Why is everyone under the impression that a guy would want to go from head coach of team in a Power 5 conference to assistant? This logic makes no sense to me.

I actually agree with you but at this point, its better than being unemployed.  And he doesn't have the face for media, the bald head, yes, but not the face.  Not many head coach positions still available so if he is going to be an assistant why not at a Blue Blood like Indiana?

What other jobs are available besides Gerogetown which is all but wrapped up already? Might as well get a year in at a high level program.

Same goes for Crean, he's not going to take a mid-major job. Groce and Tom both want a high level job that is not available right now.

Keep your feet in the game and next year when the coaching carousel fires up again, you're ready to move.  Keeps you on the recruiting circuit and in touch with the AAU coaches, etc.  And he may have a mitigating clause in his contract that prevents him from collecting any Illinois buyout if he doesn't make the effort for employment.  Don't remember the specific language in FCTC's contract but basically sitting at home and watching TV isn't an optionl.  Maybe Groce has something similar to deal with.

Just my $.02 worth.

Feels like a step back while not working gives the impression you're waiting for the right job. Idk, I'd take the year and wait. You don't backtrack once you've made it to the top.

It's completely fair to say it is a step-back But as a former head coach of IU once said, "It's Indiana"

Archie and Groce are friends ( i think ) and have worked together. Groce is from Indiana, he know's the state. It's worth a call at least. He would be huge imo on the recruiting trail.

He might as well add something else to his CV.

He got fired, he isn't going to be taking a step forward or sideways, any time a coach gets fired, most likely he is going to be taking a step back.  Otherwise he probably wouldn't have gotten fired.  (This applies to getting fired for performance/results, not any kind of altercation/disciplinary type firings)

One more thing, as mentioned above, it may be that in his contract, in order to receive the buyout for getting fired, he must look for and obtain a job to receive said buyout?  In other words, he can't just sit around collecting a paycheck.

Can't he just blow the interviews though.

I assume that he is about to become our main recruiter.

Lol that's what I figured.

I still want Groce but it seems like this guy is pretty connected locally from the Dayton boards. Kind of nice we won't have to waste time on 17 he can get focused where it really matters

Yeah - Groce would bring more than just recruiting obviously. Ostrom is a pure recruiter from what I've read. Wouldn't hurt to have multiple guys with great recruiting history especially if one is an actual coach too.
