I've been as vocal against Crean as anyone on this board, for a couple of years now.  He's been overrated as a recruiter and he's a mediocre in-game coach.  That being said, if the choice was Steven Alford or Tom Crean I'd take Tom Crean after a kick to the groin.

One thing, Alford might be able to unite the fan base.  We'd be united in wanting Glass's head on a platter but we'd be united.

Alford would be a terrible hire.  If Marshall is a lateral move then Alford is a few steps down.

1. Brad Stevens is experiencing lots of success in Boston.... He's not saying no because IU is a mess... This guy just coached the NBA Eastern Conference All Stars.

2. Donovan.... From what I've read, it's a timing thing.. it might even be the case that he wanted to coach through the playoffs and IU wanted him to commit now...

Again, he's not giving IU the finger by not committing ..

These 2 were "pie in the sky" reaches. So our 3rd 4th or 5th choices may very well be the top 2-3 AVAILABLE coaches.

I agree about the timing. Even further, I can't imagine IU would even request/expect Billy to leave his team prior to the playoffs. Are the Thunder likely to advance? No, but leaving a team that still has a (slim) chance to win the NBA Finals isn't acceptable.

If BD is willing to come to IU then a few weeks aren't gonna scotch the deal, IMO.

Going a bit far imo. I think Alford is more improbable than donovan and i think he is a huge risk for multiple reasons however i give him a big chance to be better than crean

Absolutely. I totally respect a coach for playing out the season with his current team. It's just not a good look to cut bait before the end of said season

I find this hard to believe, Alford has never been past the sweet 16 and has missed the NCAA 12/21 years.

People are wearing their cream and Crimson colored glasses. Because he played here under BK, he is a good coach.

Stevens and Donovan are the only two that are guaranteed success. But Archie Miller has HUGE potential. Matta is probably gone after this season so Ohio State worries me in that regard. I personally think Archie is just waiting for Ohio State to want him. That would be a big blow if Donovan is gone too

Marshall wouldn't recruit better than Alford. Alford would lock down the state and bring Wilkes.

Agreed. Glass isn't arrogant enough to say, "you want to coach the rest of your season? No, commit now or the door is closed and we keep our search open."

Alford resume after 22 years coaching at Iowa, New Mexico, and UCLA:

- never made it past the S16
- missed the tournament 12 times
- the alleged rape cover up at Iowa


Sounds like worse results than Crean, with a much, much shittier character.

I'm not an advocate for Alford at all. Just trying to find perspective. I feel like IUs best options are Holtman, A. Miller, and Collins. Kevin Keatts too. He learned a lot from Pitino.

And 1 thing I will add about Kevin Keatts. Not only has he done a great job so far, but Pitino assistants typically do very well. Donovan, Frank Vogel, Kevin Willard, Scotty Davenport.

Jeff Goodman just said LSU is not a landing spot for Crean if/when IU lets him go but Mizzou is much more logical.

Interesting. His name is being thrown out by the big dogs now. Glass's move. He surely doesn't want all these rumors and phone calls trying to get the scoop from people.

Also worth noting Mark Fox will be retained. May god the Georgia AD made this announcement because of rumors but Glass does nothing with a lot more rumors and a lot more eyes.

Keatts just doesnt have the name recognition. Lot of recruits would wonder who he is when he came in their gym. I don't like that. It would take a year or two for him to take off here.

LSU doesnt have the money to offer him is why. Nothing else and he is right. Mizzou has been in the picture because of their 3 million dollar range.
