Welcome Coach Miller

Just throwing this out there bc I keep forgetting to mention it.......I'm a Cubs fan and I remember how I felt after they announced Theo Epstein as General Manager. It was a feeling of unwavering and effortless trust...... I have the exact same feeling now that I had then.

You are talking about the Theo Epstein that helped lead the Red Sox to two WS titles, right?

While evidently, I am one of the delusional and am still a bit disappointed by the hire, let's keep some perspective here...hiring Donovan (2 NC, 4 FF, 6 SEC regular season titles and 4 SEC tournament titles) would have been a fair comparison to Epstein.  Miller...is much more of an unknown...yes he has has some success in the A10, which is a great conference (I used to have season tickets at Temple when they were still an A10 school), but we don't know what he is capable of doing on the big stage.

Wait...are about the same John Groce that just got fired from Illinois?

If so, I understand it, he is from Muncie and Taylor Univ, but he has been a HC for almost 10 years now...what makes you think that he would be willing to take a step back?

I don't know if he would be, but I know he and Archie have ties (coached at Ohio State together) with one another so it wouldn't surprise me if they'd at least talk about it.

He got fired. You usually have to take a step back when that happens. If he wants to stay at a big program, an assistant jon makes sense. If you learn under a successful coach, people are more willing to give you another chance.

Yes...I understand that he got fired...I would think that a HC job at a smaller school, as he did have some success at Ohio, would make more sense.

Also, I think that it would be difficult for him, since they were both assistants at OSU, to work under a friend.

I don't know about his ties with high school/AAU but I think as far as another X and O guy, you couldn't go wrong with Tonagel. I think he has a bright future and some successful time in the Indiana program would be a great lauching point to a D1 gig for him. If you aren't familiar with him, dude has impressive numbers as a coach with Ind. Wes. and played college ball at Valpo I believe.

I'd say a head coach position at UI to a lead assistant position at Indiana is a slight move up. He might even earn himself up to 800-1.2 million a year I'd say here.

A step back like that is a desperate move (as it is with most jobs/professions)...I doubt that Groce is that desperate.

He and Archie worked together before. From Indiana has strong connections. Archie and Groce together may be the strongest coaching combination in the Big Ten.

Not trying to speak for ht, but I believe he was talking about his level of excitement. Not necessarily a resume comparison.

Sorry, wasn't trying to be a Purdue Person. Just saying that it depends on what he's looking for. An assistant job may be it. Maybe he's decided he doesn't like the head coaching gig.

Also I don't know if this has been talked about, but John Groce would be a great assistant coach here. Could really help on the recruiting side of things and has Indiana ties.

He also could be one of the top candidates to replace Archie at Dayton.

Perhaps, I'm not saying he's for sure coming here, just speculating that he would fit in really well here or at virtually any other big school as an assistant.

I don't see any way Groce takes a mid major job. I think it's more likely he either sits out or becomes an assistant coach at a major conference for a season.

Did Crean's assistant coaches all pack up once he was fired? Is any assistant currently on campus running offseason workouts or anything? I have no idea how that usually works.

They are all still employed until notified.

To my memory, I don't believe the coaches are allowed to have workouts this time of year. That being said , Eleston and Garl are in charge for now.

Agreed that it might be...but considering that he was just at Illinois (don't see a lot of HCs making moves within the same conference, unless you are going from AC to HC) and they were both Assistant Coaches at OSU at the same time, it just seems hard for me to believe that he would make a move like that...but maybe I am wrong.

Fred Glass made it clear that he was committing resources to the coaching staff and recruiting budget... I doubt he will actually join the staff but Glass did mention that he was committing resources to the staff and recruiting budgets. Maybe we are able to pay him a lucrative figure for a short while, until he's able to find something more suitable/sustainable.

Like Dalton pointed out, I don't see him taking a mid major move right now. Might as well get some coaching in at Indiana until a good program opens up.

In my mind the only way that he takes an assistant job is if he is under someone like Roy, Coach K, Izzo or maybe even Self.  Not sure if you have ever had to work for a peer that maybe got promoted ahead you or is having more success than you, but it is tough.
