Depth Chart: Starters and Subs for the nth time

Recommended Posts

Based on a very small sample of last night.

Starters
1. Yogi
2. Rob
3. JB
4. Troy
5. TB

Bench in order
6. Hartman
7. Z man
8. Max
9. OG
10. Morgan
11. The man, the myth, the legend!

Question to me is, can Juwan or OG jump Max or Hartman for big man minutes by mid or late season???

This is how I see things as of now. I gave OG a bump due to size mostly but Juwan has more polish. Those 2 could be flipped. Plus CTC likes experience so Hartman shoots up depth chart but limited athleticism still lowers his ceiling. Similar for Max. Big body but not tall. Will have problems rebounding vs the B1Gs best.

Just gonna be a huge drop off in the middle when TB isn't in the game. I expect the smart coaches to attack him early and try to get him in foul trouble. I expect Crean will have TB lay off a little to keep him out of foul trouble. Which will affect the quality of our D.

I really hate having to play Troy at the 4. Hopefully somebody develops and by the big ten season we can get away from that

I don't know that lack of a replacement 4 is driving that. We're going to play with three guards no matter what. And Crean never plays positions anyway. Troy will get time handling the ball, playing in the post, and out in the wing.

Yeah this instantly reminded me of Vonleh vs. UConn a couple years ago. I think he picked up 2 fouls in the first minute. We would've probably beat them if he played normal minutes.

I don't mind Troy at the 4, I think it creates a lot of mismatches for us. The problem is when you're going to go small at the 4, which Troy is in terms of bulk, then you need a tall/long wing as well. The problem isn't Troy, it's that JBJ and RoJo are both guards, not really wings.

If we had a junior version of someone with OG's size on the wing, then a lineup of Yogi, JBJ/RoJo, junior OG, Troy, Bryant would be a great lineup. Heck, you can insert Hartman in there so you at least have a 6'7" guy on the wing, I'm just not sure Hartman is athletic enough. But, if we started a true wing at the "3" instead of a combo guard, then Troy at the 4 would be fine.

I agree with all of WayneFleek's picks except I agree with Hova that Burton takes the 11 spot right now over Bird---I mean MSB---I mean Priller!

Burton may actually be a little better inside defensively than Morgan early in the season ---until Morgan gets a little stronger and gets the defensive concepts down.  But--Juwan is better than Burton offensively----so it may depend on matchups and what we need at the time.

If RJ or JBJ come out flat in a game---get Hartman in there to make something happen!

Yogi
Jbj
Rojo
Troy
Thomas
Zeis
Colin
Juwan
Og
Max
Burton, niego, msb. This is just my prediction based off people who watched the practice before Hoosier hysteria earlier that day. All I heard from the people how Juwan was a steal and gonna be a very solid player. Hope they are right

Predicting the lineup this year is pretty easy.  Same lineup as last year, except replace HMP with Bryant.

Bench:

Colin

Z3

Max

The opportunity is there for OG and Juwan to earn minutes, but we'll see.  I hope they step up to the challenge, but if they take a year to develop and prepare to contribute then I wouldn't be brokenhearted with an 8 man rotation even though I'd like one more big to be there.

Priller - bless his heart

Burton will get a few minutes here and there.  He won't play a lot, he won't wow anyone, but I also don't expect him to do anything stupid if he has to give a couple of minutes.

I'm curious what people think about Z3 this year. Will we need his limited skill set as much? Or is the cost of having him play defense higher than the benefit of his laser 3-pointers? Of course, that all depends on if OG or Juwan could step in and match his points scored minus points allowed. It will be an interesting first few games as the line-up gets played with and finalized.

Though, pretty much only for those three. I think Colin is going to be a stud 6th man and Max has his position locked down.

Oh my gosh guys. 1 week and 3.8 hours.

This is just my opinion, but I don't really care about Ziesloft's defensive production. If he continues to be the #1 player in offensive efficiency in the country, he should see the court quite a bit. One would think he's worked on his defense a little bit this year and could show a little more on the defensive end. Also, the added element of a shot blocker (Bryant, even without yet playing a collegiate minute, is better than HMP would have ever been at defense) should help the defense in all situations.

Z3 is an obvious liability on D and is the only guy with a legit excuse as he is not as gifted physically. Hoping Z3 can be used as instant offense in limited minutes because the real talent(rj, jbj) has improved greatly on both ends.

2nd apparently at the end of the year. John Simmons of Central Michigan ended up taking the crown.

That's about what I figured. I agree with hopes that he worked on his defense since it really couldn't get any worse, he was possibly the worst defender on a team of bad defenders. My thoughts going in are pretty much that when he was good, he was a star, I mean, at Wisconsin last year? Are you kidding me? But when he isn't getting shots or making shots, he could easily give up a series of scores for the other side with terrible defense. Those add up in close games and it seems like finding the balance between getting him enough minutes to be an offensive force while limiting his minutes on defense are going to be a trick this year. Especially with two freshman eager to prove themselves at his back.

If we have enough outside shooting from other players, is there a point where we are better off relying on other players to make up his offense and ability to spread the floor with the benefit of every defensive possession not essentially being 4 v 5?

Alford, you make a good point about how if the other players have made good defensive steps, then his defense is less important and he can just jack 3s. I hadn't considered that aspect.

But man, if Z3 added a nice midrange Z2 to his repertoire this off-season he's going to be an offensive powerhouse. A player who can just jack it wherever he is on the floor as soon as he is open is pretty valuable.

I don't really think that is a solution. Anytime Hartman had to guard someone on the wing last year, he either got beat off the dribble or overhelped inside and gave his man a wide open shot. I appreciate Hartman's hustle and the occasional three but outside of that...

Are you guys sure that Collin isn't starting?

With a 3 guard starting lineup and only one playable guard on the bench, that would mean that each of our four guards would average 30 minutes a game. That seems a little high to me.

I suppose that when the bench comes in we could shift to a two guard lineup, but still...
