he didn't raise final hardware after leading IU to back to back College Cups as top ranked team in country throughout his tenure allowing 20 goals TOTAL in two years before going pro with 38-4-7 record 7. Roman Celentano 19-21, Only guy who comes very close to Muse and came in mid 2019 after Muse's backup Caulfield was benched and again a tragedy Celentano didn't get that final hardware for IU getting the team to College Cup and now a high level pro who is fringe guy always for USMNT 8. JT Harms 22-24, Like Webb was smaller than ideal and became an issue in PK shootouts that lost IU a national title in 22 and Elite 8 in 23 after Muse and Celentano excelled here but still a really solid career who led Hoosiers on deep runs in December 9. Holden Brown 25, This is where luck ran out as the last guy's backup again struggled but this time the young hotshot in Michel was not ready and for first time in history Hoosiers had no good choices in net, hence why Mroz is here and appears to be at least a decent answer but ceiling still being written and last season was first time since 2013 Hoosiers gave up way more then about a goal a game on avg at worst Class of '66 Old Fart, WayneFleekHoosier, BtownStrength and 1 other 4 Quote

Aaron Posted September 19 Posted September 19 1-0 WIN against an elite Washington offense that keeps the game on skates all night with elite speed and scoring ability. Was waiting to see if this defense is for real and tonight showed they are. Also, every IU player and fan is so glad Charlie Kosakoff is in MLS and not on Huskies anymore as he has been the Hoosiers kryptonite like no other for three years and costs them wins or draws each season recently with late goals. His replacement is barely a drop off but fortunately kept him from finding the back of the net. As for this D, Mroz is FINALLY a goalie in the mold of Celentano and Muse who has the combination of size and good instinct to make tough saves. Like in 2016-2020, it is going to be real hard to score on this team and will be close if they let up more than dozen or so goals in 2026. McHenry, Barger, Maher, and Kinsella finally give you an organized back line of steel and then to score opposition has to get by them AND Mroz if they make a mistake which is really hard. For the first time since 2020 I can say almost unequivocally this is a championship level backline and that no. 2 ranking is not a paper ranking. Def should be a top five squad all year and very few teams are better and most are in Big Ten. The key is going to be to get that top four seed so you can play all NCAA Tourney games in Bloomington pre-College Cup. Now my one concern in this offense. Njike is a different kind of forward with elite ball skills and dribbling who can set others up and score. While this is a great dynamic IU has lacked in their striker in past, it makes me nervous when you don't have a bona fide pure scorer who can put the ball in the net at any point like Toye, Rennicks, or Bezerra during that late 2010's run or Ault last year. Might need to win a lot of 1-0 games this year and this team can certainly do it. Just wish we had that pure scorer up top who can create for themselves with pure speed. Then would feel really good that this team would getting its ninth star like 2017 and 2018 where it was 10/10 as best in country. This time its more 8/10 unless someone becomes a sure goal threat. Bogard, Njike, Moller-Jensen, and Oduro can all score and have different traits to do so, but none dominant which makes it slightly more difficult but not impossible to hang a banner with this backline. American HoosierX Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Well I was wrong, South Carolina jumped us from #4 to #1 and we stayed at #2. It's a bit strange that all 8 coaches have the first 16 teams ranked exactly the same. I feel like there isn't whole lot of rigor that goes into this. https://unitedsoccercoaches.org/rankings/college-rankings/ncaa-di-men/ Quote
