Game Thread: Howard, Sunday 8pm BTN

Recommended Posts

Agreed but to be fair, it was CuJo (apparently in the dog house based on tweets from media sitting close to IU bench), Green (injured and frustrated with his 2nd half), and Morgan (injured) in that shot I thought.

I was talking the wide shot at the end. They all looked like they just got knocked out of the tournament.

Just not encouraging overall. It's a lost, confused bunch.

Smith and Durham played well. Smith in particular. DD had a good game.

I don't know why these teams are killing us from 3. But we need to figure that out. We struggle scoring enough to make up for that.

The pack line is designed to give up perimeter shots. And when your guards are being lazy it gives up easy 3s

My take is that the confused part is semi-expected from a new coach.  I see promise from this team, but it will definitely take some time to "figure it out."  I see a lot of bad games at the beginning of the season but I wouldn't be surprised to see them disrupt some good teams later on in the year.  Not a tournament team, but a team that, at the end of the year, isn't a guaranteed win for better teams...

A lot better effort tonight but, like others have pointed out, I don't like the body language of the bench at the end of the game.

Maybe it's because they know, unlike in previous years, they're going to get some reality dropped on them by their coach.

This will be the first time in 8 years I won’t be at a game in AH...

I haven't been to AH in a few years. Hova lives here in the Haute with me. We're talking Hulman Center.

Would love a BtownBanners meet-up at AH though!

And Idk if it's been mentioned in the thread or not, but defensively I wasn't impressed with Green tonight. Getting beat off the first step too easily and too often. Then showing immature decision making when getting frustrated. He's gotta get that under control.

4 or 5 of these guys think they are destined for the NBA, yet we get blown out by Indiana State and barely beat Howard. Reality is a mother plucker.

That's pretty much the look I had on my face all game too.

It very well could be just me. Eye test vs objective measurement and all that. But it seemed like every defensive lapse I noticed involved Johnson.

I thought his D was most improved, minus a few plays. He seemed really locked in. Need his 3's to fall again and he'll be fine.

The defense looked better, but we are letting teams make passes to their shooters too easily. Most of their threes were of the catch and shoot variety. If we can't make the shooters put the ball on the floor before shooting, this is what we will get.

We are the only team to lose so far but tons of the other Big Ten teams have had closer calls than they should at home. PSU OSU, Maryland and Minny had similarly uncomfortable barely double digit wins against Campbell, Radford, Stony Brook and USC Upstate respectively. Illinois taken to wire by UT Martin, Rutgers taken to wire by Central Connecticut, Northwestern taken to wire by Loyola Maryland and Nebraska taken to wire by Eastern Illinois.

It's going to be a long year and hopefully we can improve but we are not the only team struggling mightily with teams we shouldn't.

I thought Johnson's effort on D was better. But, he's still late on closeouts and doesn't look like he really knows what he's supposed to be doing. The better effort is encouraging though.

Well it looks like it will be a year of struggles.  But that should be expected.  Team is in transition.   Lots to learn yet.  It's going to be a process the next few years.

It was nice to see some organization on both offense and defense.  It wasn't just every man for himself.  Progress.

Howard threw up some ridiculous stuff at the rim that went in.

The free throw shooting was abominable and even more cringeworthy in person than it was on TV I am sure.

This is a bad team. Not much more to say about it than that. Archie can only do so much. Fixing his team's awful FT shooting would be a start.

I don't think this is a bad team. I see this team as a team that is trying to figure out how to play according to the new coach's system.  Some posters comments about "breaking bad habits" is totally true.  22 three-pointers is CRAZY for a Archie Miller team.  They will learn.  They will gel.  They will gain confidence.  I don't see us as being a guaranteed tournament team, but come January, February, March--we will be a team that other teams don't really want to play.
