Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers

Recommended Posts

From Rick Bozich

Just finished an hour visit with #iubb coach Archie Miller in a "columnist roundtable." I'll share a few highlights before I start writing.

My sense is that other than the guys making NBA decisions, Miller expects remaining players to return next season.
Miller said he plans to make announcement on entire staff as a group. Wants #iubb to be cutting edge on social media like Ohio State fball.
Finally, it won't be next season, but I'd look for an #iubb series against Arizona. Would be Tucson & Bloomington, not neutral sites.

I would really like to see an Arizona home/home in rotation with the ACC challenge opponent.

ACC (road)
Zona (home)
Butler or ND
UL

Add one of Duke, UNC, and KU to the above to make a solid core of annual games.

If I was forced to choose 1 I'd take Moore. I don't think Durham will turn into much and Smith just doesn't impress me. Moore has the potential to turn into something special imo.

No way! Justin Smith is far and away the best prospect for me.
MUCH better athlete. Much better high school program and competition level. Much better defensive potential.

I look for IU to play UK in the next couple years as well

Seems like a bit of a gray area.  If he's formally asked for his release that to me says he wants to explore other options so we simply thank him and honor his request.  Seems to me that with  the recruit initiating a request for a release, the recruit is no longer in control of the situation and IU holds all the aces.

He dad said in an interview IU wanting him to meet face to face with CAM first. His dad also said he knew it wouldn't be a problem getting his release after that if AL chose to still want to leave

Yeah I think Justin Smith will be the best college player of the three. He plays angry and physical. Has a propensity for plays that demoralize the other team. Seems to understand floor spacing and timing to be a great wing. We need physical guys like him to compete against MSU and other tough teams.

Ideally..

Josh / Green
Rojo / Jones
James / Smith
Collin / Morgan / Freddie
Bryant / Davis

10-11 man rotation.

Looking at this proposed lineup we are going to lose some guys IMO. We look deep (on paper).

I think OG and Blackmon still make the most sense. Mum is the word with Bryant as well. I think he knows well enough to not even try.

Green / Newkirk
Blackmon Jr. / Johnson
Morgan / Smith
Hartman / McSwain
Bryant / Davis

This would never happen but I would like to see it.

Green has a higher ceiling than Newkirk. He needs run with the starters in the noncon to get a better feel. Newkirk could be really solid as a backup for 15 mpg.

If we go small JBJ and RoJo together. However, I'd like to see a JBJ running off screens wearing his defender down as he gets open look after open look. Each would ideally get 25-30 minutes.

Morgan, with improved shooting, and Hartman would be perfect as screeners to open up JBJ and Green or to pop/slash after setting screens. Freddie would be perfect for 10-15 mpg of hardboard defense, rebounding, and making the opponents guards think twice how they handle ballscreens.

Finally, Bryant adding muscle and playing big on the block could free up shooters. He should be rebounding at a high level and getting drop off passes from Green. Davis should be a force with an entire offseason of conditioning. We have the horses to physically punish opponents now.

I'd be okay with Jones leaving. Green has potential to be a PG in the B1G.

I agree with Green over Josh. I couldn't stand Josh as a player here. But having Archie ( a former D1 PG) coach Josh for a summer could really be interesting.

Morgan on the wing would be interesting.. I like him off the bench supplying that energy and basketball IQ. Collin being back is HUGE, no question about that. We need Collin starting. He's a natural leader and a very high IQ player.

Ideally, we would trade Smith and Moore for Priller and Gelon. Most of our roster would be compiled of 4 star recruits or better.

My guess is Crean couldn't land any other Indiana kids so he took a flyer on Gelon so he could show he recruits Indiana .

I'm buying what you're selling. I am not a fan of "position-less" or 3 guard line-ups. No reason to come up with anything fancy.

UNC (spits) just won a NC (spits again) with a basically traditional line-up that plays good, fundamental ball. IU just needs to get back to doing it too. Talented players + fundamentals= lots o wins.

What about Curtis Jones? I think he would be in line for some minutes. Don't see him being the 11th man on this team.
