Mile just shared that Stevens got the first call and said no. Donovan was the second call and he is interested in talking.  This is the easiest decision in the history of IU basketball. Bye Tom,

I won't completely dismiss the thought that 2 or 3 elite openings would be at least tempting, but there's also something against it too.  Nobody wants to follow a legend and that would be the case at Duke for sure and to a lesser extent at UNC.  When a legendary coach, one who had coached there for years, retires it almost always results in a string of coaches (UCLA, UNC, IU, etc.). 

Also, with the likely departures it would create immediate openings for possible blue chip recruits.  And finally, worrying if your replacement coach might leave for greener pastures is a concern just settle for a lesser coach and accept your fate - most of us don't feel that way and hopefully neither does the powers that be.

You are awesome!! Thank you for the best message board possible. I hated insidethehall because no one in the know actually says good rumors even though it cost money. Peegs wasnt bad but got tired of a lot of posters. The 247 IU site I havent gave much of a chance cause I found this site when 247 started to become big. You deserve a lot of credit.

Appreciate that, but I only get credit for the idea of starting the place. We've always been a community built site. Can't even begin to think of how many people have worked for BtownBanners over the years. Many many resumes feature us which is pretty damn cool. Thanks for being a member!

I posted this in the Fire Tom Crean thread the other night. In case anyone didn't see it, here it is again:

Time to fan the flames…here is a PM conversation I had with someone two years ago:

Him: So i got a call from a friend of mine who has ties with iu basketball. I was not going to post it or even let anyone know until i just read your post from the UK fan. I heard the very same thing about 3 hours ago. Billy Donovan. I was told that IU is talking to Billy and their is mutual interest. I was also told that Crean is "moving money around." I am not sure what that means but i can only assume it has to do with the buyout. Crazy. I do like the idea of Donovan. Outside of Stephens he brings instant credability to the program. Anyway, take it for what its worth. I dont feel sure enough to post it but when I read your post i almost fell out of my chair. Thought i would let someone know.

Me: I can't remember where, but I heard about Donovan being interested a few weeks ago.

Here's hoping it happens. IU would be set for the first time this century.

Him: Would be an amazing hire.

This was the post I made that prompted this conversation: 

Got this off another site, posted by a UK fan:

"The following is from a friend of mine in the know. They are spot on when it comes to who will commit to UK way before its public. In other words, they are in the business. From them (not me): Crean gone this year and There is mutual interest between IU and Billy Donavan. Florida has apparently broken some promises to him regarding facility upgrades, etc. it's a football school and IU would be perfect for him."

And now, to throw cold water on those flames…the rest of the conversation, a few days later:

Me: I know it's only been a few days, but have you heard anything else? Any kind of timeline to this stuff?

Him: No. Sounds like it was 3rd party feelers for both sides but IU is not willing to pull the trigger.

 

I'm hoping "not willing to pull the trigger" was code for "not sure we want to give up on Crean just yet" and not "we don't want to go big."

That's true, but let's call a duck a duck. From what we have leaving (potentially) and what we have coming in, it's nothing to write home about. We would struggle for at least 2 years until he was able to get on the recruiting trails and play catch up with all of the big dogs. High school kids being recruited aren't waiting for a better coach at IU.

Wow this is the most negative post ever lol. If he takes the job and is being successful then he isn't going to leave for one of those schools. Now he may hold out in the nba but lets hope he wants to be king of Indiana and takes the job. Think how big crean could have been if he was successful. Look how big of jerk bob knight was and he is a legend with tons of supporters. If you come to indiana and win at an elite level then you wont want to leave because you are on top of college basketball world imo

Five star kids often times sign in the late period.Calipari loaded up first class.I would think Donovan could do similar things.If we retain the better kids we have we should be fine.

Donovan would load up kids in a hurry. Gotta remember Florida was a legit team when high school seniors were growing up.

Forget Florida! He's the guy who coached KD and Westbrook, and was 1 win away from making the NBA finials. That will carry for weight with recruits!

You can't forget Florida. He has 2 NCAA titles and 4 Final Fours there. More than all of Purdoo sports combined.
