Who Coaches?

Recommended Posts

I coach 10U basketball. My son is in that age group. Last summer I was taking my son to the school to shoot hoops on the weekends and I thought I should invite the whole third grade in so everyone could get better. I just wanted the kids to have fun and get better. It developed into the parents wanting more so we decided to play in some leagues and tournaments. I like to win but at this age I focus on fundamentals, man to man defense and good shooting mechanics. My proudest moment, a left handed kid, who never shoots with his right hand, was going in for a right layup during a game. I was ready to yell at him and bench him because I just knew he was going to use his left hand. He used his right and got fouled in a close game. After the game, he was almost as excited about that layup as I was. All but two of my third graders can easily use their opposite hand for lay ups now.

I've coached football anywhere from 3-4 grade to freshmen for 7 seasons. Basketball same age groups for 4 seasons. Football is my main sport. Parents always liked me because my sons were always lineman, so I could never be accused of "daddy ball". Lol.

Sadly, last year might have been my last. A group of parents made part of the season unbearable, and this was a 4-4 season.

I've coached my daughter softball team and this is my second season as assistant coach at my old high school.

Just one bit of advise to all you parents who take your kids to hitting coaches. Do you research on who is instructing your kids. We have some kids that go to hitting instructors and by their mechanics, it is clear, they are not getting what they pay for.

Wow, some coach here! I don't think I ever took a left handed layup in a game until about 6th grade. Sign him up for IU!

U-11 Basketball . My favorite player is my point guard (my kid), who wears IU shorts and socks even though we're in South Florida. Our team stunk last season, but one of the wins was preceded by showing the kids video of AJ Moye vs Boozer/Duke on my phone during warm-ups, and imploring them to get every loose ball. The little rats were probably watching Bracey Wright and Devin Dumes on their own before the other games ;)

Also U-12 soccer.

Coached High School hockey for 6 years. Won state 3 years and 1 runner up. "Retired" 2 years ago. Coach my oldest boy (9yo) in baseball and basketball.

Our basketball team is tremendous fun. Learning plays, pick and rolls, in bounds plays, help side defense, outlet passes. We are undefeated. My son is the shortest but finds a way to get his shot off. Seeing the improvement of all the kids in 3 months has been so rewarding!

Baseball is coming up soon. First year in minors.

I haven't had the chance really. Coached the 5th grade girls AAU team last year. Was a blast. I wouldn't be able to coach any sport basketball lol. But I'm a youngin so I have time to coach some more.

I have coached soccer (had no idea what I was doing when I started) but ended up coaching over 10 years. Coached about 10 years of basketball too. This summer I helped start a running club for elementary kids.

Some of the kids you get a chance to meet make it all worth it. Beyond spending time with your kids you also get to meet some great kids.

One of my favorites was doing some basketball drills and I wanted them to work with their off hand. This kid has some birth defects that left his arms and hands undeveloped. He came to me after trying his off hand and asked if he could just stay with his right hand. He had tried for about 5 minutes with the left but when he came and showed me the arm and told me he did not have many bones in his hand I was blown away. That kid never complained and even played some goalie for me in soccer and was good.

If you are thinking about getting involved I would encourage you to jump in somewhere.

Coaching is so rewarding.  The best thing is working with a kid, and they put that into the game.  I had one kid who was struggling hitting, and I told him to just swing as hard as he could.  This player wouldn't be aggressive in his swings, so I told him I didn't care if he struck out, he was going to swing very hard.  His next up at bat, he smacks an inside the park home run.

The last two years we've only played in one league, but this year some of the kids asked to play in another league that's more competitive.  I can't complain with that, so we are doing two leagues.  Very excited.
