TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

I don't think they would want Glass gone, because everything else he has done. Not just in sports, but updating facilities in multiple areas. I think he is one of the top ADs we have had ever already. Plus, I don't think it would be hard to explain the situation we were in, and Crean wasn't his guy. The situation we were in he had to overpay who wanted to be here. Coming from where we were, and the excitement Crean got up front, it is easy to see why he did what he did. I don't think any of the donors would have a problem with Glass. They have seen in other sports and areas what he has done.

I wouldn't think so either but on another board there is somebody who apparently speaks with one of these donors and allegedly that individual told him if they did decide to finance a change of coaches that they would want Fred's head on a pike too. Granted it is the internet and you can't believe everything you read but...it is quite possible the donors do not necessarily care about anything but the basketball program even though you & me obviously can see and appreciate the work that Fred Glass has done with the athletic department as a whole.

Nobody questioned that RMK was a disciplinarian, but he had players get arrested. It might not be right to excuse it because they are "just kids", but it is a big reality of that age group, and often older ones.

I remember him dismissing some for questionable behavior (Tommy Baker, Roberson), but do not recall any being arrested. I may be wrong. Can you tell me who those players were?

Six years is a long enough time frame for any coach to carve his niche on winning. Whether it be Knight with defense and in game coaching or planning, most long term coaches at one school hang their hat on something. This is where I feel Crean falls woefully short. I just can't find one area where I can say all of his teams exhibit excellence. Sampson for all of his weaknesses, his teams were tough and played hard. Tarkanian ran most teams into the ground. All of Creans teams seem to be soft, disinterested, and if things are not going well tend to not be able to turn it around. I think they mirror him. This is a systemic problem that one more year will not solve regardless of the talent. See last year.

If the $ is there now, why wait? But I would suggest you have the top candidate to replace him already agreeing in principle. How do you do that with no contact clauses, etc? You have middlemen like Eddie Fogler contact coaches agents to see if there is interest. Then go from there. The last thing we would need is a repeat of the last "search committe" that failed miserably. Texas football search also comes to mind.

Crean's coaching failures result as much from his thinking that coaching requires running up and down the sideline and onto the floor during games. This coaching misbehavior for games certaintly can cause players to misread him and his alledged"coaching". Players probably don't see this behavior during practices.
Thw best coaches don't use this Crean "method".

Crean's teams here have been great in transition, unfortunately that's about the extent of it.

Crean rebuilt the program, and we all appreciate that, but the rebuild is over and expectations shifted. Now it's a question of do you believe Crean is the coach to take us where we should expect to be. If the answer is no, might as well just bite the bullet and say he should be fired. The worst thing would be to keep him around and be in basketball purgatory, good enough to keep the money from wanting him gone but never actually winning anything.

I would agree that maybe half of his teams have been good in transistion, but when you can't take care of the ball you lose the benefit of running. Plus, if you are a running team you would want to speed the game up no matter who you play, but I rarely remember a Crean coached Indiana team ever committing to this. If you think you know what you do best, you do it. Crean was thought of as a guard/ wing type offensive coach coming into Indiana, and yet we are in year 6 with no viable shooters other than our point. Its like he plays to his teams weaknesses rather than strengths which is why I say it is systemic and cannot be changed. Time to fish and stop cutting bait.

The one that pops to mind is Jeffrey Newton, Scott County, IN, marijuana.

Newton never played for RMK.

Sherron Wilkerson was arrested and subsequently kicked off the team. That happened when I was in school. I'm pretty sure both Pat Knight and Richard Mandeville got in bar fights in Bloomington...I think Pat got arrested and faced consequences from his father. In Richard's case, I am not sure. I just remember that he was involved in a scuffle.

Newton played for Davis then? I'm getting old. Was it Newton that got arrested on the pot charge? I was positive that it was a RMK player.

Yes, Newton played for Davis. He was a Knight recruit though. RMK even wrote that he was excited to coach that team because of the skillsets that Newton, Jeffries and Leach.

Question is, do the donors even give a crap about the other sports, or is it all, "we're a (mens) basketball school"? I'm not sure how many would care.

True, but if the AD were to go to them and make them feel like they have input on the next BB Coach at IU, they wouldn't go at his head. If they hated him or Crean at this point lets be real. That athletic department would not have got the money they have the last 5 years. Money is coming in at a record pace. That will be the telling sign whether or not the boosters believe in Crean or Glass.

So Crean said on his radio show that last year no one could have foreseen that Cody and Vic would leave early....

Guess it kind of depends on the time frame for "last year". I don't think anyone really expected Vic to make the huge leap he did after his sophomore year ended, but during the year it was obvious he was ready and was leaving. Many expected Cody to leave when he decided to come back for his second year.

EDIT: My first reaction was "LOL, a blind-folded, sleeping, locked in a closet Stevie Wonder could've seen that one".

I'm not sure but I feel like he probably meant at the start of the season. And to be fair I would venture to say no one expected Vic to breakout like that and leave

I am confident, ok 80% confident, that Crean made some comment about Vic and the NBA near the beginning if the season last year. It became a taking pint on the message boards. His comment was based on what Vic does in practices and what the scouts who attend those practices were saying. If my memory is correct then this is revisionist thinking. Cody going pro was obvious.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

I think he was explaining to a question of why there is no leadership on this team. It shouldn't matter vic and cody said they were leaving right after season why didn't anybody step into the role. It was just crean trying to b.s. but it didn't work out so good this time lol

Sent from my SCH-I535 using BtownBanners mobile app
