Popular Post Kipper23 Posted March 31, 2017 Popular Post Posted March 31, 2017 I was 21, a senior at IU and news editor of the Daily Student. Technology being was it was (or wasn't) at the time, we had to tell the photographers the dimensions of the large photo we wanted to use on the front page well ahead of time. So I designed the front at lunchtime at Nick's, using a menu as a straight edge and leaving room for "IU WINS IT ALL" in the largest point size I'd ever used. I remember the IDS staff got a lot of work done before the game started so we could watch as much as possible on conference room TV. I also remember kicking a soccer ball around the newsroom during halftime to get rid of our nervous energy. A few minutes into the second half, the managing editor approached me and said I should probably design another front page, just in case. I still have the paper design (and metal press plate) of the winning front, but I'm not sure what happened to the alternative design. We might have burned it. But I remember the headline was "Syracuse downs IU, XX-XX" over a horizontal photo, and there was a story about taxes and something about the College of Arts and Sciences on the front as well. It was so depressing to design it. When we won, we all took a few minutes to run to Showalter Fountain, but we couldn't stay long because that big, beautiful photo was due any minute. We got the paper out, and everything's a little fuzzy after that. Leo, schoosier, IUsafety and 8 others 11 Quote

Followed by "Hi mom! It's me, Rick!" and then there was Hillman, high-octave voice screaming "...and then BUCKET!" Love those memories. It's been way too long, guys. I was a freshman that year and I'm pretty sure it was Darryl Thomas that said: "BUCKET. IT WAS BUCKET!" ... Then Hillman said something like, "I went to the basket to get a rebound or something and IT WENT STRAIGHT THROUGH AND THAT WAS IT!" Forgive me, I've watched that tape a few times! rebelhoosier848891, Indy, Josh and 1 other 4 Quote

Mine has Agent Orange symptoms but thankfully he's still around.I was in 5th grade. My teacher told us we had to be Indiana fans or Purdoo fans. I knew I lived in Indiana not Purdoo, so it was an easy choice. Then at the end of my first year of watching sports, the Hoosiers won it all. I was at a Purdoo family friend's house watching it. I still remembdr the taste of their tears. I was hooked. Napleshoosier, hoosierbannerd, Stuhoo and 3 others 6 Quote

schoosier Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Colonial Crest apts my junior year. Had huge party and even invited our Purdue friends down. TV in every room; I punched a hole in the ceiling after Smarts shot. Think I patched 3 before we moved out. We got a ride to Shower fountains, lost our ride and walked back. I remember it being very cold. We watched the Final Four at Nick's. Everyone just came alive on campus. Little 5 was especially festive that year like we needed a reason. That team wouldn't be denied and we had excellent bench play in Hillman & Steve Eyl in the final four. ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote

He fell asleep during the game and even though he could hardly breathe and was in tremendous pain--a few hour later he raised up in bed and yelled out "Did we win"? Yes--I told him and he smiled and went back to sleep. God --he was a true IU fan and I miss him so much!Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners Napleshoosier, ALASKA HOOSIER, HoosierAloha and 10 others 13 Quote

rebelhoosier848891 Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 I have been on campus the last couple of days with my daughter for freshman orientation--yes--another generation of RebelHoosiers on the way--and during the campus tour the guide stopped at Showalter Fountain and talked about the 87 championship and the missing fish. Those things were heavy--one ended up in a frat house--one ended up on top of Ballantine Hall--one ended up in the President's yard --and one was never found at all and has been replaced by a smaller fish. The legend is that Knight has the missing fish and will return it when IU apologizes for firing him and IU will not win another championship until the fish is returned to its rightful place. Anyway--the guide was talking about this and my daughter was laughing because I had already told her the story many times and because the guide made it sound like it was ancient history. My wife and I chuckled during the tour because we were both there in 87 together as we fell in love at IU and the rest is history. My wife and I were talking about it a few minutes ago as we can't believe it's already been 30 years. It's time for another championship! We are past due Hoosier Nation! Brass Cannon Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 The thing that has shocked me about the 76 team is how the undefeated season got so little coverage. The undefeated season hadn't become this mythical holy grail yet. I doubt anybody would have said that would be the last one ALASKA HOOSIER, rebelhoosier848891 and HoosierAloha 3 Quote

IU Soccer has 8 national titles and I think IU swimming/diving has 10 titles. Impressive to say the least!Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote
