Indiana v. Illinois Post-Game thread

There are only a few teams that I love to see the Hoosiers put the beat down on more than Illinois.

Northwestern will play better defense against us, but to repeat my broken record reiteration, when Troy and RoJo contribute instead of turning the ball over, we're pretty darn good. Not one of Bryant's best games, but Bielfeld made up for that. OG really does have a knack for being in the right place at the right time, and Morgan might be our best defender.

 

We've shown we can win on the road, and if we keep playing at this level at home, we're going to be in the B1G race to the wire...especially given the "any given night" things that have happened (Purdue losing big at Illinois (Illini only W in B1G to date), Maryland needing OT at home to beat NW, Penn State winning on the road at NW, Wisky beating MSU, etc etc).

Pretty cool that our record 3 was scored by a walk on assisted by a walk on.

Looking back at this game and the new record for 3s, there are a few thins that stand out.

 

-  17 of 19 were assisted on, 2 of Yogi's were off the dribble

-  5 players hit multiple 3s in a row (Troy, RoJo, Yogi, Max, Z3)

Meant to post this the other night…I found TeamworkOrange. He posts on Illinois Loyalty now. It appears the Illinois scout board had a similar exodus to ours and they have multiple other boards they post on now. Here's what he had to say about the game:

 

Anybody who knows me on the boards, knows I abhor all things IU. I didn't expect us to win tonight, but this... this, is not good. Not good at all. I'm extremely calm, and I was calm watching the game. This is unlike me as I typically yell at the tv during games. I guess I have resigned myself to the fact that we're not a very good basketball program anymore. I'm still a fan and will root for the team, but I'm no longer emotionally invested. I haven't felt this down about our program since the Deon Thomas sanctions. It's hard to believe...

Not sure I would say Max was awesome. He was solid. I am always afraid his 3s will break the rim. They have the trajectory of a bullet.

Lol. I remember this guy being totally off the wall with his views. Having this guy suffer through the Illini sucking is great. Karma is biting him in the arse.

1. Indiana seems to have found its way. What happened?

Andy Katz: The schedule has helped. But this team has also bought into the concept of team defense. The ball is moving better offensively, according to Tom Crean. And it's clearly the diversity of scoring and sharing of the ball that's working well for the Hoosiers.

Eamonn Brennan: Through five games, Indiana has allowed the fewest points per possession of any team in the Big Ten. No, seriously! As Andy mentioned, this bizarre turn of events is absolutely a product of schedule (those five games: Rutgers, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Minnesota) and plain old collective improvement. There's also a third factor, though there's no joy in bringing it up: James Blackmon Jr.'s season-ending knee injury. That injury, one game before the B1G opener, robbed Crean of a well-liked player and a potent offensive weapon, but it also removed IU's most glaring defensive liability from the rotation. The trade-off -- marginally worse offense, significantly better defense -- is working thus far.

Myron Medcalf: No need to repeat the obvious answer. Indiana has fortified its defense against the league's basement. The Hoosiers are also connecting on nearly 44 percent of their 3-pointers. If you believe Ken Pomeroy, there's not much any opponent can do about that. Don't forget about the steady contributions from freshman Thomas Bryant. He's leading the nation with a 75 percent clip inside the arc. He helps, and he'll be a major factor in Indiana's ability to maintain this rhythm.
