Class of '66 Old Fart Posted May 2 Posted May 2 In a game played at Wrigley Field, our Hoosiers took the weekend opener 9-2. Neubeck started and pitched 6 innings of 4-hit shutout ball. Vogel and Rivera closed it out limiting the Wildcats to 3 hits and 2 runs. We had 11 hits in thegame. Denny went 3-5 and Hanley 3-4. ten Oever who's been on a real tear was 2-3 and led the way with 3 RBI. Decker 2-4 with 2 RBI. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Wildcats take today's game 7-4 despite the fact we outhit them 11-5. Unfortunately, 1 of their 5 was a 3-RBI double and another a 2-4 run HR. Thomas and Yarberry split mound duties this afternoon for IU. Denny went 4-4 but not a one of his 4 hits scored a run. Malamazian was our RBI leader with 2. Rubber game tomorrow at 2:00 ET. Quote

Class of '66 Old Fart Posted May 3 Posted May 3 And Northwestern wins the weekend series winning 9-6 today. Both teams scored a run in the first inning but NW scored 5 in its second and we had to play catch up from there and despite scoring 3 in our 8th we couldn't complete a comeback. NW had 12 hits (4-HR) off 4 IU pitchers plus we issued 8 BB. We could manage just 6 hits.; Hanley had 3 RBI. To add insult to injury -- our first series loss at Northwestern since 2006. Next weekend we play at PUke and the following weekend is the regular season finale (mercifully) hosting Illinois. Quote
Hardwood83 Posted May 4 Posted May 4 I've mostly ignored the baseball team the last couple of seasons. Any chance IU makes a coaching move now, or are we in for another forgetable season next year? Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted May 4 Posted May 4 (edited) This season was over almost immediately. That stinks the worst because I’ll usually tune in a watch some games if we are near tournament worthy. This team was immediately not that despite preseason rankings indicating we’d be close. I don’t pretend to know what the right move is for Indiana baseball in this case, but it feels like a change is needed. Edited May 4 by WayneFleekHoosier Quote

I have seen conflicting info here. Some sources say his deal expires now in 2026 and others have him getting a five yr extension in 2023 after that 43 win season which was the one good one post-Covid. Either way, whether he has two years left on his contract or is done after this, he certainly could be let go after a spring like this as trying to recruit with only a couple seasons left on a deal as program trends down is not easy. Not 100% sure, but I think his extension was only a 3-year extension. His original contract, signed in 2018, was for 5 years. So if that is accurate, this would be the last year. Aaron 1 Quote

BtownStrength Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Mercer was able to hold it together the last few years but its been a slow descent, with the wheels finally coming off this year. Hoping for a few miracles this weekend but not holding my breath. Gahoosierfan 1 Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted May 5 Posted May 5 14th out of 18th or 17th or whatever in the B1G. I think we were projected in the top 5. Been a bad season for sure. Always curious what a rebuild looks like or if guys would stay. We seem to have some talent that would be nice to retain. I guess either way, probably time for a new direction, sadly, because I wanted him to succeed. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted May 7 Posted May 7 We really need our Hoosiers (21-27) (7-17) to put it all together this weekend on the road at PUke (32-15) (15-9). All 3 games televised on B1G+. Fri - 6:00 Sat - 2:00 Sun - 1:00 Preview Radio Live Stats Quote

TheWatShot Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Lost at Purdue tonight after being up 9-2 in the 7th inning. Mercer can't be gone soon enough. Quote
cbp4iu Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Tonight has to be the final straw. No shot Mercer is back. Time to move on and get literally anyone. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Last night the perfect example of how this season has gone. We led 8-2 after 4 complete. It's 9-2 after 6 complete and Neubeck had pitched 6 innings of 4-hit ball and thrown 97 pitches. We go to the bullpen; PUke scores 2 in its 7th and then just crushes us with 7 more in the 8th. Final score PUke wins 11-9. Bitterly disappointing. Quote
TheWatShot Posted May 9 Posted May 9 4-0 lead today only to give up 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th. It's like our bullpen is trying to get Mercer fired. Quote

Happened way too many times this season. PUke's win today gives them a point in the Governor's Cup competition and it's IU 9.5 to PU 8.5 with only men's and women's outdoor track and field remaining next weekend. Quote

I think it was last season, we were up like 13-3 or something against USC and they came all the way back to beat us. Like, what are we even doing with our relief pitchers? You almost have to try to be this bad. Class of '66 Old Fart and IUHoosierJoe 2 Quote
