TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

Sounds like a post from someone who is so concerned with the embarrassment of being wrong that he can't enjoy a win over a ranked team.

A win by a team that is young, but without any question is developing, improving, and rallying behind each other, their senior leader, and their head coach, Mr. Tom Crean.

Oh, I enjoyed the win alright. I'm an IU fan all the way. But "concerned with the embarrassment of being wrong"???. LOLOLOLOLOL.

Good night Mr. Delusional.

"We did."

Wow, what great coaching! I wonder if he quoted from "Rudy" too. Yawwwwnnnnnn.[/quote]

Yawn, but it apparently worked. Hoosiers controlled most of the game, and Tom's done a fine job lately.

Not in any way doubting your IU fandom.

However, when your response is ten emoticons and a personal insult?

That's not likely to change the minds of folks who think you are embarrassed that you were proven wrong.

Thanks for taking time away from coaching your championship team to provide your thoughtful insight. It's wonderful to have those who know exactly how to coach this team here!

No problem Mamacita, no problem at all.

My rather superficial insights of the game yesterday were in direct reply to the sarcasm directed at those of us who earlier deigned to question the used car salesman we have as coach. We aren't fooled by winning streaks, at home, against Big Ten opponents in an embarrassingly down year for the league. Being upset at my post is about as lunatic as some of the pious posts above, proclaiming vindication for having stood by the team. Those of us who have already stated our opinions on the subject, apparently are secure in our convictions, as opposed to those persons who feel threatened by criticism of the team, and therefore make it a bi-weekly point to spout delirious acceptance of mediocrity. It's like the average Kentucky teenage boy, beaming with pride after having just lost his innocence, confessing later that evening that he wasn't sure his sister would go along with the idea. It just doesn't mean anything.

1)  The B1G is likely, top to bottom, the best conference in America this year.

2)  Winning streaks against ranked B1G opponents are GREAT evidence of improvement and accomplishment.

3)  Standing by the team through thick and thin is a good thing. A very good thing.

(As long as your team is working hard, working toward college degrees, and is accepting coaching).

4)  The Hoosiers are playing three guys out of nine or ten rotation players who had rotation minutes in college basketball before this year. My expectations for the team this year were that they would take plenty of lumps, but that as the year progressed the offensive spacing and ball movement, turnover ratio, team unity, defensive rotation and help-side defense, and decision making would all improve, and that would lead to more wins.

That is currently what I see going on. Won't happen every game, but it's happening.

Honestly I can't understand why people are wanting Crean to be fired. When you lose 4 out of 5 starters the next year, you're obviously not going to do as good. When you're playing mostly freshmen, some results aren't gonna be pretty. I hate using old whiner Calipari, but he goes from winning a title to losing in the first round of the NIT. Did he get fired? He only won that title because he had 6 first round draft picks. If this core goes a couple of years without improving or winning, then talk to me about the man who turned the Indiana Basketball program around.

1)  Cal won the title though, and that gives you more slack.  Like it or not, Crean does not and should not have the slack of a championship coach.

2)  The rebuild is over, expectations shifted.  It's no longer "look what he did" it's "can he take us where we should expect to be".

I would argue that it should actually be "can he take us where we should be" instead of expect to be. If I've learned one thing since starting this site, it's that it is IMPOSSIBLE to ever meet Hoosiers expectations :)

We could go undefeated and win the National Championship and there would be fans who find issues with something!

^^^^^ What this guy said.  People have an opinion of Crean based on other things besides his coaching.  In this thread, I have seen him called a snake, and a used car salesman.  That has nothing to do with coaching, which is what those same people pointed to as the reason he shouldn't be here.  I am guessing coaching isn't really what they dislike about the man.

I can only speak for myself, but coaching is how I judge him. I don't think you would find myself or anyone else even mentioning the obvious mannerisms, etc if he would have hung a real banner. Look at what we put up with Knight and all his shenanigans, but he got a pass because he was a great coach. The skeptics will always be there based on our performance on the court. Afterall, we are Indiana fans and can't be fouled by the actual product. With that said two great wins so my compliments to him on those. I think its too late though.

I think he has some serious in game faults.  I know after beating Wisconsin nobody had more top 25 wins than us over the last 3 seasons other than Kansas.  I am not sure where things stand on that now, but the dude gets them ready to play.  I am not saying it is always pretty.  It is not.  I am often disappointed and confused on the offensive side.  Its funny because we were a top offensive team last year.  People still hated it.  At this point, I think people either like him, or they don't.  As a mod, I have seen this conversation a bunch.  It is one of the most tiring arguments and always ends the same way.  I just don't want to see people get banned over something so stupid that literally has been beaten to death, revived, and beaten to death again.

I always see people refer to the offensive rating last year.  I wonder how much it's inflated due to us being so good in transition, and we played a lot of awful teams to boot.  If there was a stat to show just our half court offense, I'd be beyond stunned if it was even remotely close to the top.

We were great in transition, but our half court offense was just a mess.  Look at the number of games we've lost when it was low scoring, and I don't really believe in coincidences.  I still don't like our half court offense though, my feelings range from strongly dislike to pure contempt.

But that is the thing though.  I know you are a smart dude, and I know you know that a huge part of CTC offense is the break and the secondary break.  Getting quick shots before the defense gets set.  Our half court leaves a lot to be desired for.  A lot of people said the same thing with Pitino's Cardinals last year before they got going.  It is amazing how much shots falling skews the perception.  There are only a handful of teams that truly run a solid half court man.  I mean that sincerely, because this argument is so old.  Watch a team for 30+ games and try to not pick apart an aspect of their game.  I think only Coach K and Billy Donovan run an offense that is "appealing" to me.  Beyond that, everyone runs a gimmick offense that is based on players being able to make plays.  Those 2 coaches put players in good spots consistently.  They are the only 2 coaches who I can say that about that I have watched regularly.

^^^^^ YES!!! Crean's offense looks UNSTOPPABLE when shots are dropping, and it really is impossible to stop when that happens. (See UNC game last year).

I'd say Crean's offense is 75% fast break, 10% secondary break, 10% turnover and 5% Half court sets.

The turnovers isn't a jab at Crean or the offense, when you play that fast they are going to happen.

Ummmm, the object of the game is to put the ball in the hoop.  Every offense looks unstoppable when shots are falling.

Just saying.

Obviously... Wasn't my point though.

It just reminded me of when Calipari said the dribble drive is the best offense when shots are falling.  The same thing applies to literally every offense.
