TOM CREAN FIRED

A few more thoughts on using UConn, Syracuse, Ohio State, Arizona, Louisville and Michigan State as our basis of expectations...

- They made the NCAA Tournament 49/60 seasons (two of which were ineligible.) That means if we go by the same expectations, we should expect to make the Tournament 5/6 seasons, as Striper noted above.

- There were three national championships in 60 seasons. That means we should expect a National Championship once every 20 years.

-There were 11 Final Fours in 60 seasons. That means we should expect around one Final Four every six years.

- There were 31 Sweet 16 appearances in 60 seasons. That means we should expect to make the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament every other season.

Correction, Bob Knight had the buffer of THREE national championships, 11 Big Ten Championships, an extraordinarily high graduation rate, and not even a hint of scandal from the NCAA. That's not our imagination or something we achieved by looking back through rose colored glasses. Those are facts. People who win championships don't have to be flexible.

Not exactly true , you forgot the Alford calendar & Jay Edwards weed suspension . Everyone in today's world must be flexible . Some people who win Championships cheat and those are facts . I would rather run a clean program without a championship rather than cheat to get one

There is no such thing as a program that is 100% clean, no not even Crean's.  Alford posing for a charity calendar is lightyears away from some programs (I'm looking at you, Kentucky).

If you want to mention Alford and Edwards, then we've certainly had our share of those type of things lately.

That secondary violation on Gary Harris comes to mind.

Lot of work to be done. I hope everyone is enjoying the outright Big Ten I know I have. Purdue fans are not saying as much as they were lol. This weekend though that all goes out the window crean better bring a focused team or all momentum could be ruined Friday or damaged Saturday lol. Follow that with a poor ncaa tourney and the anti crean bunch will be loud as ever imo. I think Crean deserves alot of credit for this season but still has to prove he can win when it counts. I hope he proves he can but once again a different tom looks poised to shine let's hope ours is as well.

Yep.  I don't believe that was something that just slipped his mind, but I'm not going to beat him up over it; those things happen all across the country a lot.

The bumper sticker stuff also.  Incredibly stupid ruling to us, but in the eyes of the NCAA it's impermissible benefits from a booster.

So... we're pretty much on track...?

Haha, I guess that's in the eye of the beholder, right?

I'll admit that by digging a little deeper and coming up with some of those numbers for those schools, it has changed my perception somewhat. As much as I'd love to be a Final Four contender ever year, I understand that it would be very difficult to accomplish. But yet, we can still be a Top 10 program without meeting such lofty expectations. Do I think we're on track? Well, maybe... possibly.

We're gonna find out a lot more about where we stand here in the next few weeks. If we make a nice run in the tournament (and I think we have a good/great chance to do so), our recent results will resemble something more like a Top 10 program. However, I don't think that necessarily means there should be talks of dramatic contract extensions like you hear Seth Greenburg or Dick Vitale speak about. We've invested Top 10 program money into the program. If we get Top 10 results, then isn't that the expectation? Would we really be exceeding expectations to warrant a raise? Again, that's something else that is in the eye of the beholder.

But congratulations to Crean this year. The turnaround has been spectacular and he has this team playing like a definite Final Four contender. Great job!

I'm with you on this. Honestly, I'm always surprised by how many people consider Arizona as more successful than us, especially when you consider one of the main Crean criticisms is the lack of success while recruiting at such a high level. Arizona has consistently recruited at the highest level (probably just slightly behind UK and Duke), and has vastly underachieved, in my opinion.

Our Final Four and Championship Game appearances are more recent.

But, they're a consistent Elite Eight team, which people like. Having been through this drought with Indiana, I can see why people wish we had their kind of success, but if it's not going to translate to a banner then it's a waste and just enough to give you hope that next year you'll get over the hump. When people talk about wanting Sean Miller, it makes me nervous because I don't know if he is the kind of coach who could ever get over the hump unless a lot of things fall right in those last games. He is a great overall coach and can build a very good team with very good players, but in individual matchups he is a little lacking.

Man, I wouldn't compare these two coaches.....lol Really?

I don't know any other sports team removed from a coach almost 20 years that compares both good and bad. I wish we could just appreciate what Knight did for our University but leave it at that.

John Wooden UCLA. I guess they do to a degree but didn't much through the 90s.

Ha that's crazy since they have two titles since. But the trophy is named after the man.

The body slam part would be awesome. I bet TV Teddy would sell that like he is in the WWE.
