Corruption in College Basketball

Recommended Posts

According to @DanWetzel, who is in the NYC courtroom, Jim Gatto’s lawyer has proclaimed Oregon offered “an astronomical amount of money" to Brian Bowen, Under Armor paid Silvio De Sousa $20,000 to sign with Maryland, and Arizona offered $150,000 for Nassir Little.

Their defense is going to be going all-in on “NCAA by-laws should not be considered federal law.”

And they’re right. To think we’ve gotten to a point where the FBI and the SDNY are enforcing amateurism

Bowen’s father made a deal and won’t be prosecuted in exchange for his agreement to testify.

His testimony is going to be the "meat" of this investigation.  It will be the most anticipated statements of the hearings.

I can't wait....

The crazy thing is I don't see too many schools actually being penalized by the NCAA.  People (!) might get in trouble and replaced but the system will stay intact that allow the schools willing to cheat to profit from it.

A lot of it seems to run through the shoe companies too though. Not much the NCAA can do to shoe companies.

The NCAA has known for years how things work but they couldn't care less about changing it.  NCAA men's basketball is their cash cow, like 80% of their annual profits, so they won't punish those programs that make them the most money.

  • Apparently a major part of the defense during opening arguments is that the shoe company employees on trial could not have defrauded universities, because the universities were part of their effort to pay recruits. That theory will be buttressed by recitation of the shoe companies' discussions with coaching staffs which encouraged player payments. And THAT is where the juicy testimony will flow. The shoe company defendants are fully embracing that they broke NCAA regulations left and right.

  • The government's case theory will counter; that these complicit coaches were rogue employees acting in direct contradiction of their respective university's compliance departments and documented policies.

Soooo .... the testimony that exonerates the defendants and potentially produces "not guilty" verdicts could be extraordinarily damaging to many big name coaches.

Which is why I have never cared about paying players.

So Nassir Little gets offered 150k by Arizona and then goes to UNC for free? Right....

Speaking of which I heard Ayton and Zion Williamson were offered over 300k by Arizona and Clemson respectively.

He did so for the educational "benefits" provided by UNC.

Everyone knows Duke is slimy also and they got Williamson. Wonder what that cost them?

Not saying I doubt you but mind linking where you saw that?

Interesting quote from Steve Haney, attorney for Christian Dawkins:

‘Michigan State was one of the only schools that was NOT GOING to pay Brian Bowen to go there’

Haney listed MSU, Arizona, Oregon, Texas and Creighton as his final 5 before he picked
Louisville in June 2017.

Judge mulling whether to allow Louisville escort scandal in college hoops corruption trial

The defense points to the real world and just laughs. The entire sport is a hustle, the NCAA is just a bunch of mall cops.

I love this quote and it’s accuracy. The mall cops need to only be in the business of educating these athletes and allow these top players to get paid if they’re worthy. All you need to see is the list of schools involved and see that they’re all still mentioned by most of the current top recruits. Nothing has changed except another Texas school will go down to make it look like the mall cops are doing their jobs. And UNC players will not be educated. Disgusting.
