Wilson and Glass Talking Extension Soon?

Recommended Posts

Seems premature to me. Another bowl game next year would warrant discussion of an extension. So far Wilson is Lynch 2.0: Lynch overall 19-30 .388, B10 6-26 .188, one bowl game appearance Wilson overall 20-40 .333, B10 8-32 .200, one bowl game appearance (and hopefully win)

How is he supposed to recruit if his contract doesn't even last until the recruits are IU-bound? IU football just made a bowl game. Let's keep this guy forever.

I'm impatient I guess and have a low tolerance for sustained sub par performance (Thanks Coach Crean!). Other high profile programs have no problem hiring and firing coaches on the eve of bowl games, or even mid season, every year and seem to do just fine recruiting. I suppose I want us in the 100M olympic dash when we are still in JV level track as a program success wise, but we certainly shouldnt be chomping at the bit to extend at this very minute.

We aren't a high profile program in football.

Wilson is recruiting a lot better, and we are a decent QB away from another bowl game. I question some of the play calls, but Wilson is doing a lot better than Lynch. Lynch got the jump start from what Coach Hep was building, and could never come close. Wilson is doing this with Lynch's mess.

I really don't get the logic that Wilson is doing alot better than Lynch, he is recruiting better but hes getting about the same wins.  The same results with better players, make a coach better?

That being said you have to give Wilson the extension.  If we make a bowl game next year you give him another moderate extension.

What I was trying to point out is Lynch took over a program that was on the upswing because of Coach Hep. Lynch could never do anything with that. Wilson took over a football program that was not in near as good of shape than what Lynch had. IU is tough to recruit for football, and Wilson is getting it done. If Suds and Howard don't go down, we beat OSU and have a better chance at PSU. Now, Rutgers was awful, but we still made a bowl with significant injuries and bad secondary. Wilson and Knorr are doing a good job at getting that fixed.

We never came close to beating good OSU, Mich and pen state teams under lynch. I agree we would've won those games with a healthy suds and Howard.

As mentioned, Lynch inherited a better team when he started and got to a bowl game with Hep's recruits.  The team dropped like a rock the next year.

Lynch introduced IU fans to losing to MAC schools, never scoring in the 2nd half and getting humiliated by Wisconsin and other big programs.

We may not have the record but Wilson has us scoring in the second half of games and playing good teams closely.  We've been giving lots of really good teams all they can handle.  Wins will come under Wilson.

I mean, it's just two years with a minimal buyout. It's pretty much the definition of "least they could do". Especially if we get any extra monies from this whole endeavor.

I don't understand how bowl games payout at all, so I can't say if that contributes. I mean, I get there are payouts, and we have an agreement with the Big Ten our payouts go to them and they divide among member schools. But, I don't understand why it benefits us to make a bowl financially other than increased alumni donations. If someone else in the Big Ten was taking our place in the Pinstripe wouldn't we get the same payouts? Isn't it more important the total number of conference members going to bowls (and big bowls at that) since it's divided with members? All members get it not just bowling members right? The Big Ten has agreements to send teams to like 9 bowl games; what happens when we don't have enough bowl eligible teams? How do payouts work then?

I tried to do some research but it's mostly garbage and I don't have time to read the actual agreements if they're even public if I can even find them so, hopefully someone here better understands. Though, I predict everyone else has the same problem I do, I never looked into this before because it was never relevant to Indiana.

Near as I can tell, the CFP are what matter most, and putting two teams in would have been a massive paycheck. Plus winning. Winning seems to increase your payout. But maybe for only some games.

He's going to be extended. You can't recruit with only 2 years left. You either have to move on or extend, and it would be asinine to fire him. Illinois is (rightfully) being ripped because they took the interim tag off their coach and gave him 2 years. They're basically in purgatory now. If Wilson has 4-5 years on his contract, we can continue our recruiting momentum.

Also we are not a "high profile" program.
