TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

The administration made it abundantly clear, 2 seasons ago, that they won't be forced by the fans into any decision they don't want to make. We have no voice with this administration. Again, 2 seasons ago made this clear.

No one knows how close things got. Just because they stayed the course does not mean things were not close to tipping the other way.

When Mike Davis was going through his final years the admin did everything to keep him despite fan pressure but eventually empty seats and loud booing during games helped force their hand.

I don't think it would get as bad as during the Davis years because will do enough but if this team or next years miss the tourney then I think that will be enough.

Couple that with his contract. Soon you are going to have to extend or make a change. Not the day the contract expires but 1-2 years before that.

A mediocre/underperforming year, like we may be seeing, will not help. That keeps things foggy and unclear.

Probably true. I'm still holding on to hope that Glass realizes in the next year or two that Crean cant get us to the next level and makes a move. I think there is a 5-10 % chance of this happening.

I think the odds are better than that if we don't do something in the next year or two.  Honestly, if we don't pick up the recruiting significantly, Crean's in real trouble.   Nobody's excited about our recruits and nobody really knows any of them.  Losing Wilkes was predictable, but big.  He needs Langford and Phinesee to commit, just to get some buzz going.  If that doesn't happen and we don't make a good run by 2019 or so?   He has every reason to have a very hot seat.

Sadly before the year I put the pitchforks away. Thinking Crean had turned the corner. Seems every time I am convinced he has to go we beat some folks and as soon as I think we are in a good spot, Ft Wane and Nebraska things happen

Not to good teams at home they don't.

The basketball team sells tickets and Crean doesn't break NCAA rules. I think that's what it comes down to for Glass and the university. They're satisfied with the success we have had.  Winning national championships wouldn't make a top 10 list of their priorities for the program. He'll stay because IU doesn't want a coach who's bigger than the school.

unless you know this from glass and the athletic department I would have to disagree. They are not 100% content and have looked around. They aren't at the point of firing just to fire but that doesn't mean they won't look further and find someone they are comfortable with and move forward. Crean has done a B job so it isn't easy or a no brainer to move on, they need an A replacement which might come this is coking from another coach at IU. They are not 100% tied to Crean but it would take a lot to move forward with his removal

I'm as critical of Crean as anyone, I've consistently said one season will do nothing to change my opinion of him and I still 100% believe he is not the coach we need to reach the next level.  That said, tonight isn't on him; UNC was just that much better.

Just now going thru this thread. Kids pick the selected colleges 90% of the time because of who the coach is. I agree with most everything you say here and UNC was I'll say OVERWHELMINGLY better than us. But coach has got to pull players consistently to be considered blue blood. Most definitely disagree with your "tonight isn't on him"

I'll be sitting here waiting until after the Louisville game with popcorn.

This isn't about one game. He has won some big games but he don't win consistently and never goes far when it matters.

The fans do have a voice quit spending money, quit going to game, hit them where it hurts and change will happen. The problem with Indiana basketball is so many people are fans and that its so hard to get season tickets people keep buying them even with lackluster performance, and being upset because they don't want to lose their seats. The only way is to show displeasure, and to not spend money on their products.

Maybe Im the crazy one but I just have to think this madness has to end at some point.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what's the situation with Glass? Is the assumption that he will stay here the next fifteen years or so?

My guess is he was in pretty good standing, but after everything with the football extension and everything that has went on there things could have changed some. Because if there was problems you don't hand out a 6 year extension. If nothing else it makes him look bad in the publics eye.

Tom Crean is a product of the "good old boy" network.  The man gets paid 3million a year and has not lived up to it come tournament time.  The sample size is there and if this were any other person they would have been fired a couple seasons ago.  If some of us are so resigned to accepting mediocrity at least let's save ourselves a million for the same results.

I went to the game last night. The team seemed totally unprepared. Crean does nothing to help them when they are struggling because he doesn't know how to adjust when the other team is taking away what they want to do.

Adding to my frustration was that some of the players seemed more interested in waving their arms up and down to get the crowd going than actually playing. But the final straw was when Crean started doing the same. The guy is clearly in over his head.

I saw Crean do that on TV. My first thought was no amount of cheering with teach this team defense.

That's the "drowning out of water motion." He was hoping one of the 17,000+ would throw him a line. I'm surprised the answer wasn't on one of his notecards. He would be a good coach at a huge football school that doesn't know they have basketball too.

Here we go.... Crean isn't going anywhere for the next few years. Last night was UGLY. But a W vs Louisville changes things and gives this team another marquee win.

And the seesaw continues. Even with a win over hooker U we will struggle to get a good seed. Regardless, the ceiling is a Sweet 16.

Last year even the most ardent Crean supporters were saying elite 8 or make a change. Then the year starts bad and we lose Blackman and the expectations were lowered and most were happy with how the year went.

This seems to be the cycle with Crean. Raise expectations - And when we don't meet them do Just enough to stay around.
